Big math ahead of big match for Dhoni's boys

Colombo, September 28: India will be playing against Australia in their first Super Eight game on Friday. The men in yellow want to redeem their pride after they were recently ranked below Ireland in this format.

The Indians will be worried about how to tackle the most dangerous opening pair in world cricket, Shane Watson and David Warner. They would also be concerned about how they will cope with a pace battery that comprises the likes of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, along with Watson himself.

All three are raring to dish out some 'chin music,' something which the Indians have never enjoyed 'listening to'. Dhoni will also need to devise a strategy to contain his Chennai Super Kings teammate Michael Hussey, who had scripted one of the great turnarounds in T20 cricket in the semifinal of the 2010 edition against Pakistan in St Lucia.

And it's not just the rivals that are giving Dhoni sleepless nights. He also has tricky selection issues to contend with. Does he have the guts to drop star batsman Virender Sehwag after 'resting' him in the final group game against England?

Does he dish out the same treatment to his most experienced bowler Zaheer Khan? Does he play five bowlers again and open with Irfan Pathan? Is it prudent to drop currently out-of-touch big guns like Sehwag and Zaheer against an opposition which might just bring out the best in them, and against whom experience and class is always an invaluable asset?

Dhoni may have the answers to all the above questions. But if the move to drop the seniors backfires, he will forever be haunted by the outcome and taunted by the critics. But the time has come for the great gambler to bite the bullet. It remains to be seen whether he goes for the jugular, or plays safe, and 'welcomes' back all the seniors in the XI. It would make the dressing room a happy place for sure! But would it be the team that he, in his heart of hearts, wants to play? Maybe not!

What will give Dhoni a lot of confidence is the fact that if the Aussies are talking about ruffling Indian feathers with pace, it is spin that could call the shots in these conditions, and here, India are richly stocked.

Columbo, Jan 28: The Sri Lanka Cricket Board on Monday announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women`s T20 World Cup, slated to commence from February 21. The board also announced five standby players for the ensuing tournament.

The squad members are -- Chamari Atapattu (captain), Harshitha Madavi (vice captain), Anushka Sanjeewani, Hansima Karunaratne, Shashikala Siriwardene, Nilakshi De Silva, Ama Kanchana, Kavisha Dilhari, Udeshika Probodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, Hasini Perera, Sathya Sandeepani, Umesha Thimashini, Sugandika Kumari, Dilani Manodara.

The standby players are -- Sachini Nisansala, Prasadani Weerakkody, Oshadi Ranasinghe, Tharika Sewwandi, Inoka Ranaweera.

Sri Lanka will take on New Zealand in their opening encounter on February 22.

New Delhi Jul 30: After Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal's ban was reduced to 18 months, Danish Kaneria criticised Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) policies and said that the 'zero tolerance policy' applies only to him.

"Zero Tolerance policy only apply on Danish Kaneria not on others, can anybody answer the reason why I get life ban not others, Are policy applies only on cast, colour, and powerful background. I am Hindu and proud of it that's my background and my dharma," Kaneria tweeted.

Earlier on Wednesday, Akmal's three-year suspension was reduced to 18 months by an independent adjudicator, former Pakistan Supreme Court judge, Faqir Mohammad Khokhar.

On April 27, the Chairman of the Disciplinary Panel, Justice (retd) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan, had banned the wicketkeeper-batsman for three years after finding him guilty of breaching the PCB's Anti-Corruption Code in two separate incidents.

Akmal, on May 19, filed an appeal against the three-year ban imposed on him, seeking a reduction in the duration of the sanction. He will remain suspended effectively from February 2020 till August 2021.

The batsman said he might appeal again to get the ban "reduced further".

"I am thankful to the judge for listening to my lawyers properly. I will decide about the remaining sentence and try to get it reduced further. For now I am not satisfied and will consult my lawyers and family how to take this ahead," ESPNcricinfo had quoted Akmal as saying.

"There are many players before me who made mistakes and just look at what they got and what I got. So all I say right now is thank you very much," he had added.

On the other hand, Kaneria was found guilty of spot-fixing while playing for English club Essex and was banned from the sport.

Earlier this month, Pakistan's cricket governing body 'advised' Kaneria to approach England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) if he wants to play domestic cricket after the cricketer had appealed to the PCB, seeking permission to play domestic cricket.

Dhaka, Apr 22: Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has decided to auction the bat he used during the 2019 ODI World Cup to help raise money for the fight against deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Shakib, who is currently serving a two-year ban from all forms of cricket -- one of which is suspended -- for not reporting corrupt approaches, is the second Bangladeshi cricketer after wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim to auction a personal cricketing gear to raise money for the cause.

"I had said before that I want to put up a bat for auction. I have decided to auction the bat I used in the 2019 World Cup. It's a favourite bat of mine," Shakib said during a Facebook live session.

The 33-year-old all-rounder had a hugely successful World Cup in England last year, scoring 606 runs in eight matches at an average of 86.57, which included two centuries and five fifties.

Besides, he also picked up 11 wickets in the tournament and became the only cricketer to score 600 plus runs and scalp 10 wickets in a single edition of the World Cup.

"I had a good World cup with the bat and ball. There were some good performances especially with the bat. I had used a single bat throughout the World Cup and even used tapes on it to get through games," Shakib said.

"It's not that this bat has only been used at the World Cup. I have scored over 1500 runs with this bat and had used it prior to the tournament and after it as well.

"Although I like the bat a lot but I have decided to put it up for auction with the thought that maybe it can leave some contribution to forming a fund during the ongoing coronavirus crisis."

The money raised from the auction will go to the Shakib Al Hasan foundation.

"This is a very special bat to me, but my people are even more special to me," Shakib said.
