Rupee at all-time low, falls to 62.46 per dollar; sensex falls 225 points

Rupee_at_all-time_lowMumbai, Aug 19: The rupee dropped to a record low of 62.46 per dollar in late morning trade on Monday on persistent demand for the US currency from banks and importers coupled with capital outflows from foreign funds.

A firm US currency in the overseas market also affected the rupee value against the dollar, a forex dealer said.

The rupee resumed lower at 62.30 per dollar as against the last weekend's level of 61.65 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) Market and dropped further to a new record low of 62.45.

However, it recovered to 62.21 before quoting at 62.34 per dollar at 1045 hours.

It showed a loss of 69 paise, or 1.12 per cent, from its last close.

The US dollar edged modestly higher in the early trade ahead of key Federal Reserve events this week that may offer more signals about when policy makers will begin tapering monetary stimulus.

Sensex tumbled by 225 points

Meanwhile BSE benchmark sensex tumbled by 225 points in late morning trade today on persistent selling pressure in banking, capital goods, auto, PSU and realty sectors triggered by further depreciation of rupee against the dollar.

The rupee hit a record low of 62.45 per dollar in the late morning deals today.

Foreign capital outflows continued to affect the market sentiment. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 563.23 crore last Friday, as per provisional data from the stock exchanges.

The BSE-30 share index Sensex resumed lower at 18,587.38 points and dropped further to a low of 18,303.20 before quoting 18,373.17 at 1040 hours.

It showed a loss of 225.01 points or 1.21 per cent from its last weekend's level.

The NSE 50-share barometer Nifty also fell by 86 points, or 1.56 per cent, to 5,421.85 at 1040 hours.

Major losers were - M&M (4.94 pc), Bajaj Auto (4.63 pc), ICICI Bank (3.74 pc), Bharti Airtel (3.62 pc), Hero Motocorp (3.12 pc) and L&T (2.11 pc).

Most Asian stocks fell for a third straight day as worries about the Federal Reserve's policy outlook and rising US Treasury yields weighed on sentiment.

Key benchmark indices in Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Taiwan were down by 0.08 to 3.79 per cent, while indices in Japan and Singapore rose by 0.02 to 0.35 per cent, respectively.

New Delhi, Aug 3: Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani on Monday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the timely supply of food and medical assistance to meet the requirement in Afghanistan.

During their telephonic conversation, PM Modi also reiterated India's commitment to the people of Afghanistan in their quest for a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Afghanistan, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement on Monday.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the evolving security situation in the region and other areas of mutual bilateral interest.
Both leaders also exchanged greetings on Eid-Al-Adha.

Kozhikode: An Air India Express flight from Dubai with 190 people on board overshot the Kozhikode tabletop runway on landing there today. The Boeing 737 “fell off” the runway into the valley, broke into two causing death and devastation. 

According to reports, around 20 people were dead including two pilots.

An Air India spokesperson said: “Air India Express flight IX 1344 operated by Boeing 737 aircraft from Dubai to Calicut overshot the runway at Kozhikode at 7.41 pm Friday. No fire reported at the time of landing. There are 174 passengers, 10 infants, two pilots and five cabin crew on board. Rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care. We will soon share the update in this regard.”

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is probing this accident. “Prima facie, the aircraft landed beyond the touchdown point and fell into a valley. It has broken into two. We suspect some casualties. More information is awaited,” said a senior DGCA official.

Taking to twitter, defence minister Rajnath Singh wrote: “Devastating news from Kozhikode, Kerala. I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to an accident carrying several passengers on Air India flight. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Foreign minister S Jaishankar tweeted: “Deeply distressed to hear about the Air India Express tragedy at Kozhikode. Prayers are with the bereaved families and those injured. We are ascertaining further details.”

While, senior BJP leader from Kerala K J Alphons tweeted: “Second tragedy of the day in Kerala: Air India Express skids off the run way at Kozhikode, front portion splits , pilot dies and lots of passengers injured . All passengers evacuated. Very lucky the aircraft didn’t catch fire.”

More details are awaited.

Baharampore, Jan 30: Two persons were killed and one was injured in a clash over a protest programme against the CAA and the proposed NRC in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Wednesday, police said.

The incident occured after an argument broke out between the two sides at Jalangi over a protest programme opposing Citizenship Amendment Act.

According to the police, a scuffle broke out between the local TMC leaders and residents' forum 'Nagarik Mancha', which was observing a shutdown in the area against the amended citizenship act and the proposed country-wide NRC.

The residents' forum was asked to withdraw the shutdown and the situation turned violent as both sides came to blows and hurled bombs at each other. Several two-wheelers and cars were damaged and set on fire during the clash.

Local TMC MP Abu Taher, denied that the party was involved in the clash and alleged that the violence was by Congress and CPI(M) supporters.

"I have requested the police to look into the incident. The culprits should be immediately arrested," he said.

Senior Congress leader and MLA Manoj Chakraborty said that the party was not involved in the incident and demanded judicial inquiry into it.

The injured have been rushed to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital here, the police said.

The Muslim-majority district had witnessed violence and arson during the anti-CAA protests across the state in December last year.

West Bengal became the fourth state after Left-ruled Kerala, and Punjab and Rajasthan, where the Congress is in power, to have passed a resolution on January 27 against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The state assembly had on September 6, 2019, passed a resolution against NRC.
