New Delhi, August 11: Even as Indian Premier League, commissioner Rajeev Shukla hailed the comeback of Yuvraj Singh into the national side for the upcoming World Twenty20 championship in Sri Lanka, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed surprise at the batsman's inclusion in the team.

Yuvraj has not played competitive cricket since India's World Cup triumph in April last year after he was diagnosed with a rare germ cell cancer.

"I am a bit surprised. I just wish he physically stays well because you know he has come out of a...what can I say, a big disappointment. He has recovered, which is the best thing that can happen, but it has not been a long time and I wish and pray he sustains," an apprehensive Ganguly told reporters during the sidelines of a function.

The former skipper, however, welcomed the decision of selectors to pick offspinner Harbhajan Singh for the T20 competition.

"He is a class act. When you play for a long time you have hiccups. But I am happy that he has made a comeback," Ganguly said. Shukla while welcoming the decision of the selectors to consider Yuvraj for the World T20 said that his inclusion will be a big boost for the Indian players.

"It is a very courageous effort on part of Yuvraj Singh and everybody should welcome it. It would lift the morale of other players in the team," Shukla said. Offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his happiness over Yuvraj's inclusion into the team and expected the left-hander to announce his comeback with a big bang.

"What I am today is partly because of of Yuvi. The first time I broke into some kind of great cricket it was when yuvi was the captain of Challenger side and he actually encouraged me and motivated me a lot to move ahead in my career.

"I am very pleased that he is back and I will be very very happy if he comes back with a bang getting some runs for the team," Ashwin said. Ganguly, meanwhile, was disappointed with the selection of the Test squad and said the only criterion for making it to the team should be the form and nothing else.

The veteran cricketer in particular was the manner the selectors have retained the same team which received a 0-4 drubbing at the hands of Australia earlier this year.

"Looking at the Test team, I am a bit disappointed. My only point is that it is the same team which lost 4-0 to Australia. There has been no change, the only person missing is Rahul Dravid, who has retired. So you lost that series 4-0 and if you have to believe that everything is fine, I am not sure," the batsman said.

Asked about VVS Laxman's inclusion in the Test team, Ganguly said, "Selection has to on the basis of form, it should not be on the basis of age. And for someone like VVS Laxman what I feel is important is to have a clear picture."

"After playing so much it should not be one series, this series or the next series. It should be very clear with Laxman or any other Indian player like Dravid or (Sachin) Tendulkar, because they have been great players and it should not be like you are picked for this tour and you may not play the next, it should not be like that," Ganguly pointed.

The left-hander was also happy about Lakshmipathy Balaji's return to the national team.

"Balaji has done very well in IPL and he is a very-very good bowler. I am happy to see him. He had injury problems and I am happy to see him get back into the team. He is a quality bowler and I have seen that in Pakistan in 2003. He will be a handy bowler," he said.

Asked about Rohit Sharma's future, particularly in the longer format of the game, the 40-year-old said, "He has got time. If he gets his head right he will get his form back."

Aukland, Feb 5: Striker Navneet Kaur scored a brace to guide the Indian women's hockey team to a convincing 3-0 win over New Zealand in the last game of its five-match tour here on Wednesday.

Navneet found the net in the 45th and 58th minutes, while Sharmila scored a field goal in the 54th minute as India drew curtains on the New Zealand tour on a bright note.

After a goalless opening two quarters, Navneet finally broke the deadlock for India in the 45th minute.

Sharmila then doubled the lead when she struck a powerful shot past the New Zealand goalkeeper in the 54th minute. Navneet found the net again just two minutes from the final hooter with a beautiful field strike.

India began the tour by thrashing New Zealand Development squad 4-0 before suffering close 1-2 and 0-1 defeats to the home senior team.

In penultimate game of the tour, skipper Rani's lone strike handed India a 1-0 win over Great Britain.

"...I am happy we produced three goals against New Zealand in the last match. This tour gave us a good insight about where we need to improve and one of the things is to create faster play than we do now," said India's chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne.

Commenting on his side's performance during the tour, Marijne said, "Sometimes we tend to keep the ball too long on the stick and then we create pressure. We need to avoid that by passing faster.

"On the defence side, we need to be a bit more calmer and need to improve our tackling. We will have a four week camp after a short break when we return home and we will be working on these points."

The Indian team will return home on February 7.

Vitoria, Jul 20: Lionel Messi won a record seventh top scoring title in the Spanish league after netting twice in Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Alav s in the final round.

Messi ended with 25 goals, four more than Karim Benzema, who did not score in Real Madrid's 2-2 draw at Legan s.

Messi is the first player to finish as the league's top scorer in seven different seasons. He reached the milestone despite missing games because of an injury early in the season. The Argentine's 25 goals came in 33 matches.

Messi was tied with Telmo Zarra with six scoring titles. He has also now equaled Hugo Sanchez's feat of four straight top-scorer trophies.

"Individual achievements are always secondary," Messi said on Sunday.

"I wished it could have come along with the league title."

This is also the third successive season that Messi finished with the most assists 21 in the league.

Ansu Fati, Luis Su rez and Nelson Semedo also scored Sunday for Barcelona, which had already secured second place behind Madrid.

Fati opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Messi added to the lead 10 minutes later and Su rez closed the first-half scoring in the 44th. Semedo got on the board in the 57th and Messi in the 75th to help Barcelona rebound from a 2-1 home loss to Osasuna.

"Today things were different," Messi said.

"The team showed better attitude and commitment. It was an important step forward for us ahead of what's left in the season."

Barcelona now turns its focus to its Aug. 8 home game against Napoli in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The first leg, played before the break, ended 1-1.

Barcelona coach Quique Seti n finished under pressure after the team relinquished a two-point lead over Madrid when the league resumed following the pandemic break. It was four points back before Madrid's match at Legan s.

Barcelona defender Cl ment Lenglet had to be substituted early in the second half because of an apparent muscle injury.

Alav s, sitting in 15th, had already done enough to stay up.

BAR A "B" TEAM

American winger Konrad de la Fuente scored twice as Barcelona's "B" team beat Valladolid B to keep alive its hopes of reaching the second division next season. The victory put Barcelona in the second round of the promotion playoffs.

The 19-year-old De la Fuente, who recently had his contract with Barcelona extended through the 2021-22 season, scored in each half.
