Colombo, September 21: Minnows Afghanistan go into their World Twenty20 clash against reigning champions England on Friday night with their morale boosted by a pep talk from two former greats of the game.

India's Sunil Gavaskar and Aravinda de Silva of Sri Lanka spoke to the squad on Thursday evening after an invitation from Afghanistan's Pakistani coach Kabir Khan, media reports said.

"Cricket is a universal game and it feels good to interact with players," Gavaskar, the first batsman to score 10,000 Test runs, was quoted as saying.

Gavaskar spoke to the players in Hindi, which they understood, while de Silva's talk in English was translated into Pashto by Khan.

Afghanistan's wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad said the pep talk was a big boost for his team.

"It can't get better than having Gavaskar and Aravinda speak to us," Shahzad told the Kolkata-based Telegraph newspaper.

"They boosted our confidence before such an important match. Gavaskar said that our fielding had to improve. There were other suggestions as well.

"Both of them were so supportive. Our confidence can only soar. Going forward, we've got a massive boost," Shahzad said.

The Afghans, who until five years ago were playing in the lower division leagues, won hearts during a fearless display in their opening match against India on Wednesday.

The part-timers from the war-ravaged nation, many of whom took up cricket in refugee camps in Pakistan, gave India's multi-millionaires a scare before going down fighting by 23 runs.

Afghanistan's gritty display brought some respect to lower-ranked teams with Ireland being thrashed by Australia in their opening match and Zimbabwe already knocked out of the competition.

England's Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad, who watched Afganistan's game against India on television, said his team were not taking victory for granted.

"Whether you're playing against Afghanistan, or the best team in the world, your principles don't change," Broad told reporters on Thursday night.

"By the looks of it, they don't have any fear. They'll play a few shots.

"That is something we will have to counteract as a bowling unit, not get fazed by that, not panic too much."

Broad was reminded of England's shock defeats to the Netherlands at the 2009 World Twenty20 at Lord's and to Ireland at last year's 50-over World Cup in Bangalore.

"The shorter the game the more dangerous these teams are and Afghanistan are not going to hold back with the bat. It will be important we keep our cool."

England's second game will be against India in Colombo on Sunday, but victory against Afghanistan will ensure them a place in the Super Eights round.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.

Silverstone, Aug 2: Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton on Sunday won his seventh British Grand Prix title after a dramatic last-lap at the Silverstone Circuit.

Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas were at the first and second spot respectively until tyre drama struck.

Second-placed man Bottas was the first to suffer as his tyre deflated on lap 50, resulting in 11th place finish. Hamilton also suffered a similar issue before the final few seconds of the race.

However, with Max Verstappen having opted to pit a few laps from the end to try and claim the fastest lap, Hamilton had enough time in hand to just cross the line first, five seconds ahead of Verstappen and the third-placed Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz had been set to finish fourth, but his own last lap tyre issue saw him eventually come home P13, allowing Renault's Daniel Ricciardo to claim fourth, following a late pass on the sister McLaren of Lando Norris.

Renault's Esteban Ocon finished sixth, having enjoyed a race-long battle with Lance Stroll's Racing Point, with Pierre Gasly having enjoyed a fine race to finish seventh for AlphaTauri.

Alex Albon finished eighth for Red Bull, having recovered from a lap 1 tussle with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen that saw him fall to last, while Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top 10, Vettel holding off a late charge form the recovering Mercedes of Bottas.
