Letter on Ram temple sparks controversy, Home Secy removed

October 13, 2013

Sarvesh_Chandra_MishraLucknow, Oct 13: The UP government late Saturday transferred Secretary (Home) and suspended a section officer of the department for issuing a letter that "mistakenly" called senior administration and police officers for a meeting "to discuss the construction of a temple at Ramjanmabhoomi, like the reconstruction of Somnath temple, by enacting a parliamentary law".

The letter, issued by Secretary (Home) Sarvesh Chandra Mishra, called officers for a meeting with Principal Secretary (Home) R M Srivastava on October 14 to discuss the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's (VHP) proposed Sankalp Diwas in Ayodhya on October 18.

The subject of the letter mentioned: "Regarding the construction of temple at Ramjanmabhoomi like the reconstruction of Somnath temple, with the enacting a parliamentary law by Government of India."

The UP government will also conduct an inquiry into the "clerical mistake" and "negligence" on the part of Home department officials in the confidential letter that was sent out on October 8.

The "error" in the letter's subject has created a flutter in political circles.

Cabinet Minister Azam Khan said the government has taken the matter very seriously and people responsible for this will be punished.

"What is the level of this mistake? How did the name of Somnath temple come into the letter? An inquiry will be conducted. We want to know how deep the fascist forces have penetrated," he said.

Talking to reporters on Saturday, Principal Secretary (Home) Srivastava said the subject of the letter was the result of "negligence" by some officials in the department.

He said the meeting was to take place Monday through a video conference to discuss the VHP's programmes on October 18.

The Principal Secretary claimed that the information collected by the intelligence about the objective of the proposed VHP programmes was "mistakenly" mentioned in the subject of the letter — even though it is not a norm to mention subject in a meeting notice.

Srivastava said the letter was not related to any government policy and it was only a meeting notice to discuss the law and order situation.

He said the Sankalp Diwas functions are proposed by the VHP in the sequence of its earlier 84-kosi yatra and the meeting of senior police and administration officials, including those from Faizabad division, was to be held to discuss the situation of law and order and preparation for these proposed programmes.

Srivastava said the government will conduct an inquiry into the alleged negligence by officials who prepared the letter .

He said the department has issued a corrected letter Friday and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav who is also the Home minister, is in the know of the issue.

Bhopal, Mar 4: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister  Kamal Nath on Tuesday asserted that there was no threat to his government.

Nath's comments came when he was asked about reports of alleged 'poaching' attempts being made by the opposition BJP in the state.

“The legislators are telling me that they are being offered so much money. I am telling the MLAs to take it, if they are getting this free money,” Nath told reporters here on the sidelines of a programme.

Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh on Monday alleged that his party MLAs were being offered “huge money by BJP leaders” as part of the saffron party's “poaching” attempt to destablise the Kamal Nath government.

When Nath was asked about any threat to the stability of his government in Madhya Pradesh, he said, “There is nothing to worry about.”

Reacting to Nath's statement, state BJP spokesman Rajneesh Agrawal told PTI that his party has nothing to do with the allegations.

“In fact, these speculations and allegations are part of the internal bickering of among Congress leaders to get nominated for the Rajya Sabha polls,” he said.

After Digvijaya Singh's remarks on Monday, senior BJP leader and former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan accused the Congress veteran of making false statements to create sensationalism.

“Speaking lies to create sensationalism is Digvijaya's habit. Probably some of his (Digivijaya's) works were not done and he wants to create pressure on the CM to get them done,” Chouhan alleged.

New Delhi, Jul 25: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused the government of benefitting by making profits during the coronavirus-induced lockdown when people were in trouble.

He tagged a news report that claimed the Indian Railways was making profit by running 'Shramik trains' for transporting migrants during the pandemic.

"There are clouds of disease and people are in trouble, but one seeks to benefit -- this anti-people government is converting a disaster into profits and is earning," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

The news report claimed that the railways made a profit of Rs 428 crore by running Shramik special trains during the lockdown that transported migrants to their native places.

In another tweet, he lauded the efforts of the Himachal government in conducting a survey to select 'one district, one product', saying he had suggested this sometime back.

"This is a good idea. I had suggested it some time back. Its implementation will need a complete change of mindset," he said on Twitter.

He also tagged a report that stated the state Industries Department is conducting a baseline survey in all districts to select one district, one product for centrally-sponsored Micro and Small Enterprises Cluster Development Programme (MSE-CDP).

Kathmandu, Jul 14: After staking claim to Indian territories of Lipulekh-Kalapani in  a new controversial map,  Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday claimed that Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama, is in Nepal and Lord Rama was Nepali.

“Although real Ayodhya lies at Thori, city in the west of Birgunj, India has claimed that Lord Rama was born there. Due to these continuous claims, even we have believed that deity Sita got married to Prince Rama of India. However, in reality, Ayodhya is a village lying west of Birgunj,” Oli claimed at an event organised at Prime Minister's residence in Kathmandu.

The Prime Minister also blamed India of cultural encroachment by “creating a fake Ayodhya.”

“Balmiki Ashram is in Nepal and the holy place where King Dashrath had executed the rites to get the son is in Ridi. Dashrath’s son Ram was not an Indian and Ayodhya is also in Nepal,” he claimed.

In an attempt to save self from criticism, Oli questioned how Lord Rama could come to Janakpur to marry Sita when there were "no means" of communication. He further said that it to be impossible for Lord Rama to come to Janakpur from present Ayodhya that lies in India.

“Janakpur lies here and Ayodhya there and there is talk of marriage. There was neither telephone nor mobile then how could he know about Janakpur,” Oli said.
