There's only heartbreak for India's 100-Test veterans

Mumbai, November 24: If Virender Sehwag thought he could join the likes of Colin Cowdrey, Javed Miandad, Gordon Greenidge, Alec Stewart, Inzamam-ul Haq, Ricky Ponting and Graeme Smith to become the eighth man in history to score a hundred in his 100th Test, he was mistaken.

Viru was only following the norm: No other Indian batsman who has playing his 100th Test has managed to get to three figures.

Monty Panesar, the man who got him out, earned that name because he could get the ball to spin and bounce like a python, following which his teammates christened him 'Monty Python'.

Sehwag appeared clueless against a full length delivery that turned from outside leg-stump and was bowled while playing across the line for 30. Like other Indian batsmen in their 100th Test, he too endured heartbreak.

India's 100 Test veterans have generally seen other batsmen get to three figures on their special occasion. Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian to get there against Pakistan at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium in 1984 and he made 48 and 37. Zaheer Abbas (168) and Mohinder Amarnath (101) scored hundreds in the drawn game.

Dilip Vengsarkar was capped for the 100th time on his home ground at the Wankhede against New Zealand on a dustbowl and India suffered an embarrassing defeat with the skipper managing scores of 25 and a blob.

Krish Srikkanth was the closest anyone got to scoring a hundred as the dashing opener made 94. While Kapil Dev reached the coveted mark in Karachi, we won't analyse his 100thTest effort as he qualifies more as an all rounder.

What about Sachin Tendulkar, though? The master got to the mark at the Oval in 2002 and he looked good for a three-figure score, but his efforts were cut short at 54 as he fell LBW to Andrew Caddick. The players he saw making tons in that high-scoring draw were Michael Vaughan (195) and Rahul Dravid (217).

Dravid, like Vengsarkar, reached the 100-Test mark at the Wankhede and like the former skipper and chief selector, he was the captain of a side that lost badly. Dravid's contribution in that Test against England was 52 and 9. Andrew Strauss (128) was the gate-crasher of the Wall's party.

Barring VVS Laxman, who featured in a win over Australia, in Nagpur, in 2008, none of the batsmen playing in the 100th Test have tasted victory.

In fact, Laxman's 64 in the first innings of that Test, is the highest score by an Indian batsman playing in his 100th Test. His 100th Test saw tons from Sachin Tendulkar (109) and Simon Katich (102).

Sehwag, playing in his 100th Test has already seen Cheteshwar Pujara reach three figures from the comfort of the dressing room when he would have preferred to do the same in the heat and dust in the middle. He has a chance to do that in the second innings, though. Can Viru break the jinx?

Mumbai, Jan 26: Boxing great Mary Kom has been selected for the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian award. Olympic silver medallist and reigning badminton World Champion PV Sindhu has been named for Padma Bhushan as the names of Padma awardees were disclosed on Saturday on the eve of the 71st Republic Day.

Rated as one of the most successful amateur boxers of all time, Mary Kom won bronze at the 2012 London Olympics and has won gold at the boxing World Championships for a record six times. She has won a total of eight medals at the World Championships, the most recent of which came in October 2019 in Ulan Ude, Russia. The 36-year-old is now looking to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Sindhu became the only Indian woman to win an Olympic silver when she reached the final of the women's singles event at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazi. In August last year, the 24-year-old became the first Indian to win gold at the badminton World Championships.

She has also won two silver and two bronze medals at the World's in the past, thus making her only the second woman after Chinese two-time Olympic gold medallist Zhang Ning to win five medals in the competition.

Indian women's hockey captain Rani Rampal, who has been the face of women's hockey in the country and played a pivotal role in the team qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is among those who have been nominated for the Padma Shri award.

Women's football stalwart Oinam Bembem Devi, former cricketer Zaheer Khan, shooter Jitu Rai, former hockey captain and coach M.P. Ganesh and archer Tarundeep Rai are the other sportspersons to be selected for the Padma Shri award.

New Delhi, Jun 18: Premier Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has described Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a "massive influence" on his career, revealing that at the beginning of his IPL stint, he was driven by an intense desire to get the former captain's attention.

Ashwin got his contract with CSK, one of the most successful IPL sides, in 2008 and said the stint with CSK shaped his career.

"IPL and CSK is a stage that everyone wants. For me it was more about recognition. MSD did not know who Ashwin is, (Matthew) Hayden and (Muttiah) Muralithan did not know who Ashwin is. The first thing that came to my mind was that 'I will show these people that Ashwin is here'," Ashwin told Harsha Bhogle on 'Cricbuzz in Conversation'.

"I don't know it was being foolish or arrogance but that was how I was made. Nobody was giving me a chance that Ashwin will play alongside Muralitharan or ahead of Muralitharan. I thought, I will get there ahead of him one day," he added.

Ashwin said Dhoni, who led CSK, had "massive influence" on him and the only way to impress him was by troubling him in the nets.

"I got the eye of Hayden, Jacob Oram, and Stephen Fleming while bowling to them at the nets. They were finding it difficult to face me in the first year (2008) but I had not caught the eye of MSD," he said.

"I never had massive interactions with him. It was going to the nets and getting MSD...he was hitting Muralitharan out of the park and I thought, if I bowl better than him, I met get to play ahead of Murali.

" I got his attention when I got him during a Challenger trophy and celebrated like a crazy kid," he recalled.

After that, Ashwin said during CSK's match against Victoria Bushrangers in the now defunct Champions League, he volunteered to bowl the Super Over and Dhoni gave him the ball without hesitation.

Ashwin did not fare well and ended up conceding 23 runs. The off-spinner said when Dhoni walked past him after the match, he only said that, "you should have bowled the carrom ball."

"MS always maintained that you are exceptionally skilful and you should keep doing what you do."

Ashwin has been very successful against the left-handers as 189 of his 365 wickets are of southpaws. Ashwin credited his engineering background and advice from Duncan Fletcher for the success.

"He made a statement that changed cricket. He said it's all about geometry and left it at that. Understanding angles (engineering background) has given me edge over others," he said.

London, Mar 19: Talking about the break in cricketing activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, South Africa pacer Dale Steyn said that the disease seems to be to the only topic of conversation these days.

"I don't know how to describe it. Doesn't matter where you go, everyone is talking about it - whether it is on an airplane or you are just popping into a grocery store. It just seems like it is the only topic of conversation," ESPN Cricinfo quoted Steyn as saying.

"Yeah, it's so strange. Normally if I am on holiday I'll be planning a fishing trip or a surfing trip. At the moment I am just chilling at home," he added.

Steyn was last seen in action in the Pakistan Super League where he took two wickets in two matches.

When asked whether he has enough hand sanitizers, he replied: "We just decided that stockpiling is definitely not the way to go. It is not fair on everybody who needs that stuff. I went to the grocery store the other day and everyone had bought all the toilet paper. We have what we need, and when that runs out, that runs out, and we need to go and get some more".

"We didn't feel it was necessary to go and absolutely just, like, zombie our lives up. There's other people that live on a day-to-day basis. They are not going to get all of that stuff, so we thought it was best not to do that".

Steyn also had a message for the fans, "Stay healthy, wash your hands, look after yourself, don't be greedy. Right now they are saying old people are really struggling, so if in a position to help, rather help them than help yourself. Pretty simple, really."

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the ODI series between India-South Africa and Australia-New Zealand have been postponed.

The start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has also been postponed until April 15.

Cricket South Africa has suspended all forms of cricket for 60 days while Cricket Australia has advised all its employees to work from home.
