New Delhi, October 29: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition against India's veteran cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's nomination to Rajya Sabha, pending in various High Courts.

The Supreme Court questioned the bona fide of the petitioner Ram Gopal Singh Sisodia and told him, "What is your interest? you want to bring everything under the jurisdiction of this court?"

Petitions challenging Sachin's nomination to Rajya Sabha are pending before Allahabad High Court and Delhi High Court.

The former Delhi MLA had moved the Supreme Court on October 1st seeking transfer to itself two petitions pending with the Delhi and the Allahabad high courts and challenging the nomination of batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar to the Rajya Sabha.

Sisodia made the transfer plea, invoking Article 139 of the Constitution which empowers the apex court to transfer to itself any case pending before a high court either on its own or on a plea made by the Attorney General of India or by a party to any such case that such questions are substantial questions of general importance.

Sisodia sought the transfer of two anti-Sachin petitions from the two high courts to the apex court arguing that "there is likelihood that there may be contradictory judgements by the two high courts, while the points involved in them are of substantial public importance and the facts and submissions set out in both the petitions are similar."

"It would be in the interest of things that both the writ petitions are transferred before this (apex) court and final interpretation is given to the provisions of article 80 of the Constitution of India," said Sisodia's petition.

Sisodia, had challenged earlier before the Delhi High Court, Sachin's nomination on the ground that he does not have any of the qualifications prescribed under Article 80 of the Constitution for being nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

He had contended that Constitution allowed the government to select from only four categories - arts, science, social science and literature. The selection of a sports person was unconstitutional, he had said.

While refusing to restrain Sachin Tendulkar from taking oath as Rajya Sabha member, a division bench of the Delhi High Court on May 16 had asked Additional Solicitor General A S Chandhiok to get instructions from the government as to whether the sports category was covered under the Constitution while nominating a sports person to the Rajya Sabha Chandhiok had argued that the power has been exercised by the President of India and the court cannot interfere with it.

Earlier on May 14, the Supreme Court had refused to quash 39-year-old batting maestro's nomination to the Upper House and had asked Sisodia to rather approach the high court with his plea.

In his petition, the former Delhi MLA had raised several questions, including whether a person can be nominated as a Rajya Sabha member under clause 1(a) read with clause (3) of Article 80 of the Constitution even if he does not have special knowledge or practical experience as enumerated.

It was also submitted that "Tax payers money cannot go into the pockets of those who are not eligible to be nominated as members of the Rajya Sabha. The petitioner is an income-tax payee and the money contributed by citizens must be spent for constitutional purposes only."

New Delhi, Apr 28: West Indies flamboyant batsman Chris Gayle has lashed out at former teammate Ramnaresh Sarwan calling him 'worse than coronavirus'.

Gayle, the colossal figure in the shortest format of the game blamed Sarwan for his departure from Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Jamaica Tallawahs.

The left-handed batsman joined St Lucia Zouks as their marquee player for the 2020 CPL season after Tallawahs chose not to retain him.

Gayle has played for Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the past. He has won the CPL title twice with the Tallawahs and played in the final with the Patriots in 2017.

"The owner of the franchise is a very nice man, I have no problem with him. I think he was actually persuaded to get rid of Chris Gayle," Gayle said in three parts on his YouTube channel.

"So someone has to be in his years telling him to get rid of Gayle. Sarwan, you are worse than the coronavirus right now. What transpired with the Tallahwahs, you had a big part to play.

Sarwan, you are a snake. You know, you are not the most loved person in the Caribbean. You are still stabbing people in the back," he added.

Gayle is the leading T20 run-scorer of all time as well as the man with the most centuries in the format. He is also the leading CPL run-scorer of all time, having amassed 2,344 runs in the tournament.

Mar 16: With COVID-19 outbreak killing over 5,400 people globally, former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has lashed out at those responsible for making the coronavirus infect humans and blamed China solely for the outbreak.

"I don't understand why you have to eat things like bats, drink their blood and urine and spread some virus across the globe...I'm talking about the Chinese people. They have put the world at stake. I really don't understand how you can eat bats, dogs, and cats. I'm really angry," Akhtar said in a video posted on his Youtube channel.

"The whole world is at risk now. The tourism industry has been hit, the economy is badly affected and the whole world is going towards a lockdown.

"I'm not against the people of China but I'm against the law of animals. I understand this may be your culture but this is not benefitting you now, it is killing humanity. I'm not saying you boycott the Chinese but there has to be some law. You cannot go on and eat anything and everything," he added.

Coronavirus, which originated in China's Wuhan city, has so far spread to more than 100 countries, infecting over 1,30,000 people.

In Pakistan, the number of positive cases reached 28 on Saturday.

Many sporting events, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL), have been affected by the disease which has now been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

While the IPL 2020, which was originally scheduled to start from March 29, has been postponed till April 15, the playoff stage of PSL has been curtailed and will be played behind closed doors.

"The biggest reason for anger is PSL...Cricket returned to Pakistan after so many years, the PSL was happening in our country for the first time now even that is at risk. The foreign players are leaving, it will take place behind closed doors," said Akhtar.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases across India has crossed 80 while two people have lost their lives due to the deadly disease. But Akhtar did not have the information and added: "God forbid the virus doesn't reach India. There are around 130 crore people there. I've been in touch with my friends in India and wishing them well."

In PSL, there will be no playoffs and the top four teams will now play semi-finals and then the final on March 17 and 18. The final was originally scheduled to be held on March 22.

"I've also heard that IPL has been postponed till April 15. The hotel industries, travel industries, broadcasters everything will incur losses because of this," he said.

The former Pakistan pacer also called on the world authorities to come out with a new animal protection law so that such diseases don't resurface in the future.
