Former team-mates throw weight behind Mohinder Amarnath

New Delhi, September 28: The removal of former India batsman Mohinder Amarnath from the national selection committee on Thursday has met with widespread disapproval by his former team-mates.

Speaking to Cricketnext, Amarnath’s 1983 World Cup-winning team-mate Madan Lal termed as "unfortunate" the BCCI’s decision to remove him as North Zone selector. "The news of Amarnath's ouster came as a shock to me. He was a great cricketer and a wonderful human being. He's a very forthright and fair man who possesses profound passion and understanding of the game. But sadly not many people appreciate candid people," said Madan Lal.

"I played 39 Test matches for India and served Delhi cricket for 20 years but the DDCA doesn't give a damn about me. I firmly believe that Amarnath should have completed his four-year term given him stature and transparency but I don't know on what grounds he has been turfed out. I feel sorry for him."

Former Bihar and Delhi batsman Hari Gidwani, who played alongside Amarnath in Delhi, was also puzzled by the BCCI’s decision. "I'm oblivious of reasons which led to Jimmy's ouster but having played with him for so long I could say that he was a composed and very likable fellow," he told Cricketnext. "He's the most gutsy cricketer I've seen in my life. I feel that given his stature, he should have been retained in the selection panel."

On Twitter, Amarnath's former India and Delhi captain Bishan Singh Bedi also expressed his sentiments about the issue. "Rubber stamp still prominent in Ind selection commtt-how else would U describe the ouster of Jimmy Amarnath-man of impeccable crkt stature. When'll BCCI rid itself zonal bias in selection process?primitive to think 60laks would make 'em responsible but not accountable-rabid thot!" he tweeted.

"Wish you all a very happy #RepublicDay2020 from here in New Zealand," Irfan Pathan tweeted.

Boxer Vijender Singh said India is blessed with different religions, societies, cultures and languages.

"INDIA is a nation where humanity has lived since ages.It is a country which is blessed with different religions,societies,cultures & languages all interplaying with each other in harmony. PROUD OF UNITY IN DIVERSITY #RepublicDayIndia #RepublicDay2020," Singh wrote on the micro-blogging site.

Former cricketer Virender Sehwag, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, wrestler Sushil Kumar and tennis player Sania Mirza also extended their greetings on the occasion.

On this day, 70 years back, India officially adopted its Constitution. Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro is the chief guest at the parade this year.

Karachi, Jan 10: Former Pakistan batsman and current U-19 head coach Ejaz Ahmed feels that his side can beat defending champions and arch-rivals India in the forthcoming ICC Youth World Cup beginning in South Africa on January 17.

"India has a very good cricket system and it is organized but I know that we have more passion than them when we play against each other and that is how we also beat them in the semi-finals of the recent Asian Emerging Nations Cup," Ejaz said.

Ejaz, who has played 60 Test and 250 ODIs, was head coach of the Pakistan Emerging side which beat India before eventually winning the title in Bangladesh last year.

"Even in the past, we beat India because of our greater passion and this time also I know the passion of our players will prevail over them although they have a very strong outfit," he added.

The 51-year-old Ejaz, however, said at the end of the day it would be all about how a team plays on that particular day.

"It is the same in the World Cup it does not matter which team is number one or defending champions what will matter is how a team plays on a given day. I personally feel our team is well balanced," he said.

Ejaz did not believe that India would get advantage of having played a four-nation tournament with South Africa, New Zealand and Zimbabwe in South Africa before the World Cup.

"Our players have also trained hard in Lahore and we have played around 11 matches. We will also reach South Africa nine days before the World Cup and we have some practice games and I think our preparations are also very good for the tournament," he said.

The former batsman also said the absence of fast bowler Naseem Shah will not impact much on the team's performance. Naseem was withdrawn from the Pakistan U-19 squad after he played for the senior team in three Test matches against Australia and Sri Lanka.

"Look there was no controversy at all. The way we now see things is that you can't expect a MBA to go and take BA exams. That is how we look at Naseem Shah, he has made the grade for Pakistan and now he should be performing for the senior team," said the head coach.

"We have a couple of exciting young talent in the ranks. I expect Rohail and Haider to play for the senior team in two to three year's time, they are that good."

Bengaluru, Aug 1: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are aiming to set up their preparatory camp for the 13th edition of the tournament from early August.

This year's IPL was slated to commence from March 29 but the tournament was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Recently, the IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel had confirmed that the 13th edition of the mega event will commence on September 19 in the UAE.

As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, CSK players have been asked to report to Chennai first, following which they will leave for Dubai via a charter flight only after approval from the Indian government.

The IPL Governing Council will meet on August 2 to finalise the schedule and other key arrangements for the tournament. Also, the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) around securing eight teams for 51 days across three venues will be formally established in that meeting.

CSK, who has the oldest squad in the IPL, are looking for a month's preparation before ahead of the tournament.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the side was the first team to start their training camp in March. Senior players like Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu had begun training their training in December 2019.
