No respite from power crisis in Seemandhra, cyclone threat adds to woes

Hyderabad/New Delhi, Oct 9: Andhra Pradesh government today put all its departments on high alert in view of the cyclone threat as Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy appealed to striking government employees to return to work to meet any emergency.

Seemandhra got no respite from power blackouts for the fourth day today while talks with striking government employees failed and a cyclone threat added to the worries of the Andhra Pradesh government which faced calls for clamping ESMA to restore normalcy.

As the deadlock in talks including with employees of the power sector in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions showed little sign of an early settlement, the Centre moved ahead in the process to carve out a separate Telangana state deciding to hold the first meeting of the GoM set up to look into the bifurcation of AP on Friday. The GoM was announced by the Union Cabinet on October 3.

Several parts of Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema continued to reel under power crisis as the electricity employees continued their strike in protest against the proposed division of AP.

Congress said ESMA should be invoked by the party-ruled government in AP to bring normalcy in Seemandhra region even as it asserted that the decision on Telangana is irreversible but nothing can be said about any timeframe.

The power generation remained crippled at the major power stations including in Vijayawada and Rayalaseema.

Prolonged power cuts continued in the Seemandhra region and even cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada were no exception as the indefinite strike of the electricity employees entered the fourth day today.

Union Government is planning to rope in NTPC and Power Grid Corporation to provide electricity to help AP tide over the power outages which has disrupted essential services and movement of trains.

"We are doing something. NTPC and PowerGrid will provide electricity to Andhra Pradesh," Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters in Delhi.

Talks between the state government and striking AP Non-Gazetted Officers Association(APNGOs) to end the ongoing indefinite strike by government employees in Seemandhra collapsed as the latter vowed to continue its agitation.

The association stuck to its stand even as Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy sought to assure it that he would not let the state be divided as long as he remained the CM.

Reddy held talks for over three hours with the APNGOs association leaders at the state Secretariat in Hyderabad to end the impasse, caused due to the indefinite strike launched on August 12.

The chief minister requested the employees to bear in mind the cyclone threat to the coastal region and withdraw the strike to meet any emergency.

According to the Met forecast, the depression that lay centred over north Andamans was expected to turn into a very severe cyclonic storm and cross north Andhra and Odisha coast between Kalingapatnam and Paradeep by the night of October 12 with a maximum sustained wind speed of 175-185 kmph.

New Delhi, Aug 7: India's COVID-19 cases tally crossed 20 lakh mark with the highest single-day spike of 62,538 cases on Friday, said Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The COVID-19 tally rises to 20,27,075 including 6,07,384 active cases, 13,78,106 cured/discharged/migrated and 41,585 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

Maharashtra with 1,46,268 active cases and 3,05,521 cured and discharged patients continues to be the worst affected. The state has also reported 16,476 deaths due to the infection.

Tamil Nadu has 54,184 active cases while 2,14,815 patients have been discharged after treatment in the state. 4,461 deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in the state.

Andhra Pradesh with 80,426 active cases is the third on the list. There are 1,04,354 cured and discharged patients and 1,681 deaths reported from the state.

Delhi now has 10,072 active cases and 1,26,116 cured and discharged patients. 4,044 people have lost their lives due to the disease in the Union Territory so far.

New Delhi,  Apr 2: Muslim cleric Imam Umer Ilyasi appealed to all the individuals who attended Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi recently, not to hide from the government and not to be scared of it.

"I appeal to all the Muslim brothers and mosque managing committees involved in the Jamaat congregation to please come out and inform the government. You do not need to feel scared of the government," Ilyasi told news agency.

He added: "You do not need to feel scared of the government. If you are quarantined, it doesn't mean you will be punished. This is for your and other people's safety."
On the subject of people likely to be quarantined, he said that if one does get quarantined, he or she must not think those quarantine facilities are jails. "If you are quarantined, it doesn't mean you will be punished. This is for your and other people's safety. Quarantine is the cure, you do not need to worry about it," he added.

Ilyasi further appealed to the people that one must not associate religion with the coronavirus outbreak. "Islam talks about saving one person's life and securing a person's life. Do not connect the outbreak with religion as this outbreak does not affect any religion or caste in particular," he said.

With regards to the lockdown being imposed by the centre, he said: "I appeal to all that we must obey the lockdown judiciously as there is no medicine or cure for this disease."
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's latest bulletin said that there are 1,834 coronavirus positive cases in India, including 1,649 active cases, 144 cured/discharged/migrated people and 41 deaths.

New Delhi, Feb 29: Amid the raging communal violence in the entire north-east Delhi earlier this week, there were people who were trying to save persons and families from the "other community" from the fury of the mobs of their own community.

Naeem Ali Pradhan, 34, from Shiv Vihar, helped at least 7-8 Hindus on the night of February 24 -- when the violence was at its peak-- escape to safer locations. Shiv Vihar is one of the worst affected areas in the violence.

According to Naeem Ali, that night mobs attacked dozens of shops on the road and later tried to enter inside the residential areas.

Suddenly, he spotted a group of youth who were looking hassled and frantically asking for directions.

"I saw them. Thye were Hindus who were trying to escape a mob looking to target them. They had lost their way inside the streets of our colony. I along with other Muslim men escorted them to the nearby Hindu locality," Naeem, who is also a member of the Aman Committee constituted by the Delhi police, told ANI.

"Several shops which were on the roads including some showrooms were attacked by a group. These Hindus were worried as a mob which was on the main road was attacking people. They asked me the address of a colony as they were unable to find their way," Naeem said.
