BJP must declare Modi is not its PM candidate: Nitish

June 15, 2013

NitishPatna, Jun 15: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has set his terms for staying in the NDA. He has asked the BJP to publicly declare that Narendra Modi will not be its prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 elections. Since BJP can't give such an undertaking, a parting of ways between it and JD(U) is now expected in a day or two.

Speaking to media, Nitish Kumar said: "They (the BJP) will have to address our basic concern immediately and in public. Private assurances will not do." While he didn't mention the Gujarat CM by name, there is no ambiguity whatsoever about what he meant by "basic concern".

JD(U) has publicly proclaimed that only a "secular" person, who does not have rough edges in his personality and can pull everyone along, is fit to be the country's prime minister. It has also held that Modi does not fulfil the eligibility criteria.

As BJP is likely to find it impossible to meet the condition, considering the groundswell for Modi among the party cadre, the 17-year-old partnership between it and JD(U) is on the rocks. This is an unavoidable reality and split in the NDA is now inevitable by Monday.

Both Nitish Kumar and his colleague, JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, recognize the inevitability of Gujarat leader being anointed BJP's choice for country's top political job, and has conveyed their assessment to BJP leaders, — among them, L K Advani, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Nitin Gadkari — who have appealed to the JD(U) to not precipitate matters.

They also don't subscribe to the optimism of Modi's opponents that his projection as PM candidate was not a done deal yet. "The way it has been hailed and celebrated by the BJP leaves no doubt whatsoever that his appointment as the chairman of the campaign committee is a key step towards Modi's projection as the party's PM candidate," said a JD(U) source.

According to political sources here, Nitish Kumar has responded to Advani's plea for a reconsideration of the JD(U)'s imminent departure from NDA by saying that he doubted anybody in the BJP could now thwart Modi's march to the top of his party.

"They (BJP leaders calling JD(U) leaders) all come off as helpless to stop what is unfolding, leaving us with no option but to chart out our independent path," said a senior JD U source familiar with the conversations that BJP leaders have had with Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav.

Sushma Swaraj's effort on Friday when she, according to JD(U) sources, invoked anti-Congressism to get Nitish Kumar to back off from his plan to withdraw from the NDA, failed to concinve the CM.

JD(U) will start rolling out the withdrawal drill after Sharad Yadav reaches here to explain to party legislators and functionaries why the JD(U) is compelled to break away. The exercise will be a formality, considering that all the important leaders favour a withdrawal from the NDA. In any case, Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav, who were authorised by the party in April to take the final call, are clear that their vparty won't have any truck with a Modi-led BJP.

Kozhikode, Aug 8: Minister of State (Mos) for External Affairs V Muraleedharan on Saturday reached Kozhikode where Air India Express flight (IX-1344) crash-landed yesterday.

He is likely to meet those injured in the crash and their family members.

At least 17 people including two pilots have lost their lives in the incident. However, the four-cabin crew members are safe, said the Air India Express in a statement.

The injured are admitted to hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode, as per the state government officials.

Informing about his visit to Kozhikode, Muraleedharan tweeted: "Taking off to #Calicut by @airindiain
special flight. Hope to visit the crash site at the Calicut Airport and also meet those injured in the crash and their family members."

Muraleedharan on Friday expressed grief after an Air India Express plane carrying 190 passengers including 10 infants skidded while landing at Karipur Airport in Kozhikode.

"Deeply anguished to hear about the mishap in Calicut airport involving the flight from Dubai to Calicut. Was informed that the plane overshot the runway and seemingly nosedived," the Minister tweeted.

New Delhi, Mar 12: TMC MP Saugata Roy said Home Minister Amit Shah should resign for "failing" to control the riots in Delhi and demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge.

Participating in a discussion on the violence in Delhi in Lok Sabha, Roy said the Delhi riots happened 72 years after Mahatma Gandhi was killed by a Hindu fanatic.

"Gandhiji has been murdered again in Delhi by, you know who," Roy said while addressing the Chair.

Taking on BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi for defending BJP leaders for their controversial remarks, which he claimed instigated the violence, Roy said he has seldom heard such a communal speech ever.

Dubbing the BJP MP as "Devil's Advocate", Roy said, "She spent five minutes defending the most hated man. May I quote (William) Shakespeare and call her the Devil's Advocate?...She is the best Devil's Advocate possible. She has also been an advocate for the Delhi Police which has shown total inaction and ineptness in this whole riot in Delhi."

Thereafter Roy trained his gun at Shah, who was present in the house while the TMC MP was speaking.

He said that when the riots started on February 24, Home Minister Shah was sitting in the front row at Motera Stadium (in Gujarat) welcoming US President Donald Trump.

"When Mr. Shah should have been in Delhi Police control room, he was welcoming Mr. Trump at Motera. There was no order to the police. Then on 25th, things went out of control. Armed mobs fought with each other on the streets of Delhi," Roy said.

Demanding resignation of Shah, Roy raised questions on NSA Ajit Doval's visit to the riots-affected areas on February 26 and asked what was the Home Minister doing.

"Is it NSA's business to control ordinary law and order situation? Why was the Home Minister absent in action? There is no explanation for the same," he said.

The TMC leader said he feels bad standing face-to-face with Shah.

"He is still young, he has a good future. He should acknowledge responsibility for his failure to control or stop Delhi riots and bring peace in three days. In the name of God, go and do not stay in the Home Minister's position," Roy said, adding he is the man who could not prevent riots in Delhi, at a place 10 kilometres away from the Home Ministry.

Roy demanded a judicial inquiry into the riots by a sitting Supreme Court judge and complete rehabilitation for all the riot victims.
