Narendra Modi plays Muslim card, says 25% voted for him

August 19, 2013

Narendra_ModiNew Delhi, Aug 19: Gujarat Chief Minister and the BJP election camp¬aign committee chief Nar-e¬ndra Modi’s poll mantra to party leaders at the crucial meeting on Sunday was to meet the political aspirations of all sections of society, including Musl¬ims, whom he feels are also looking for “political space”.

At the brainstorming session to discuss poll strategies in the run-up to the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls, which was attended by campaign committee and sub-committee members, state unit chiefs and organisational secretaries, Modi said: “In Gujarat, around 20-25 per cent of minorities voted for the BJP (in the Assembly polls) and we need to reach out to them and other sections of society, including dalits, tribals and poor Muslims in the rest of the country also.”

Modi, considered a Hindutva icon, said he told the minority community in his state that the Congress had not done anything for them. He asked party leaders to adopt a similar approach across the country to win over the minority voters. He also said there are different segments within the Muslims, like Shias, Sunnis, Bohras and others, and they can be reached with promises of redressing their specific grievances.

Still blamed by many for the post-Godhra riots, Modi’s recent “puppy” analogy, while referring to the 2002 riot deaths had triggered a political slugfest. The party also gave a call to work for the success of "Mission 272+" for the general polls and winning the Assembly polls in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

Interestingly, party veteran L.K. Advani, considered Modi’s strongest critic, praised the "success" of Modi’s recent Hyderabad rally, it is learnt. Advani attacked the Congress for its "misgovernance" and said the BJP needs to utilise the fact that people are looking for a change because of the Congress’ misrule.

The party top brass asked leaders and workers to strengthen the party till the booth level and reach out to prospective voters from all segments and age groups. Both Modi and party chief Rajnath Singh said that the mood in the country is strongly against the Congress and the main opposition is the only viable alternative.

Modi underscored the need for tapping the young and first-time voters who, he said, are restless for change. Modi said the party needs to implement its poll plans effectively in the coming 200 days.

The party is planning to start the candidate selection process from next month.

Meanwhile, Rajnath Singh issued a virtual gag order on state units not to pass any resolution demanding Modi to be declared the prime ministerial candidate. Reprimanding the Bihar unit office-bearers, including senior leader Sushil Kumar Modi, for passing such a resolution on Saturday, Singh said he is aware of his responsibilities and knew what decisions need to be taken and when, sources said. He also reiterated the party’s stand that only the parliamentary board will decide on the PM candidate.

New Delhi, Feb 3: In the third such incident inside of a week, two unidentified persons opened fire outside Gate No. 5 of Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday night, the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) said.

A statement issued by the committee, a group comprising students and alumni of the university formed to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, said the attackers were on a red Rcooty.

No one was injured in the attack. One of the miscreants was wearing a red jacket, the statement said.

"Firing has taken place at Gate No.5 of Jamia Millia Islamia right now by two unidentified persons. As per report, one of them was wearing a red jacket and driving a red Scooty having vehicle no. 1532 or 1534," the statement said.

Police said they were verifying the JCC's claims.

Asim Mohammed Khan, former Congress MLA from Okhla, said the incident occurred around 11.30 pm. "We heard the gunshot. That is when we stepped out to see and the two men left on a Scooty," a student said.

"We have taken down the vehicle number and called police," he added.

This is the third firing incident in the Jamia Nagar area in a week.

On Thursday, a minor fired at anti-CAA protesters marching towards Rajghat, injuring a student.

Two days later, a 25-year-old fired two rounds in air in Shaheen Bagh in Jamia Nagar. No one was hurt in the incident.

The incident on Sunday night triggered panic in the area. A police vehicle had reached the spot after the incident but was chased away by angry students.

Hundreds of students and locals gathered outside the university.

Many raised slogans against the Delhi Police. They also staged a dharna outside the Jamia Nagar police station.

Shezad Ahmed, a JMI student and resident of Zakir Nagar, said they were not even allowed to protest peacefully.

"We are not going to be deterred by such incidents. We will continue with our protest," he added.

New Delhi, Jun 30: Short video making app TikTok, one of the 59 apps banned by the Central government on Tuesday, has said that it complies with all data privacy and security requirements under the Indian law and has not shared any information of its users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Tiktok India posted the statement issued by Nikhil Gandhi, Head of TikTok, India.

"The Government of India has issued an interim order for the blocking of 59 apps, including TikTok and we are in the process of complying with it. We have been invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and has not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government," reads the statement.

"Further, if we are requested to in the future we would not do so. We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity. TikTok has democratized the internet by making it available in 14 Indian languages, with hundreds of millions of users, artists, story-tellers, educators and performers depending on it for their livelihood, many of whom are first-time internet users," the statement further reads.

Amid border tensions with China in Eastern Ladakh, the Centre had on Monday banned 59 mobile apps including Tik Tok, UC Browser and other Chinese apps "prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity and defence" of the country.

A senior official at the IT ministry said the prime reason to block the apps under section 69 A of Information Technology Act is to stop the violation and threat to the security of the state and public order and to plug the data leaks.

"Almost all of them have some preferential Chinese interest. Few are from countries like Singapore. However, the majority have parent companies which are Chinese," the official said.

This move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace, Ministry of Information Technology said.
