Hyderabad, Oct 6: Violence continued in Vizianagaram town in coastal Andhra Sunday despite indefinite curfew imposed by police to tackle violent protests, which broke out after union cabinet's decision to divide the state.

Violating the curfew, people in some parts of the town took to the streets, clashed with police and indulged in arson and stone pelting.

Police fired rubber bullets, teargas shells and carried out to baton charge as protestors including women attacked them with stones at few places in the town, about 700 km from Hyderabad.

Two policemen sustained injuries in stone pelting by protestors. Despite the curfew, the agitators attacked Satya College owned by state Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana and ransacked furniture.

Protestors have been damaging the properties of Satyanarayana and his relatives, blaming him for failure to stall the state's division.

Security was further tightened at the residences and other properties of Satyanarayana and his family members.

With violence continuing in the fort town, paramilitary forces were deployed. Personnel of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Border Security Force (BSF) were patrolling the streets.

Special police officer Vikram Singh Mann said the police would deal firmly with those violating curfew. He said anti-social elements were indulging in violence and looting.

The official said the curfew would continue till the situation completely comes under control. Police arrested dozens of people indulging in violence.

The curfew was clamped after large-scale violence and arson for the second consecutive day Saturday. The protestors set afire dozens of vehicles, public and private property.

The streets turned into battle zone with protestors pelting stones on policemen at several places.

Police repeatedly baton-charged the mob and used teargas shells but this failed to check the violence, forcing the authorities to impose curfew.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has directed police to deal firmly with anti-social elements destroying government and private properties.

As protests continued in Seemandhra (Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra) against the decision to divide the state, the chief minister reviewed the law and order situation.

He asked chief secretary and director general of police to closely monitor the situation with district collectors and superintendents of police. He directed officials to be on alert and to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

New Delhi, Jan 24: The Election Commission of India on Friday told the Supreme Court that its 2018 direction asking poll candidates to declare their criminal antecedents in electronic and print media has not helped curb criminalisation of politics. The poll panel suggested that instead of asking candidates to declare criminal antecedents in the media, political parties should be asked not to give tickets to candidates with criminal background.

A bench of Justices R F Nariman and S Ravindra Bhat asked the ECI to come up with a framework within one week which can help curb criminalisation of politics in nation's interest.

The top court asked the petitioner BJP leader and advocate Ashiwini Upadhyay and the poll panel to sit together and come up with suggestions which would help him in curbing criminalisation of politics.

In September 2018, a five-judge Constitution bench had unanimously held that all candidates will have to declare their criminal antecedents to the Election Commission before contesting polls and had called for a wider publicity, through print and electronic media about antecedents of candidates.

Kolkata, Jul 20: As many as 13 migrant workers who came to their native village in West Bengal's Bankura district were denied entry at the quarantine centre by the locals.

As a result, the workers had to set up a tent accommodation at a nearby Beraban forest area and lived together in a single tent there, without adequate food, drinking water and basic facilities.

The migrant labourers came from Rajasthan after four months of COVID-19 lockdown which was imposed nationwide on March 25 to contain the spread of coronavirus.

When they arrived at Jagadalla village in the Bankura district and tried to put up at a village school building for two weeks self-quarantine, angry villagers vehemently protested against their entry fearing Covid infections in their village.

Sources said that local police and panchayat members also failed to make the villagers understand the fact that if the labourers strictly stayed in self-quarantine there would be no chance of any further infection.

"The school is located quite within our neighbourhood. If they stay there and tested positive, they might spread Covid infections in the village. We cannot allow them to stay in the school building," said Aniket Goswami, a villager.

New Delhi, Jan 1: On the New Year's eve, the railways announced fare hike across its network effective from January 1, 2020, according to an order issued on Tuesday.

While suburban fares remain unchanged, ordinary non-AC, non-suburban fares were increased by 1 paise per km of journey.

The railways also announced a two paise/km hike in fares of mail/express non-AC trains and four paise/km hike in the fares of AC classes.

The fare hike is also applicable to premium trains such as Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Duronto, according to the order.

In the Delhi-Kolkata Rajdhani, which covers a distance of 1,447 km, the hike at the rate of 4 paise per km will be around Rs 58.

According to the order, there will not be any change in the reservation fee and superfast charge and the hike in fares will not be applicable to tickets already booked.

The last such hike was announced in 2014-2015 when fares of all classes of trains were raised by 14.2 per cent and freight charges by 6.5 per cent. However, since then, the railways introduced the flexi-fare scheme which significantly raised fares on select trains and launched trains like Vande Bharat Express and Tejas Express which have relatively higher fares. Trains with dynamic pricing like Suvidha Express were also introduced.
