Guwahati, Aug 4: The turmoil over statehood demands continued in Assam on Saturday amid stray incidents of violence. While government office and public properties were torched in Karbi Anglong district, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) is preparing for a massive showdown in Kokrajhar on Sunday to press for the creation of a separate Bodoland State.

Tension gripped the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) areas as vehicles were torched and tyres burnt on roads during a 36-hour State bandh called by the Aboro (non-Bodo) Surksha Samiti, who are opposed to the bifurcation of Assam for the sake of Bodoland.

Bodoland Territorial Council chief executive member and BPF president Hagrama Mohilary, however, said his party would mobilise people living in the proposed Bodoland areas in Sunday’s Statehood demand rally in Kokrajhar.

In Karbi Anglong’s Diphu town, curfew was relaxed for three hours from 8 a.m. to 11 am on Saturday. Assam Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Prithibi Majhi and Water Resources Minister Rajib Lochan Pegu visited the hill town to take stock of the situation.

Karbi Anglong SP Mugdhajyoti Mahanta told The Hindu that there had been two incidents of miscreants setting fire to a bamboo craft training institute and an unmanned firm on Saturday. No incident was reported from Diphu town. In Dongkamokam area under Hamren Sub-division, curfew was clamped on Friday following arson upon government institutions and public properties. Hamren SP Nityananda Goswami, however, said the situation was under control. In Dongkamokam, an office of the Hill State Democratic Party (HSDP), which has been demanding creation of a separate State comprising the two hill districts, was torched.

Kamatapur stir

In the city, hundreds under the banner of the All Koch Rajbangshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) staged a demonstration in front of Raj Bhawan here, demanding the creation of a separate Kamatapur State comprising 15 districts of Assam and six districts of West Bengal, including Darjeeling. AKRSU president Biswajit Ray urged the Bodo organisations to extend support to the movement for Kamatapur claiming that the proposed State had been acknowledged historically among the Koch-Rajbangshis.

The Statehood movement in twin hill districts Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao is now poised to be intensified with 13 organisations forming a Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) to press for the creation of an autonomous State comprising the two hill districts under Article 244 (a) of the Constitution. On the other hand, leaders of the erstwhile militant outfit United People’s Democratic Solidarity tore up the peace accord by which it had agreed to give up arms and settle for enhanced autonomy for Karbi Anglong in lieu of Statehood.

The supporters of Statehood are divided into two groups — one led by the Congress and associated organisations demanding an autonomous State within Assam under Article 244(a) and the other led by the HSDP and associated organisations demanding the creation of a separate State by carving out the two hill districts from Assam.

Trains cancelled

The railway blockade organised by the All Bodo Students’ Union on Friday led to snapping of the rail link between the northeast and rest of India. A railway track was sabotaged in Karbi Anglong. As a result, the Northeast Frontier Railway authorities on Saturday cancelled 15 short-distance passenger trains and two long-distance trains amid difficulties. Thousands of passengers were stranded in Guwahati and other railway stations. The State arranged buses to transship the stranded to the Inter State Bus Terminus.

New Delhi, Mar 23: The central government has asked state governments to take strict action against violators of the coronavirus lockdown being enforced in 80 districts across the country.

An official statement released on Monday said there will be a total lockdown in 80 districts where coronavirus cases have been reported. The shutdown will end on March 31.

Delhi's borders will remain sealed during the lockdown, but essential services related to health, food, water and power supply will continue, and 25 per cent of the DTC buses will run to transport people associated with essential services.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier on Monday appealed to state governments to ensure that rules and regulations of the coronavirus lockdown are enforced as he noted that many people were not taking the measure seriously.

"Many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously. Please save yourself, save your family, follow the instructions seriously. I request state governments to ensure rules and laws are followed," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Dehradun, Jun 13: Chief of Army Staff General M M Naravane on Saturday said the country is passing through difficult times and its safety and honour depend on the ability of its young officers as military leaders.

Addressing gentlemen cadets at the Indian Military Academy here as the reviewing officer of a passing out parade, Gen Naravane said they are being commissioned as officers into the army under the most daunting of circumstances and the high standards of their military training will help them overcome the challenges lying in store for them.

The parade saw a total of 423 cadets being commissioned into the army including 333 from the country and 90 from friendly foreign countries.

"These are difficult times for the country. Its safety, honour and respect depend on your abilities as military leaders. You have to live up to the expectations of your countrymen. You have to ensure that whatever you do is for their welfare," he said.

The army chief said there are no good or bad regiments but only good officers.

"Become one with your men. Win their trust and affection and they will win battles for you," Naravane said.

He asked the gentlemen cadets to throw themselves into their new role as commissioned officers with passion but also be compassionate towards their men.

"When the going gets tough and all seems lost, it is the spirit of your men that helps you win," he said.

He said the gentlemen cadets who are taking their first step as commissioned officers will have to make decisions in the tactical and operational domain as well as resolve ethical issues and they will have only their conscience to guide them.

"In such critical moments let the core values enshrined in the preamble of the constitution of India be your guiding light," the Army Chief said.

Asking them to rise above petty considerations of caste, creed and religion, he said the army does not discriminate.

Apart from containing the external threats, you may also have to defang internal forces out to destabilise the country.

He said the precise drill movements of the cadets had convinced him they will do their respective countries proud.

"In the autumn of your careers what will matter is not the position you finally attain but how honourably you have served your nation," he said.

In a message to the gentlemen cadets' parents, who were not allowed to attend the event due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Army Chief said, "Till yesterday they (gentlemen cadets) were your children but from tomorrow they will be ours."

He promised to be with them through thick and thin.

The parade looked slightly off-colour this time with the enthusiastic crowds of parents and some usual features missing like the showering of the drill square with flower petals by helicopters.

Hyderabad, Feb 28: The Cyber Crime Police of Hyderabad has registered an FIR against social media platforms- WhatsApp, Twitter and TikTok- for allowing people to spread anti-national activities, as per a complaint filed by one S Srishailam.

Raghuveer, Additional DCP Cyber Crimes said," We have received a court referred complaint, which was filed by S Srisailam in the concerned court stating that social media platforms Whatsapp, Twitter and TikTok are allowing few people to spread anti-national activities and videos."

S Srisailam also claimed that a few people are running a campaign against the CAA on social media platforms to spread hatred which in turn is causing damage to national integrity.

"In this regard, because the complaint was referred by a court a case has been registered against Whatsapp, Twitter & TikTok under the relevant section of Indian Penal Code and IT Act and took up the investigation," the DCP added.

He also added that the police cannot take action against these platforms as they are not banned in India but can initiate action against persons who intentionally indulge in spreading hatred.

"The police are conducting the investigation and if allegations of the complainant are found to be false then we will drop the case. We had received the case one week ago," informed the DCP.
