Sonia Gandhi fine, 'relieved' that Food Bill was passed, Modi wishes her good health

Sonia_Gandhi_fineNew Delhi, Aug 27: Sonia Gandhi is doing 'fine' after being discharged from Delhi's AIIMS hospital, where she was taken last night just before a crucial vote on the Food Security Bill, a landmark welfare scheme she had championed.

Hours after she returned home on Tuesday, the Congress president received wishes from across the political spectrum.

"Glad to know that Soniaji's health is fine. Wishing her best of health for the future," tweeted Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi this morning.

Mrs Gandhi, 66, was taken straight from Parliament to AIIMS after she complained of chest pain and fever. She was in the hospital for nearly five hours.

"She was very tense about the Food Bill, and that she had to miss the voting. She was relieved when we told her it has been passed. Now she is fine. All the tests say everything is fine," said Union minister Kumari Selja.

Mrs Gandhi left Parliament at 8:15 pm escorted by her son and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. She appeared to stumble as she walked down Parliament steps. Mrs Gandhi held Kumari Selja's hand and recovered her balance.

According to doctors, she was initially admitted to the Cardio-Neuro centre and later shifted to the ICU as a precautionary measure. Later she left for home in her own car at 1:30 am.

The Lok Sabha passed the Food Security Bill after nearly nine hours of debate and soon after senior leaders went to visit Mrs Gandhi at the hospital, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Union Ministers Anand Sharma and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit also visited the hospital.

The police cordoned off a 500-metre stretch leading to the Intensive Care Unit to allow a steady stream of VIPs.

Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters: "Madam had some medicine for a headache, because of which she felt uneasy."

In a rare speech in Parliament on Monday, Mrs Gandhi had urged parties to unanimously support a "chance to make history" by clearing the Food Security Bill, the world's largest scheme to fight hunger that legally entitles 67 per cent of India to cheap food.

Speculation over the Congress president's health peaked in 2011, when she left India for a surgery in the United States. But neither her family nor the ruling party disclosed anything about her condition at the time.

New Delhi, July 1: In a terrific incident with chilling echoes of the 2015 Dadri mob lynching, a Muslim man, who was carrying meat, was savagely attacked by a mob belonging to a saffron outfit in the presence of in BJP ruled Haryana on the eve of Eid al-Adha. 

The incident occurred at around 9 a.m. on Friday, July 31 at Badshahpur village in Haryana’s Gurgaon, when Lukman was transporting meat in a pic-kup truck. 

The attack was captured on mobile phones by onlookers and the video clips of the incident are now spreading on social media. 

A group of saffronite cow vigilantes chased the truck for about 8 km managed waylay it. Lukman, who was driving the truck was pulled out and brutally assaulted on the suspicion that he was transporting cow meat.

Just like Dadri, the police were faster at sending the meat to a lab for testing than catching any one of the suspects. One of the assailants - Pradeep Yadav- has been arrested. 

After being beating to an inch of his life, Lukman was bundled into the pick-up truck and taken back to Gurgaon's Badshahpur village where the goons started thrashing him again.

This is when the police stepped in and stopped them - only to find the assailants fearless enough to even take on them.

Lukman was taken to a hospital and the police filed a case against "unidentified individuals" even though the video of the incident recorded by witnesses shows the faces of the assailants.

The owner of the vehicles said that the meat was buffalo and he has been in the business for 50 years.

The police have so far refused to give a statement on record on the incident and explain their inaction as seen on video.

New Delhi, Jul 24: India reported the highest single-day spike of 49,310 coronavirus cases on Friday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total COVID-19 positive cases stand at 12,87,945 including 4,40,135 active cases, 8,17,209 cured/discharged/migrated.
With 740 deaths in the last 24 hours, the cumulative toll reached 30,601.

Maharashtra has reported 3,47,502 coronavirus cases, the highest among states and Union Territories in the country. A total of 1,92,964 cases have been reported from Tamil Nadu till now, while Delhi has recorded 1,27,364 coronavirus cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 3,52,801 samples were tested for coronavirus on Thursday and overall 1,54,28,170 samples have been tested so far.

New Delhi, Jan 7: The Delhi Police has filed an FIR against JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh and 19 others for allegedly attacking security guards and vandalising the server room of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on January 4.

The police registered the FIR on January 5.

In the complaint filed by the JNU administration, the University alleged that the accused were involved in physical violence and pushed the women guards, verbally abused them and threatened them of dire consequences if they opened the lock of university's communication and information (CIS) office.

"They illegally trespassed the University property with the criminal intention to damage the public property. They damaged servers and made it dysfunctional. They also damaged fiber optic power supplies and broke the biometric systems inside the room," the University officials alleged.

This incident allegedly occurred a day before Aishe Ghosh, other JNU students and teachers were attacked by a masked mob inside the campus.
