Sreesanth lands in controversy

Sreesanth

Temperamental pacer S. Sreesanth on Wednesday landed in a controversy when a co-passenger in a Bangalore-Delhi flight alleged him of "boorish behaviour" on board the aircraft.

The co-passenger, T R Ravichandran alleged that Sreesanth got into a "childish argument" with flight attendants when he was asked not to sit near the emergency exit. Ravichandran said other passengers, including himself, objected to Sreesanth's behaviour which led to delay in take-off of the flight.

However, Sreesanth denied the allegations and said he hardly had any conversation with the passenger and he knew how to behave in public.

"I am denying any abuse. I have never used any abusive language. I don't think I have used any abusive language in a flight. Secondly, I play for Indian team and I know the rules and how to behave publicly and personally. I try to set the standards," he said.

Ravichandran claimed that the incident took place in flight S2 4234 from Bangalore to Delhi.

"Sreesanth was alloted seat 29A which incidentally was close to the emergency exit. And as he was sporting an injury, flight attendants requested him to move, albeit temporarily, till take off to ensure that no one is inconvenienced in case of any emergency. Instead of letting the attendants do their job, he got into a childish argument thereby delaying the take off by 15 minutes," Ravichandran was quoted.

"Inspite of four people requesting, he kept insisting he would not move and that he was not injured, he is a sportsman etc. As a fellow passenger, I objected to his boorish behaviour," he added.

Denying the allegations, Sreesanth said, "I was with a friend and there were passengers next to me, I don't know why they are complaining. This incident, I am totally unaware of it. I hardly had any conversation with any one of them."

"In fact I was listening to music which I usually do. Using an abusive language in a public place, I will never do that. They said 29A was my seat because it was a full economy flight and I had to travel two and a half hours to Delhi," said Sreesanth.

"On a full economy flight, I asked for that seat so that I could stretch my leg and sit. The moment I came in, they said you can't sit here. That was the conversation I had. i said this is 29A and I deserve to sit here. My friend also said the same thing. That was the only conversation I had.

"The person said that I was not fit. I said I have not asked for a wheelchair. I was about to miss the flight and I ran into the flight," he said.

No stranger to controversies, Sreesanth was involved in the infamous slap-gate in a 2008 IPL match at Mohali where he was slapped by then fellow India teammate Harbhajan Singh after an altercation.

New Delhi, Jul 23: With one year to go for the Olympic Games to begin in Tokyo on July 23, 2021, Indian women's hockey team skipper Rani Rampal on Thursday said the side has performed well against top teams in recent times and can do the same at the Olympics.

The Indian team has competed well against top teams in the recent past and has registered memorable victories at the FIH Series Finals and the FIH Olympic Qualifiers last year.

"We have competed against top teams in the recent past and we have shown that our team has the capability of winning a medal and making our country proud at the Olympics. We have a good group of experienced players, who are guiding the junior players very well. Our team has been getting better with each tournament we have played and we will definitely improve our game even further in the next one year," said the 25-year-old said in a statement.

Speaking about her participation at the Olympics, Rani said that the experience will help her make better decisions at the Tokyo Olympics.

"It was great to be a part of the Olympics in Rio. We made history by qualifying for the tournament after 36 years. It was a great feeling to be playing at the biggest of stages. Even though we didn't register the best of results, I have certainly learned a lot by playing the Olympic Games matches in 2016. I am sure all the players, who played in the 2016 Olympics, will make much better decisions on the pitch at the Tokyo Olympics, based on their experience in Rio," she said.

The Tokyo Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021, while the Paralympics will take place from August 24 to September 5, 2021.

Apr 13: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir says if IPL is not played this year, it will be difficult for Mahendra Singh Dhoni to make a comeback to the Indian team.

Dhoni last played for India in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in July last year.

Since then he hasn't played any competitive cricket and legends such as Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev have already said that it's getting increasingly difficult for the Jharkhand dasher to make an international return after such a prolonged sabbatical.

He was expected to be seen in action at this year's IPL but the chances of T20 league being played are remote due to the COVID-19.

"If the IPL does not happen this year, then it will become very difficult for MS Dhoni to make a comeback. On what basis can he (Dhoni) be selected since he’s not been playing for the last one or one and a half year," Gambhir said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'.

The 38-year-old Gambhir picked KL Rahul, who has been keeping in ODIs, as an "apt replacement" for Dhoni.

"Obviously his (Rahul's) keeping is not as good as Dhoni’s, but if you are looking at T20 cricket, Rahul's a utility player, can keep and bat at No. 3 or 4. If the IPL does not happen, then Dhoni’s chances for a comeback look dim.

"Ultimately, you are representing India, so whoever dishes out the best performance and can win the match for India should play for the team," added Gambhir.

The southpaw also felt that retirement was Dhoni's personal decision.

"As far as his retirement plans go by, that's his personal choice," said Gambhir.

However, his former teammate and test specialist VVS Laxman feels that Dhoni can continue playing IPL.

"Not only this IPL, he (Dhoni) will probably play in the next couple of IPLs, and then we will take a call about his future as a cricketer," Laxman said on the same show.

However, Laxman, a veteran of 134 Tests, said that the new selection committee, chaired by former spinner Sunil Joshi, will have to discuss Dhoni's future with him.

"Dhoni will be very clear, as far as his plans are concerned, I'm sure he must have communicated that with (captain) Virat Kohli, (coach) Ravi Shastri immediately after the 2019 World Cup in England," said Laxman.

"The new selection committee will have to sit down with MS Dhoni and understand his future, as far as Indian cricket is concerned. But MS Dhoni will continue to play for CSK and do well for CSK," said Laxman, who amassed 8,781 Test runs.

However, Mohammad Azharuddin has refuted allegations and said: "I strongly rubbish the false FIR filed against me in Aurangabad. I am consulting my legal team and would be taking action as necessary."

Azharuddin's personal assistant Mujeeb lives in Augurangabad and has good relations with the travel agency of Shadab.

The travel agent alleged that Mujeeb asked him to book some flight tickets but did not pay the amount.
