Kohli nominated for two top ICC awards

Dubai, August 13: India's Virat Kohli, the leading run-scorer in ODIs in 2012, has earned nominations in two of the top three categories at the annual ICC cricket awards – the ICC and ODI Cricketer of the Year.


Leading the list of nominations at the ninth edition of the ICC awards are Saeed Ajmal, Hashim Amla, Alastair Cook, Michael Clarke and Kumar Sangakkara who have been nominated in each of the three top categories. The five players feature in the long-list of nominees for the ICC and ODI Cricketer of the Year, while West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor features in the first ICC’s Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year and Women’s T2oI Cricketer of the Year long-lists.

This is the first instance of the men’s and women’s voting academy being in operation and awards have also become fully integrated. Taylor has also become the first women’s cricketer to be long-listed for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, to be held on September 15 in Colombo ahead of the ICC World Twenty20.


The long-lists were put together by a five-man selection panel chaired by former West Indies captain and current chairman of the ICC cricket committee, Clive Lloyd. The other members of the panel were Marvan Atapattu, Carl Hooper, Tom Moody and Clare Connor. The players were selected based on their performances between August 4, 2011 and August 6, 2012.


Kohli, 23, has scored 1733 runs in 31 ODI innings at an average of 66.65 during the period considered for voting. In Tests during that same time, he scored 415 runs from five innings at 41.50.


This year’s awards include 11 individual prizes, including the People’s Choice Award that will be chosen by fans around the world online, and also feature the selection of the Test and ODI Teams of the Year. Five cricketers - Sangakkara, Sachin Tendulkar, Vernon Philander, Jacques Kallis and James Anderson - were selected by the ICC selection panel for the People’s Choice Award and released to the public for voting earlier this month.


In addition, this year sees the creation of the two women’s awards for which Taylor has been nominated.


The ICC CEO David Richardson said the awards presented "a wonderful opportunity for the ICC, along with thousands of cricket fans, to acknowledge and reward the brilliant performances of the world’s best cricketers".

New Delhi Jul 30: After Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal's ban was reduced to 18 months, Danish Kaneria criticised Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) policies and said that the 'zero tolerance policy' applies only to him.

"Zero Tolerance policy only apply on Danish Kaneria not on others, can anybody answer the reason why I get life ban not others, Are policy applies only on cast, colour, and powerful background. I am Hindu and proud of it that's my background and my dharma," Kaneria tweeted.

Earlier on Wednesday, Akmal's three-year suspension was reduced to 18 months by an independent adjudicator, former Pakistan Supreme Court judge, Faqir Mohammad Khokhar.

On April 27, the Chairman of the Disciplinary Panel, Justice (retd) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan, had banned the wicketkeeper-batsman for three years after finding him guilty of breaching the PCB's Anti-Corruption Code in two separate incidents.

Akmal, on May 19, filed an appeal against the three-year ban imposed on him, seeking a reduction in the duration of the sanction. He will remain suspended effectively from February 2020 till August 2021.

The batsman said he might appeal again to get the ban "reduced further".

"I am thankful to the judge for listening to my lawyers properly. I will decide about the remaining sentence and try to get it reduced further. For now I am not satisfied and will consult my lawyers and family how to take this ahead," ESPNcricinfo had quoted Akmal as saying.

"There are many players before me who made mistakes and just look at what they got and what I got. So all I say right now is thank you very much," he had added.

On the other hand, Kaneria was found guilty of spot-fixing while playing for English club Essex and was banned from the sport.

Earlier this month, Pakistan's cricket governing body 'advised' Kaneria to approach England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) if he wants to play domestic cricket after the cricketer had appealed to the PCB, seeking permission to play domestic cricket.

New Delhi, Feb 5: IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has denied any financial dealings with the controversial Rose Valley Group except for it being a sponsor of the side's official jerseys in 2012 and 2013.

KKR issued the clarification after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached Rose Valley's assets worth over Rs 70 crore on Monday. The attached assets include Rs 11.87 crore bank deposits of Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd, that owns KKR, in connection with a money laundering probe.

The franchise said it hopes for the matter to be resolved expeditiously.

"Rose Valley Hotels was one of KKR's IPL jersey sponsors for IPL seasons 2012 and 2013. Rose Valley had paid KKR an approx. amount of Rs 11.87 crore as sponsorship fees," KKR CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement.

"KKR had no other dealings with the Rose Valley Group including Rose Valley’s micro finance business," he added.

The statement added that in July last year, KRSPL (Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd), received a "witness summon" from the ED in connection with an investigation relating to the Rose Valley Group, particularly its micro finance business.

"The ED continues the investigation of Rose Valley. KKR continues to cooperate with the authorities in all respects," Mysore said.

"As part of the investigative process, sometime in October 2019, the ED placed a lien on the said amount earlier paid by Rose Valley to KKR," he asserted.

The directors of KRSPL include Shah Rukh Khan's wife Gauri Khan, actor Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta, Mysore and two others.

Mysore was questioned in this case by ED's Kolkata office in October last year.

Apart from KRSPL, the ED attached properties of two other entities -- Multiple Resorts Pvt. Ltd. and Kolkata's St Xavier's College on Monday.

The ED registered an FIR against the Rose Valley group, its chairman Gautam Kundu and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in 2014.

Kundu was arrested by the agency in Kolkata in 2015 and is in judicial custody at present.

The ED has filed multiple charge sheets in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar courts in this connection and total attachments are now worth Rs 4,750 crore.

The group has been charged by the ED and the CBI with "illegally and fraudulently collecting deposits from public with the intention to cheat them by falsely promising high returns on their investment", thereby perpetrating a ponzi-like fraud.
