India must play more against tougher teams: Nobbs

The Indian hockey team, which took the bronze medal at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Malaysia, returned home on Monday night to a warm reception at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport here.

Coach Michael Nobbs, who faces a ‘litmus test' in the July-August London Olympic Games, was cautious in his reaction about the team's mixed performance in Malaysia where it failed to defend its crown. “We need to play more matches against tougher teams,” said Nobbs on arrival.

India's best performance in Ipoh came in the bronze medal play-off when it defeated higher-ranked Britain 3-1, after having been beaten by the latter in the league stage of the tournament.

Some of the other teams in the fray were eventual champion New Zealand, South Korea, Argentina, Pakistan and host Malaysia. However, top outfits like Australia, Germany and the Netherlands did not take part in the tournament.

“I'm obviously very pleased. It's a good win and a medal here is what we were aiming at. We would've loved to win the title, but we have done well to get on the podium,” Nobbs had said at the post-match press conference in Malaysia.

Selection issues

The team will have a two-day selection camp in Pune on June 6 and 7 at the Balewadi Complex and there are some issues that Nobbs and the selectors have to address at the camp, ahead of finalising the 16-member team for the London Games.

Among those are whether the team needs a second goalkeeper — with Bharat Chhetri and P.S. Sreejesh in the running — and whether to include young striker Yuvraj Walmiki in the squad as he has reportedly not fully recovered from his hamstring injury sustained during the Olympic qualifiers in New Delhi in February.

Walmiki had gone to Malaysia as a late replacement for another injured player Gurwinder Singh Chandi.

“I think we are a little short on match practice against really tough teams. I would like to play more against Germany, Holland and Australia. If you want to be the best team at some point of time, you need to play against good teams ,” said Nobbs. He conceded it was going to be a tough task to finalise the team for the Games. “It's going to be really tough. It would be one of the toughest things in my life. Everyone wants to be in the team for London Olympics but we can select only 16,” Nobbs said.

“The next few weeks at the camp will be crucial. We really need to work on our attack. Even against Argentina, we reached the circle so many times but we just blew the chances.

“We got to get better. When you play top teams, you have to learn a little bit of change in style. If you don't hit the ball then you are not going to win,” he said.

He termed the reception at the airport from the fans as a bit ‘crazy'. “It's crazy, but we received the same appreciation after beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asian Champions Trophy and on winning an Olympic berth,” he pointed out.

Chennai, Mar 15: Wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni has left the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) training camp following the postponement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) amidst the coronavirus scare.

The former India skipper had joined the CSK's camp earlier this month in order to practice for the upcoming IPL season.

CSK's official handle tweeted a video of Dhoni and captioned the post as: "It has become your home sir!" Keep whistling, as #Thala Dhoni bids a short adieu to #AnbuDen".

Thirty-eight-year-old Dhoni has been currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the tournament.

Earlier this year, Dhoni did not find a place for himself in the BCCI's centrally contracted players list.

BCCI had released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

On Friday, BCCI decided to postpone the IPL until April 15 as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus pandemic.

On Saturday, all the IPL franchises met in Mumbai to discuss as to how to go on with the tournament in the future.

New Delhi, Feb 9: The Indian Fed Cup team will travel to Dubai for this year's competition as the ITF has named the desert city as the new venue for the matches, to be held from March 3 to 7.

The ITF named the new venue after moving out the matches from then Chinese city of Dongguan due to Coronoavirus threat. The Asia/Oceania Group I matches were originally scheduled to be played from February 4-8.

"The event will be held in the week following the ATP Dubai tournament at the same venue, and will see six nations China P.R., Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Korea Rep. and Uzbekistan - compete for a place in the Fed Cup Play-offs in April," an ITF release said.

The six teams will vie for two spots in Fed Cup Play-offs.

"Being in Dubai makes no difference. But the dates give enough time to Sania for her recovery. Doubles is an important point. Ankita is playing well. The other team members will also get some tournament to play under their belt," India's Fed Cup captain Vishal Uppal told news agency.

Sania's participation was under doubt due to a calf injury she aggravated during the Australian Open, where she pulled out of the mixed doubles before retiring mid-way into her women's doubles opening round match.

"I think we have a good chance but we will have to be at our best and fight hard for every point, every game, every set, every match," Uppal added.

New Delhi, Jun 2: Manchester United's Paul Pogba on Monday paid tribute to George Floyd, stressing that violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated and they have to stop.

Pogba took to Instagram to write: "During the past few days I have thought a lot about how to express my feelings about what happened in Minneapolis. I felt anger, pity, hatred, indignation, pain, sadness."

"Sadness for George and for all black people who suffer from racism Every day! Whether in football, at work, at school, Anywhere! This has to stop, once and for all! Not tomorrow or the next day, it has to end today! Violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated," he added.

Protests erupted in Minneapolis and other US cities on Tuesday after Floyd, an African-American man, died following his arrest by the four officers.

A viral video showed a police officer, Derek Chauvin, pinning 46-year-old Floyd to the ground with his knee on his neck for nearly eight minutes. Floyd died at a local hospital shortly thereafter.

The four police officers were fired. Chauvin was also charged with murder and manslaughter, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.
