Adamant Advani opposes Modi as candidate for PM

September 12, 2013

Adamant_AdvaniNew Delhi, Sep 12: BJP stalwart L K Advani has dug in his heels. He refused to drop his opposition to Narendra Modi as the party's prime ministerial nominee, leaving party president Rajnath Singh with little choice but to push on regardless of the veteran's objections. This will undoubtedly cast a shadow of controversy over Modi's anointment and show up BJP as a divided house.

The BJP president on Wednesday cited RSS's endorsement of Modi as well as the majority opinion in the party to tell Advani that Modi should be declared the PM candidate without any further delay. But Advani, said sources, remained unmoved. He had earlier objected to Modi as the saffron choice for the top job on the ground that an announcement now would shift the focus from Congress's failures to Modi's controversial persona.

Fresh efforts to bring Advani around are expected to continue on Thursday, although hopes of a breakthrough remain slender. With Advani unlikely to yield, Rajnath looks almost set to call a meeting of the party's parliamentary board on Friday to make the announcement. Although the party constitution empowers the president to make the crucial call after consultation with members of the parliamentary board, Rajnath is likely to call the full house to advertise that the decision has the backing of the majority in the board — that is, eight of 11 members (excluding ailing former PM A B Vajpayee).

Sources said that Rajnath can put off the announcement to Monday only if Advani agrees to be present at the press conference — which at present seems an unlikely prospect.

Sources said that a decision on Modi, even in the face of resistance, will reflect what has been touted as the overwhelming mood of the cadre, but acknowledged that Advani's tenacious opposition may turn the moment into a messy affair. Besides Advani, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj is opposed to the idea of Modi being declared the PM candidate ahead of the state polls set for October-November. Sources expect her to make a strong argument against party engaging in open defiance of Advani's views.

Rajnath also had a meeting with Murli Manohar Joshi, another member of the parliamentary board who argued for the announcement to be put off until after the assembly polls. But Joshi is, sources reckon, not expected to come in the way of the "majority view".

The party president's last-gasp effort to get Advani to relent stemmed from his anxiety to avoid a growing perception that the party is a divided house. However, with sthe quest for unanimity proving to be elusive, the party president is determined to press ahead with his plan for the big announcement before Modi's birthday on September 17. That the inauspicious Hindu period of pitrapaksha — the fortnight when all the important calls are put on hold — starts on September 19 have contributed to the Rajnath's anxiety for a closure on the issue by Monday.

BJP leaders admit Advani's decision to oppose Modi threatens to take some of the sheen off the expected announcement as the party will be seen to be divided at a big moment. This, some feel, may well be the calculation of Modi's detractors.

New Delhi, Jul 10: Nepal has banned all Indian news channels, except DD News, for alleged propaganda against the country.

Reports say that Nepal cable operators have stopped getting signals of Indian news channels.

Nepal government spokesperson Yuvaraj Khatiwada said: "We request all not to disseminate news that infringes sovereignty and self-respect of Nepalis. This includes the media of neighbouring countries. We might seek both political and legal remedies."

Earlier, Nepal has amended its map which show some Indian territory as part of it.

Nepal's parliament on June 13 adopted unanimously the Constitution Amendment Bill, paving the way for accommodating the updated political-administrative map, which includes Indian areas of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura, in its symbol.

As the Indian workforce navigates a shrinking job market in lockdown times, two in five professionals believe that the number of jobs and scheduled interviews will decrease in the next two weeks, a new LinkedIn survey said on Tuesday.

The news comes as bittersweet for Indian professionals as more than one in three stated they will now spend more time working on their resumes and preparing for interviews.

Professionals from healthcare, manufacturing and corporate service industries anticipate a decrease in personal spending and personal investments in the next six months, according to the findings of the fortnightly LinkedIn Workforce Confidence Index based on responses from 2,903 professionals in the country.

This findings showed that while India's overall confidence remains steady, the country's confidence in jobs is beginning to trend downward.

However, employees at large enterprises (firms with over 10,000 workers) are more confident about the future of their employers when compared to their peers from mid-market and SMB companies.

The findings showed that 41 % of enterprise professionals think their companies will do better in the next six months, while 63 % think their companies will be better off one year from now.

However, "the enterprise professionals are least confident about the future of their jobs, finances and careers, when compared to their SMB and mid-market peers".

The findings showed that 52 % of healthcare, 48% of corporate services, and 41 % of manufacturing professionals anticipate a decrease in investments in the next 6 months.

Over the past three months, many organizations have shifted to a remote working model to circumvent the pandemic and ensure business continuity.

Three in five marketing professionals feel confident about being effective when working remotely, joined by more than half of project management and engineering professionals, who are also confident about the effectiveness of remote working.

In contrast to this optimism, only 39 % of HR, 36% of finance, and 31 % of education professionals think they would be effective when working remotely, said the survey.

New Delhi, May 19: Former Union Minister P Chidambaram said that as the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus scare began from Monday, his thoughts were with the people of Kashmir who were in a "terrible lockdown within a lockdown."

The senior Congress leader said that at least now, the people in the rest of India will understand that he dubbed the "enormity of the injustice" done to those who were detained in Kashmir and those still under detention" immediately before and after the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution on August 5, 2019.

Chidambaram said that former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was the "worst sufferer" of preventive detention and even courts had shirked their constitutional duty with respect to detainees.

"The worst sufferers are Mehbooba Mufti and her senior party colleagues who are still in custody in a locked-down state in a locked-down country. They are deprived of every human right," he said in a statement.

"I cannot believe that for nearly 10 months, the courts will shirk their constitutional duty to protect the human rights of citizens," he added.

The detention on Mehbooba Mufti under the Public Safety Act (PSA) had been extended for three more months on May 5. Booked under the stringent PSA, she was initially kept at the Hari Niwas guesthouse in Srinagar but later shifted to a Tourism Department hut in the Chashma Shahi area.

She was shifted to her Gupkar Road official residence on April 7.

Besides Mehbooba Mufti, two other former Chief Ministers -- Omar Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah -- were also detained under the PSA but later released.
