India defeated Sri Lanka by 39 runs in the one-off T20 match here on Tuesday. Set to score 156 for a win, the host did not have a single decent partnership.

Sri Lanka’s opening pair was separated in the first over itself, with Irfan Pathan swinging the ball through the defence of Tillakaratne Dilshan (0).

Pathan, in fact, set the stage for India’s comeback, trapping Mahela Jayawardene (26) in front, and inducing a nick from Upul Tharanga (5).

He claimed three top-order wickets in his first three-over spell and the host never recovered after that.

Ashwin made matters worse for Sri Lanka when he bowled Lahiru Thirimanne (20), who attempted a reverse sweep, off the off-spinner's very first ball.

Earlier, India’s in-form batsman Virat Kohli (68), and Ajinkya Rahane (21) added 74 for the second wicket to steer the side to a respectable155 for three.

This was Kohli’s first half-century in this format. He also surpassed the highest score — 64 by Virender Sehwag at Mohali in 2009 — by an Indian against Sri Lanka in T20s.

Earlier, put in, India was off to an indifferent start, losing Gautam Gambhir (6) early to the debutant Shaminda Eranga.

Kohli and Rahane brought up 50 for the second wicket off just 34 deliveries. Rahane perished trying to increase the tempo, hitting a tossed up delivery back to bowler Jeevan Mendis.

Kohli, who was middling the ball, tried to clear a slower one from Eranga over mid-wicket but the ball just landed in the hands of Lahiru Thirimanne.

A full house watched the proceedings at the Pallekele Stadium.

New Delhi, Apr 24: India's World Cup-winning former opener Gautam Gambhir performed the last rites of his deceased domestic help after her mortal remains could not be sent to her home in Odisha due to the coronavirus-forced national lockdown.

Gambhir, also a BJP Lok Sabha MP, posted a tribute on his Twitter page for his employee Saraswati Patra, who was working at his residence for the past six years.

"Taking care of my little one can never be domestic help. She was family. Performing her last rites was my duty," he tweeted.

"Always believed in dignity irrespective of caste, creed, religion or social status. Only way to create a better society. That's my idea of India! Om Shanti," said the 38-year-old Gambhir, who played 58 Tests for India between 2004 and 2016.

Media reports in Odisha said the 49-year-old Patra hailed from a village in Jajpur district.

She was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital a few days ago and was battling diabetes and high blood pressure for a long period. She breathed her last while undergoing treatment on April 21.

Union Minister of Petroleum and Steel Dharmendra Pradhan appreciated Gambhir.

"Taking care of Saraswati throughout the course of her illness, he also ensured her dignity in death by performing her last rites himself since her mortal remains could not be sent to her family back home in Odisha," Pradhan, who also belongs to Odisha, tweeted.

"His act of compassion will enliven the faith in humanity for millions of poor, who are working far from their home for livelihood and will garner respect from all folds of the society."

London, Mar 19: Talking about the break in cricketing activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, South Africa pacer Dale Steyn said that the disease seems to be to the only topic of conversation these days.

"I don't know how to describe it. Doesn't matter where you go, everyone is talking about it - whether it is on an airplane or you are just popping into a grocery store. It just seems like it is the only topic of conversation," ESPN Cricinfo quoted Steyn as saying.

"Yeah, it's so strange. Normally if I am on holiday I'll be planning a fishing trip or a surfing trip. At the moment I am just chilling at home," he added.

Steyn was last seen in action in the Pakistan Super League where he took two wickets in two matches.

When asked whether he has enough hand sanitizers, he replied: "We just decided that stockpiling is definitely not the way to go. It is not fair on everybody who needs that stuff. I went to the grocery store the other day and everyone had bought all the toilet paper. We have what we need, and when that runs out, that runs out, and we need to go and get some more".

"We didn't feel it was necessary to go and absolutely just, like, zombie our lives up. There's other people that live on a day-to-day basis. They are not going to get all of that stuff, so we thought it was best not to do that".

Steyn also had a message for the fans, "Stay healthy, wash your hands, look after yourself, don't be greedy. Right now they are saying old people are really struggling, so if in a position to help, rather help them than help yourself. Pretty simple, really."

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the ODI series between India-South Africa and Australia-New Zealand have been postponed.

The start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has also been postponed until April 15.

Cricket South Africa has suspended all forms of cricket for 60 days while Cricket Australia has advised all its employees to work from home.
