Alastair Cook's ton, stand with Prior give England hope in first Test

Ahmedabad, November 19: Despite Umesh Yadav's two wickets in two balls and Pragyan Ojha's two wickets in a span of two overs, India couldn't press home the advantage, what with one Mr. Alastair Cook standing between the hosts and victory on Day 4 of the first Test.

England skipper Cook (batting on 168) and Matt Prior (batting on 84) taught their teammates a lesson in application as England finished the day at 340/5 - a lead of 10 runs - with Cook still at the crease after a marathon 505-minute vigil in which he faced 341 balls.

Cook's hundred was his third against India and the 21st of his career. He also became the only cricketer to score three hundreds in his first three Tests as skipper. His other two hundreds came against Bangladesh in Chittagong and Mirpur.

Cook also put on 141 runs in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand with Prior, who has faced 190 balls so far and hit 10 fours, to help England sail towards respectability. India are still in a dominant position, though, setting up a tantalizing final day's play.

Cook and Prior's innings restored England's belief in their ability to handle India's spinners on turning tracks after the debacle in the first innings. No wonder batting coach Graham Gooch, who himself saw enough of India's spinners during his playing days, was all praise for Cook's efforts.

"This lad has had a great temperament from when he first started and made his debut here. He proved even then the priceless skill of knowing how to play in different situations.

From the outset he knew what he could do and what he couldn't do and he still has that skill today. He crafted a century today. It wasn't a flamboyant innings, he did the job that was necessary," said Gooch.

But before Cook and Prior took over, there were some tense moments in the English camp soon after play started on Sunday. Nick Compton tried his best to discipline himself but was lucky to survive a leg-before appeal and a sure-shot stumping in R Ashwin's second and third over of the day.

Aleem Dar turned down what looked like an easy chance when Compton was wrapped on the pad after playing slightly forward to one that was pitched outside off and turning just a bit. Then MS Dhoni failed to collect one that kept a little low than expected when Compton stepped out.

Compton was uncomfortable against spin and he also looked uncomfortable against Zaheer Khan's seam-up stuff. Zaheer was troubling him coming round the wicket and got one to come in with the angle to trap Compton in front and get the first breakthrough.

Ojha then got into the act, bowling a beauty to Jonathan Trott, who could only push his bat out and manage a faint edge. Then it was the turn of Pietersen, who is fast turning into Ojha's dummy.

For the second time in two days, KP was bowled around his legs, this time attempting a costly sweep to an overpitched delivery.

Jeddah, Jan 9: Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde criticised the new Supercopa format and said that "football has become a business and as a business it looks for income".

"The bottom line is football has become a business and as a business it looks for income. That's the reason we are all here," Goal.com quoted Valverde as saying ahead of Barca's semi-final against Atletico.

"It's a completely different format to what we're used to. It was always the first title and the opener of the season and to me, that seemed fine," he added.

The Supercopa was traditionally a two-legged affair played between the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey at the beginning of the season, but following last term's one-off meeting between Barca and Sevilla in Tangier, Morocco, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) went ahead with a full revamp.

Instead of just two teams being involved, the Supercopa has been expanded to also include the runners-up from La Liga and the Copa - meaning Barca and Valencia are joined by Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. It is also set to be hosted in Saudi Arabia for the next three editions.

"It's been changed and let's see, it will be judged once it has happened. It's interesting, with four good teams, but from a sporting point of view, I'm not sure," Valverde said.

"We must bear in mind that the football we are involved in is an industry, sources of income are sought and in the same way that there are special connotations in this country, there are also in Morocco, where we played last year," he added.

Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid in the semifinal of the Supercopa at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on January 10.

Jan 30: Three days after Los Angeles basketball great Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others perished in a helicopter crash, his wife, Vanessa, broke her silence with an Instagram message saying she was “completely devastated” by their loss.

The social media text was posted alongside a recent family photo of Kobe and Vanessa Bryant with all four of their daughters - Gianna, who died with her father, along with the couple’s eldest, Natalia, 17, 3-year-old Bianka, and the youngest, Capri, born in June 2019.

Kobe Bryant and the couple’s second daughter, knicknamed Gigi, died on Sunday when the helicopter they were flying in en route to the Mamba Sports Academy for a girl’s basketball tournament crashed in foggy weather on a hillside northwest of Los Angeles.

Gianna Bryant was a member of the Mamba team due to compete that day. Her father, who retired from the National Basketball Association in 2016 after 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers, was the coach of his daughter’s team. ]

The pilot and six more passengers were also killed - two other 13-year-old girls involved in the tournament, three of their parents and another coach. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The death of Bryant, 41, an 18-time NBA all-star, five-time Lakers champion and one of the world’s most admired sports figures, unleashed an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans, fellow athletes and politicians around the globe.

“My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time,” Vanessa Bryant, 37, a former model, wrote on her Instagram account.

“We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri,” she added.

The message goes on to say: “We are also devastated for the families who lost their loved ones on Sunday, and we share in their grief intimately. There aren’t enough words to describe our pain right now.

“I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved. We were so incredibly blessed to have them in our lives. I wish they were here with us forever. They were our beautiful blessings taken from us too soon.”

She directed anyone wishing to “further Kobe and Gianna’s legacy in youth sports” to visit the site MambaSports Foundation.org.

There has been no word yet on funeral arrangements.
