New Delhi, Oct 24: Amid rising domestic demand and a firming global trend, gold prices today regained Rs 32,000 per ten gram level after seven weeks in the national capital.

Gold prices spurted by Rs 480 to Rs 32,410 per ten gram, a level last seen on September 4, while silver held steady at Rs 50,200 per kg on lack of support from industrial units.

Traders said increased buying of gold by stockists and jewellers to meet the rising festive and marriage season demand, amid firming global trend, influenced the sentiment.

While gold gained in domestic markets for the coming Diwali festival demand, a rising trend in global markets as the dollar fell against the euro, boosting demand for precious metals as an alternative investment, remained positive factors for the market.

Gold in London, which normally sets price trend on the domestic front, rose 0.6 per cent to USD 1,341.90 an ounce.

On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity soared by Rs 480 each to Rs 32,410 and Rs 32,210 per ten gram, respectively. The metal had gained Rs 305 yesterday. Sovereign held steady at Rs 25,300 per piece of eight gram.

On the other hand, silver ready and weekly-based delivery held unchanged at Rs 50,200 and Rs 50,000 per kg, respectively.

Silver coins, which normally used for "Puja" on Diwali festival and gifting during marriage celebrations, spurted by Rs 1,000 to Rs 88,000 for buying and Rs 89,000 for selling of 100 pieces on hectic demand.

Lucknow, Jun 2: Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Tuesday said protests in the US after the death of George Floyd, an African-American man, is a clear message to the world that a common man's life has value.

She said this is also guaranteed by the India Constitution, but the governments don't follow it, resulting in the current plight of migrants workers.

Floyd, a 46-year-old restaurant worker from Houston, died in Minneapolis on Monday after a white police officer pinned him to the ground. Video footage showed the officer kneeling on Floyd's neck as he gasped for breath, sparking widespread protests across the US.

"Floyd's killing by police and the 'Black lives matter' agitation in the US have given a clear message to the world that a common man's life has value and it should not be taken for granted," Mayawati said in a tweet in Hindi.

"India's constitution guarantees independence, security, self-respect and pride and governments should give special attention to it. If it was followed, crores of migrants labourers would not have to witness such bad days," she added.

She also demanded better coordination between states to check the spread of coronavirus and said Centre should intervene.

"While coronavirus patients are rising, there is lack of coordination between states and with the Centre, and allegation and counter-allegations are going on and sealing of state borders is unjustified and it is weakening the fight against the virus.  The Centre should intervene," she said in a separate tweet.

Jul 1: Gold prices in India hit an all-time high on Wednesday, tracking a global rally, as surging coronavirus cases in many countries raised the metal's safe-haven appeal.

Local gold futures hit an all-time high of Rs 48,871 ($646.66) per 10 grams in early trade, taking their gains to 25% in 2020 so far. The contract had gained nearly 25% in 2019.

However, this dampened the retail demand for gold in India, the world's second-largest consumer of the precious metal.

"Retail demand is negligible. Buyers are postponing purchases anticipating a correction in prices," said a Mumbai-based bank dealer with a bullion importing bank.

In thin trade, dealers were offering a discount of up to $22 an ounce over official domestic prices on Wednesday afternoon, up from the last week's $18. The domestic price includes a 12.5% import tax and 3% sales tax.

The country's gold imports in May plunged 99% from a year earlier as international air travel was banned and jewellery shops were closed amid a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus.

In overseas market, spot gold firmed near an eight-year peak on Wednesday, as a spike in coronavirus cases in the United and States and many other countries has cast a shadow on hopes for a quicker global economic recovery, driving inflows into safe-haven assets.

According to a latest Reuters tally, the coronavirus has infected more than 10.48 million people worldwide so far.
