Lalu turns gardener in jail, earns Rs 14 per day

Ranchi, Nov 5: Serving time for the multi-crore fodder scam, RJD president Lalu Prasad earns Rs 14 a day for gardening and is apparently happy with tending lawns, flower beds and vegetable patches at the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar.

Jail wardens allotted gardening to scam convicts around a week ago but Lalu started work only a day after the Jharkhand high court rejected his bail plea on October 30. Three IAS and one IRS officer, also convicted in the scam, have turned teachers inside the jail.

Jail sources say Lalu appears to enjoy the hours supervising work and instructing other gardeners. He will get a day-off each week. Spread over 52 acres, the jail boasts of well-maintained lawns, gardens and vegetable plantations.

The influential Bihar politician, who was railway minister between 2004 and 2009, has JD(U) MP Jagdish Sharma and ex-RJD MLA R K Rana - who allegedly conspired with Lalu to siphon off money from the Chaibasa treasury - as co-workers.

Though Lalu holds a political science degree and was invited by Harvard Business School and IIM Ahmedabad to speak on management, jail authorities decided not to allot him teaching due to security reasons. Jharkhand police had recently alerted the jail about a possible threat to Lalu and asked for adequate security. Around 30% of 3,000-odd prisoners at Hotwar are hardcore criminals and 10% Maoists.

Lalu violates Jharkhand jail manual everyday to meet scores of people. "It all amounts to security threat to Lalu," the alert had warned.

New Delhi, Mar 25: The government is likely to agree an economic stimulus package of more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore ($19.6 billion) to fight a downturn in the country that is currently locked down to stem the spread of coronavirus, two sources familiar with the matter told news agency.
The government has not yet finalised the package and discussions are ongoing between Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office, the finance ministry, and Reserve Bank of India (RBI), said both the sources, who asked not to be named as the matter was still under discussion.

One of the sources, a senior government official, said the stimulus plan could be as large as Rs 2.3 lakh crore, but final numbers were still in discussion.

The package could be announced by the end of the week, both sources added.

Bharuch, Mar 5: Vijay Kumar, a resident of the Tamil Nadu has sought help from his friend Abdulkhuda Mohd Hanif Shaikh who is residing in Gujarat to build a temple in his village.

Abdulkhuda Mohd Hanif Shaikh, who also belongs to Tamil Nadu's Paraipatti village and has been residing in Gujarat' Bharuch for a decade has collected Rs 3 lakh from his friends as a donation to build the temple in Paraipatti village in Dindigul district.

"They'd told me 4 months ago and came to me 10 days back. From Vapi to Mehsana, there are several Madrasis, even here in the village too. I personally went to them and collected around Rs 3 Lakh," Shaikh said.

Vijay Kumar said that he stayed in Gujarat for ten days and collected Rs 3 Lakh with him.

"I had sought help from him. I stayed here in Gujarat for 10 days, and went with him from people to people and collected Rs 3 Lakh. No one lives like Hindus or Muslims in our village, everyone lives like friends," he said.

Kochi, Feb 26: Kerala High Court on Wednesday imposed a ban on strikes in schools and colleges that impact the functioning of the campuses.

''The functioning of campuses should not be hampered by the strikes. The colleges are for study, not for strikes. There should not be any march or gherao on campuses. Do not incite anyone for a strike," a bench of Justice PB Suresh Kumar said in its order.

"The order applies to schools and colleges. Do not harm the rights of others. The college can be a venue for peaceful discussions or thoughts. If actions are contrary to the orders of the court, the authorities can take action. They can call the police and restore peace," the order reads.

The Kerala High Court issued the order while hearing a petition filed by 20 educational institutions against campus politics.
