Pakistan moves to defuse tension after killing of soldiers

August 9, 2013
New Delhi, Aug 9: Pakistan scurried to  de-escalate tension after New Delhi shed its wishy-washy stance and warned Islamabad that the recent killing of five Indian soldiers on the Line of Control (LoC) will have consequences on bilateral relations.

navazPakistan premier M Nawaz Sharif expressed “his sadness over the recent incidents on the LoC and the loss of precious lives.” He did not admit the involvement of Pakistani troops in Tuesday’s killings. Sharif said it was “imperative for both India and Pakistan to take effective steps to ensure and restore ceasefire on the LoC.”

Sharif’s statement came hours after Defence Minister A K Antony told Parliament that the killing of the Indian soldiers by Pakistani Army regulars and terrorists will have “consequences” on the Indian Army’s “behaviour” on the LoC, as well as New Delhi’s relations with Islamabad.

As clamour grew for suspension of talks with Pakistan, Sharif sought to salvage his proposed meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month.

A release issued by the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi quoted him saying that he was “looking forward to his meeting” with Singh. “During the meeting,” he was quoted as saying, “we will discuss steps to further build trust and consolidate this relationship.”

The release was issued after Sharif’s meeting with his advisor on national security and foreign affairs, Sartaj Aziz, and other senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Pakistan government in Islamabad on Thursday.

Antony, who had earlier refrained from directly blaming the Pakistan Army for the incident, made a course-correction on Thursday and said “specialist troops” of the neighbouring country were involved in the “brutal and unprovoked attack” on the Indian Army patrol.

He was criticised by the Opposition after he told Parliament on Tuesday that “persons dressed in Pakistan Army uniforms” accompanied the terrorists during the attack. The Opposition had created ruckus in both Houses, alleging that the defence minister’s statement corroborated Pakistan’s denial.

“We all know that nothing happens from the Pakistan side of the LoC without support, assistance, facilitation and often, direct involvement of the Pakistan Army,” Antony told Parliament on Thursday.

Antony said Pakistan should not only punish people responsible for the attack, but also show “determined action to dismantle terrorist networks, organisations and infrastructure and show tangible movement on bringing those responsible for the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 to justice quickly.

” New Delhi’s tough talk and growing uncertainty over the resumption of bilateral dialogue has prodded Islamabad into action and Sharif was briefed by foreign office officials.

The release issued by the Pakistan government quoted Sharif saying that leadership from both sides should not allow the situation to drift.

Steps should be taken to improve the atmosphere by engaging constructively to build trust and confidence.

He also said while the existing military-to-military channels could be optimally utilised to prevent misunderstanding, Pakistan was prepared to discuss steps to further strengthen existing mechanisms at both political and military levels.

New Delhi,  Apr 2: Muslim cleric Imam Umer Ilyasi appealed to all the individuals who attended Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi recently, not to hide from the government and not to be scared of it.

"I appeal to all the Muslim brothers and mosque managing committees involved in the Jamaat congregation to please come out and inform the government. You do not need to feel scared of the government," Ilyasi told news agency.

He added: "You do not need to feel scared of the government. If you are quarantined, it doesn't mean you will be punished. This is for your and other people's safety."
On the subject of people likely to be quarantined, he said that if one does get quarantined, he or she must not think those quarantine facilities are jails. "If you are quarantined, it doesn't mean you will be punished. This is for your and other people's safety. Quarantine is the cure, you do not need to worry about it," he added.

Ilyasi further appealed to the people that one must not associate religion with the coronavirus outbreak. "Islam talks about saving one person's life and securing a person's life. Do not connect the outbreak with religion as this outbreak does not affect any religion or caste in particular," he said.

With regards to the lockdown being imposed by the centre, he said: "I appeal to all that we must obey the lockdown judiciously as there is no medicine or cure for this disease."
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's latest bulletin said that there are 1,834 coronavirus positive cases in India, including 1,649 active cases, 144 cured/discharged/migrated people and 41 deaths.

New Delhi, Mar 26: Despite repeated assurances by the Centre and state government of no shortage of food and essential services in Delhi, many daily wage earners have started fleeing the national capital on foot to return to their native villages in nearby Uttar Pradesh and other states because of the hardships being faced by them.
Most daily wage earners who are fleeing have complained that they are doing so because they will die of hunger due to lack of resources at their disposal.
"I am going to Azamgarh, my native place which is more than 800 kilometers from here. We have started walking towards our village. On the roads, if we get some vehicles then it will be all right otherwise we will continue on foot. I used to work in the construction sector but all work has stopped, we therefore have no other means to buy our rations. Atleast, food is guaranteed in our homes," Ghanshyam, a daily wage earner, told ANI here.
Rani, another daily wage earner, who was fleeing Delhi along with her family said, "Who would want to leave on foot, but what other options do we have. Our children will die of hunger, even if they are saved from the disease. That is why we are leaving."
While the government has been assuring that it will provide food and other essentials to the low-income groups, the people complained that they are yet to receive any help.
The departing of people has started despite repeated warnings by governments to prevent the influx of persons living in other states to curtail the spread of coronavirus.
Prince, who used to reside in Mongolpuri area of Delhi, said, "If we continue to stay the landlord will pester us for rent. The prices of all commodities are rising with each passing day, this way we will have nothing left to survive. We did not get any help from the government. I am, therefore, returning to Kasganj, which is close to 300 kilometres from Delhi. We will at least get food served twice a day in the village, nobody is offering us even water here."
Earlier on Tuesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced Rs 5,000 for each construction worker under Construction Workers Welfare Board Fund.
Addressing a video conference here, he said, "The Delhi government will give Rs 5,000 to each construction worker as their livelihood has been affected due the outbreak of coronavirus."
He also said that the number of night shelters in the city has been increased and more food is being distributed to homeless people.
He also said that due to curfew, several people were not able to get food, and urged the public to send such people to the nearest shelters of the Delhi government, where food was being arranged.
