New Delhi, Sep 2: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad has said that a BJP led by Narendra Modi would not come to power at the Centre since the Gujarat chief minister was not like former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Lalu Prasad said Vajpayee was liberal and he became PM "at a different time".
"Now, the person Atalji disliked is being projected as the party's face," he said in an interview to The Hindu on Monday.
He said he was a Rajya Sabha member during the 2002 Gujarat riots and Vajpayee had agreed "internally" to impose President's Rule in the state, but L.K. Advani "protected" Modi.
"Now the pupil has betrayed the master," Lalu said.
On the coming general elections, he said: "The battle for Hastinapur in 2014 will determine whether India will remain intact or get divided."
He said the UPA would return to power for a third term "based on a minimum common programme" and his mind was to "go with the Congress".
"Soniaji is a great leader," he said. He also ruled out a third front forming the government, saying "our experience with this has been bitter".
