Jammu, Aug 12: Pakistani troops started heavy firing on forward Indian locations in Edgar area of Poonch late Sunday night. Confirming this, Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Col R K Kalia said they were firing from small and automatic weapons. It is still going on, he said.

The Indian Army also retaliatiated. The exchange of fire was so fierce that people in Poonch town had climbed on their rooftops surprised by the light caused by flares.

This has been the fifth violation of the 2003 ceasefire agreement from Pakistan's side in the last 48 hours.

In another incident, Pakistan troops targeted Indian posts in Mendhar with machine guns and 82 mm mortar, sources said. Indian troops retaliated and the firing, which began at 10.00 am, continued till 2.50 pm. There were no casualties or damage reported in this incident.

Tension has been mounting on both the LoC and the IB since five soldiers were killed on the LoC at Chakkan Da Bagh by Pakistani troops and militants in Pooch on August 6. Heavy firing was also reported from the same area on Friday night, which lasted for several hours, sources said.

In view of the continued violation of the ceasefire agreement between the two countries, sources said troops have been instructed to restrict their movement in open areas near the border.

New Delhi, Feb 4: The investigation into the incident of violence at Jamia Millia Islamia during an anti-citizenship law protest was at a crucial stage, the Centre told the Delhi High Court on Tuesday.

The submission before a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar was made by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta while seeking more time to file a report regarding the probe.

Taking note of the submission, the bench granted the Centre time till April 29 to file a reply.

During the hearing, senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for some students of Jamia, said 93 students and teachers filed complaints about alleged attacks on them by police but no FIR has been filed against the agency till date.

The other lawyers for the petitioners alleged that the government has not complied with the court order to file a response within four weeks of the last date of hearing on December 19.

The bench, however, declined to pass any interim order and granted time till April 29 to the government to file a reply.

New Delhi, Jul 2: In the midst of India's tense border standoff with China, the defence ministry on Thursday approved procurement of a number of frontline fighter jets, missile systems and other platforms at a cost of Rs 38,900 crore to bolster the combat capability of the armed forces, officials said.

They said 21 MiG-29 fighter jets are being bought from Russia while 12 Su-30 MKI aircraft will be procured from Russia. The ministry has also approved a separate proposal to upgrade existing 59 MiG-29 aircraft.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The procurement of 21 MiG-29 and upgrading of the existing fleet of MiG-29 are estimated to cost the government Rs 7,418 crore while purchase of 12 new Su-30 MKI from the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd will be made at a cost of Rs 10,730 crore, the officials said.

The DAC also approved procurement of long-range land-attack cruise missile systems with a range of 1,000 KM and Astra Missiles for Navy and Air Force.

The officials said cost of these design and development proposals is in the range of Rs 20,400 crore.

"While acquisition of Pinaka missile systems will enable raising additional regiments over and above the ones already inducted, addition of long-range land attack missile systems having a firing range of 1000 KM to the existing arsenal will bolster the attack capabilities of the Navy and the Air Force," said a defence ministry official.

"Similarly induction of Astra Missiles having beyond visual range capability will serve as a force multiplier and immensely add to the strike capability of the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force," he said.
