New Delhi, Sep 23: Charging that some main political parties are trying to "dangerously" disturb the communal harmony in Uttar Pradesh ahead of Lok Sabha polls, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today warned such forces of stringent action.

He also demanded that the Centre put in place a mechanism to check misuse of social media and mobile phones to fan communal tension.

"At present, it seems that some of the main political parties are trying to dangerously harm the communal harmony of the state in view of 2014 general elections. Efforts are on (by them) to polarise people of the state," Yadav said during a meeting of National Integration Council (NIC) here.

He said small incidents like vehicle accidents, eve teasing, which can be sorted out at local or panchayat level, are being converted into big problems by vested interests.

Talking about the violence in Muzaffarnagar, he said strict action will be taken against those found to be involved in it.

As per the 2011 census, Uttar Pradesh has a population of about 20 crore and Muslim community forms 18.5 per cent of it.

"One out of five individuals in UP is a Muslim who has been living peacefully in the state known for its 'ganga-jamuni' tehzeeb (people of all faith living together)", he said.

"But from the past decades, efforts are being made to disturb communal harmony which has resulted in riots," Yadav said.

He termed the demolition of Babri masjid some years back as a pre-conceived conspiracy by vested interest in order to harm communal harmony.

"Demolition of Babri masjid demolition is a black chapter in the history of country and state's communal harmony," the Chief Minister said, adding his top priority is to ensure peace and harmony in Uttar Pradesh.

New Delhi, Jan 16: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat on Thursday said that he supported a negotiated peace deal between the US and Taliban in Afghanistan.

Gen. Rawat was speaking along with other world leaders at Raisina dialogue organised by India's influential think-tank Observer Research Foundation (ORF).

Arguing that terrorism was going to stay in the world as long as states were going to use it against other states, he said it was important to prevent states from using terrorism as a "proxy war".

"The only way to deal with it was what the US did post 9/11," he said, adding that the war against terror was necessary.

However, now a peace deal with Taliban is required, Gen. Rawat said.

"It must be a negotiated peace deal so that the Taliban stops using terrorism," he added. Hinting that the US should maintain its presence in Afghanistan, the CDS said that though Afghan security forces are now equipped to fight back terror groups in Afghanistan but they still need support.

The newly appointed CDS officially confirmed that India has shifted its stance on Taliban. India has traditionally been opposed to the Pakistan-backed Taliban in Afghanistan. Thousands of Afghans were given refuge in India when they fled the country due to oppression and terrorism of the Taliban regime. India is in alignment with the democratically elected government in Kabul that the Taliban remains supported by Pakistan.

Lucknow, May 3:Holding the Tablighi Jamaat responsible for the spread of COVID-19, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said that being infected with a virus is not a crime but to hide it is definitely a crime.

Speaking at a programme of a news channel, Adityanath said, "The role of Tablighi Jamaat was most condemnable. To get a disease is not a crime but to hide a disease which is infectious is definitely a crime. And this crime has been done by those associated with the Tablighi Jamaat."

"In Uttar Pradesh and other places where the spread of the coronavirus has been seen, Tablighi Jamaat is behind it. Had they not hidden the disease and went about like its carriers, then perhaps we would have controlled the coronavirus outbreak to a large extend," he said.

The chief minister said action would be taken against them for the "crime that they have committed".

A Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi in March turned out to be a major source of COVID-19 cases, with those who attended the meet returned home in different parts of the country after being infected with the deadly virus.
