Selectors to pick Team India for ODI tour of Sri Lanka on Wednesday

July 4, 2012

sri_lankan_tourThe long holiday is over and it's time for the Indian cricket team to get back to work. The first assignment coming up is a short trip to Sri Lanka towards the end of July, five one-dayers and a Twenty20, for which the selectors will pick a squad in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Leading batsman Sachin Tendulkar is holidaying and senior pacer Zaheer Khan is back to full fitness. Tendulkar's availability for this series and whether or not to give Zaheer an opportunity to warm up on this quiet tour should figure in the discussions among the wise men. Regardless of what the selectors decide, Zaheer himself should be looking forward to the trip.

In the absence of extreme media attention, because of the ongoing Wimbledon and the upcoming Olympics, it will be a good opportunity for the bowler to get back to match fitness. That should mean selectors picking him without much debate alongside Nagpur pacer Umesh Yadav, who had missed out on the Asia Cup in March this year but was in good form during the IPL that followed.

If Tendulkar chooses to rest, Mumbai batsman Ajinkya Rahane should certainly come on board. His performance this IPL season was extremely impressive and batting alongside Rahul Dravid for Rajasthan Royals did the youngster's confidence a world of good.

However, Rahane is unlikely to get his usual opener's slot. Gautam Gambhir, riding high on the IPL victory, will remain the first-choice opener along with Virender Sehwag who missed out on the Asia Cup and is most likely to make a return.

Both Sehwag and Gambhir were in extremely good form during the IPL which will mean Rahane having to settle for the No. 3 slot. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni make the middle order.

Manoj Tiwary may miss out because of Sehwag's return while his continuing lack of form is likely to keep Yusuf Pathan on the sidelines. Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja too has struggled but the option of a left-arm spinner that he brings to the table may coax selectors into picking him. If that happens, Jadeja will be the one responsible for keeping Irfan Pathan - also vying for the allrounder's slot - out of contention.

Among the other spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin - currently India's premier off-spinner, and Rahul Sharma whose leg-breaks can come in handy, fill the slots.

Two additional pacers - a choice between R Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Ashok Dinda - should settle the final squad of 15. Considering that India head to an international assignment after a rare lengthy patch, it is important for the selectors to keep the crux of the squad - that will consistently figure in the months to come - together. Therefore, unnecessary experiments are likely to be avoided.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.

Mar 2: Indian captain Virat Kohli was left frustrated and deflated as New Zealand won the second Test inside three days in Christchurch on Monday to sweep the series.

India started the day at 90 for six and were all out for 124, before New Zealand chased down the required 132 to win for the loss of three wickets in 36 overs.

It ended a disappointing tour for India and Kohli as New Zealand, who won the first Test by 10 wickets early on day four, wrapped up the series with ease.

New Zealand are now unbeaten in their last 13 home Tests, winning nine of them, and in the past decade their record as hosts is played 39, won 20, drawn 13 and lost five.

In the latest series, on traditional New Zealand green wickets, India managed scores of 165, 191, 242 and 124, reflecting the low contributions from Kohli of 2, 19, 3 and 14.

Kohli came to New Zealand as the world's top Test batsman and oozing charm as he described New Zealand as the “nice guys” of cricket.

But during the series he lost his top ranking to Australian Steve Smith and when Kane Williamson went for three in the first innings of the second Test the pressure showed when he gave the New Zealand skipper a very animated send-off.

There was further evidence of frustration when he was caught on camera yelling an obscenity at a group of New Zealand supporters on Sunday.

The end came quickly for India on day three as Tim Southee and Trent Boult tormented the batsmen with their variety of inswing and outswing deliveries targeting both sides of the stumps.

Hanuma Vihari was the first to fall, in Southee's second over, when he turned a legside delivery too fine and was caught by BJ Watling diving to his left.

Five balls later and with no addition to the score, India's other overnight batsman Rishabh Pant was caught behind off a Boult delivery that swung away.

Mohammed Shami was caught for five by Tom Blundell at deep mid-wicket and Jasprit Bumrah was run out when trying to give the strike to Ravindra Jadeja, who was unbeaten on 16.

Boult and Southee signed for most of the dismissals with Boult taking four for 28 and Southee three for 36. The swing pair accounted for 25 of the 40 Indian wickets in the series.

There was enough seam and swing available for India to keep the New Zealand batsmen guessing but Bumrah and Umesh Yadav were unable to apply consistent pressure and Mohammed Shami was troubled by a sore shoulder.

New Zealand coasted through a century opening stand by Tom Latham and Blundell before losing three quick wickets.

Latham notched his 18th half-century and second of the Test before he was caught behind off Yadav for 52, Kane Williamson had a short stay for five, and Blundell went for 55.
