RPF jawan among 3 dead in Maoist attack on train

Patna, Jun 13: A group of around 200 Naxals attacked the Dhanbad-Patna intercity express near Jamui district in Bihar, killing one Reserved Special Force (RPF) jawan, a police personnel and another passenger apart from injuring six passengers, including the train guard. At least 500 passengers are believed to be on board.naxal

The deceased have been identified as constable Sukhnath Deonath of the fifth RSPF battalion; Kumar Amit, a Bihar police personnel who was among the passengers on the train and another passenger Sharwar Alam.

The identities of the injured is yet to be ascertained.

“The train was escorted by RPF personnel, two in the front and three at the rear end. At least 150 to 200 Naxals intercepted the train at the Bhalui halt near Jamui and began firing. The RFP retaliated. The Naxals snatched two of their rifles. The trains was moved from to the Kiul junction where forces from Jamalpur and Patna were rushed,” KS Anupam, deputy inspector general (DIG), Railways said.

The Bhalui halt falls in an area the Naxal-dominated Jamui and Lakhisarai districts. “It is a no-man’s land marked by jungle and hills,” Deepak Barnwal, superintendent of police, Jamui said.

The firing started around 1.30 p.m. and lasted for nearly 40 minutes. Three jawans from the Reserve Protection Police Force (RPSF) had rifles made the passengers lie down to escape the firing, Sanjay Singh, chief security officer of the East Central Railway said.

The Railway escort party lost three rifles, including one AK 47 and two INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifles, Mr. Singh said.

“The jawans were firing in retaliation,” SK Bhardwaj, Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order said. It seems their motives is to spread terror and snatch the arms from the jawans.

The relief operations started immediately as the trains reached Kiul. Medical vans were rushed to Kiul to provide aid to injured passengers. The Central Reserve Police Force was also rushed for rescue.

The train will be leaving from Kiul for Patna.

Bhopal, Jul 26: BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur on Saturday appealed people to recite the Hanuman Chalisa five times a day till August 5, which she believes will rid the world of the coronavirus pandemic.
`Bhoomi pujan’ or the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya is to take place on August 5.
“Let us all of us together make a spiritual effort to wish people good health and end the coronavirus epidemic.
Recite ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ five times a day at your home from July 25 to August 5,” the Bhopal MP tweeted.
“Conclude this ritual by lighting lamps on August 5 and offering ‘aarti’ to Lord Ram at home,” she added.
She also shared a video on Twitter, in which she said the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh is making efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus by imposing lockdown in Bhopal till August 4.
“Though the lockdown will be over on August 4, this ritual (recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, a hymn in praise of Lord Hanuman) will end on August 5, when ‘bhoomi pujan’ for Ram temple in Ayodhya will be performed. We will celebrate that day like Diwali,” she added.
“When people... Hindus from across the country recite the ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in one voice, it will definitely work and we will be free from coronavirus...This is your prayer to Lord Ram,” said Thakur.

Mumbai, Mar 5: Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal and few others have been booked by the ED in a money laundering case even as the agency is conducting searches at his premises, officials said on Thursday.

They said a criminal case against the former chairman of the airlines has been filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after taking cognisance of a recent Mumbai Police FIR filed against him.

The Enforcement Directorate carried out raids at Goyal's premises in Mumbai on Wednesday and also questioned him after filing the case, they said.

The action is continuing, they added.

The Mumbai Police FIR pertains to charges of alleged fraud by Goyal and others against a Mumbai-based travel company.

Goyal has earlier been grilled by the central probe agency in a case filed under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) in September last year.

The agency had carried out similar raids, under the FEMA, in August last year against Goyal, his family and others.

ED has alleged in the past that the businessman's empire had 19 privately-held companies, five of which were registered abroad.

The agency is probing charges that these firms allegedly carried out “doubtful” transactions under the guise of selling, distribution and operating expenses.

The ED suspects that expenses at these companies were allegedly booked at fake and high costs and as a result, they “projected” huge losses.

Alleged shady aircraft lease transactions with non-existent offshore entities are also under the ED scanner and it is suspected that Jet Airways made payments for lease rental to “ghost firms”, which purportedly routed the ill-gotten money in Goyal's companies.

A full-service carrier, Jet Airways shut its operations in April last year after running out of cash.

A month earlier, Goyal had stepped down as the chairman of Jet Airways.

London, May 14: Vijay Mallya on Thursday lost his application seeking leave to appeal in the UK Supreme Court, in a setback for the embattled liquor tycoon who last month lost his High Court appeal against an extradition order to India on charges of fraud and money laundering related to unrecovered loans to his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

The 64-year-old businessman had 14 days to file this application to seek permission to move the higher court on the High Court judgment from April 20, which dismissed his appeal against a Westminster Magistrates' Court's extradition order certified by the UK Home Secretary.

The latest ruling will now go back for re-certification and the process of extradition should be triggered within 28 days.

The UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Mallya's appeal to certify a point of law was rejected on all three counts, of hearing oral submissions, grant a certificate on the questions as drafted, and grant permission to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The Indian government's response to the appeal application had been submitted earlier this week.

The leave to appeal to the Supreme Court is on a point of law of general public importance, which according to experts is a very high threshold that is not often met.
