BCCI brass backs troubled Sachin Tendulkar to bounce back

New Delhi, November 29: The Indian cricket board (BCCI) said on Wednesday that it would stand by the under-pressure Sachin Tendulkar, whose poor form and possible retirement have become a topic of hot debate after India's humiliation by England in the Mumbai Test.

Some BCCI sources had initially indicated that the board would take a call on Tendulkar if he failed in both the upcoming Tests against England, in Kolkata and Nagpur.

However, a top BCCI official told TOI that the board is not reading too much into Tendulkar's recent string of failures.

When asked what the board's stand would be if Tendulkar fails in both the Tests, the official said he was convinced "Sachin will come good" in the Kolkata Test staring on December 5.

"Tendulkar is a champion cricketer and there is no question of not supporting him when he going through a rough patch," the official told TOI. "He has always delivered when his detractors have ruled him out," he added.

Tendulkar himself chose to stay away from the controversy, but his close friends told TOI that the batting great had rebuffed reports that he has told chief selector Sandip Patil that the selectors could drop him if they felt he was not making runs and letting the team down.

"It was but obvious to ask him about what TV and newspapers were saying. Sachin simply smiled and said, 'It's untrue. I have never done such a thing (speak to selectors), so why would I do it now. My job is to try and give my best on the cricket field and that's what I intend to do'. I would always believe what he says rather than what the media says," a former teammate of Tendulkar, who met him on Wednesday afternoon, told TOI.

When BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale, who is also the convenor of the selection committee, was asked to comment on media reports about Tendulkar's conversation with Patil, he simply said: "I am not aware of it."

Tendulkar's close friends insisted that the batsman is unfazed by all the criticism surrounding him despite going this bad patch. However, some BCCI officials conceded that the champion is under pressure.

"Tendulkar is under tremendous pressure and he knows that he has to score to survive at this level because there are others waiting in the wings," said an official.

The good news for Tendulkar is that Team India is with him, all the way. His teammates' logic is simple: The Mumbai defeat at the hands of the England was not because of Tendulkar alone.

"The entire batting unit failed to deliver. Singling out Tendulkar is not right. It is unfair," a player who did not wish to be named said. The player added that the senior players have taken full responsibility for not scoring 400-plus runs in home conditions in the team meeting.

Another player said that Mumbai was a "terrible loss" but there was a lot of cricket still to be played in the series. "There is no crisis as such and the team is now focusing on putting enough runs on the board in Kolkata. We won't let one defeat pull us down."

Meanwhile, BCCI defended the selectors' decision of not changing the team after the Mumbai thrashing. "Chop and change is not the way out after losing a Test match. This team is going through a transition. Two top cricketers like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have retired from Tests this year but this team will surely turn it around. We can't have knee-jerk reactions to everything," a board official said.

Colombo, Aug 1: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has expressed his interest in playing the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), scheduled to start from August 28.

Pathan is among 70 foreign players to have shown interest in playing the LPL, ESPNcricinfo reported.

It is believed that Pathan has taken permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take part in the competition.

BCCI doesn't allow active players to participate in other T20 leagues but Pathan announced his retirement in January this year.

Former swashbuckling all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also played in a foreign league last year. He played for Maratha Arabians in the T10 League in Abu Dhabi.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Pathan will now be put in a player draft unless one of the five franchises choose him to be a marquee player. The details of the draft, and the franchise owners, are yet to be finalised and announced.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is also waiting on some government clearances even as it decides on franchise owners. The five franchises will represent Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna.

On Monday, SLC Executive Committee granted approval for the tournament.

"The 23 match League will be played on the four international venues of R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium. Five teams named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will participate in the League," SLC said in a statement on Monday.

Sri Lanka has controlled the spread of COVID-19 better than many other cricket-playing nations.

Kolkata, Jul 16: BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday went into home quarantine after his elder brother and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Snehasish Ganguly tested positive for Covid-19.

Snehasish, a former Bengal first-class player, has been admitted to the Belle Vue hospital in Kolkata after his COVID report came positive.

"He was suffering from fever for the last few days and his test report came positive today. He's been admitted to Belle Vue Hospital," a CAB official said.

"The reports arrived late in the evening. As per health protocols, even Sourav will have to be in home quarantine for a stipulated period," a source close to the BCCI President added.

Snehasish had shifted to their ancestral house, where Sourav is based, in Behala after his wife and in-laws at his Mominpur residence tested positive for the dreaded virus.

The former India captain was, however, unavailable for a comment on the development.

Recently, during an interview to India Today, Sourav had spoken about how life around him has changed, making people more vulnerable.

"My brother visits our factories everyday and he is more at risk," the former batting star had said

Hamilton, Feb 5: Talented Shreyas Iyer hit his maiden century while KL Rahul and skipper Virat Kohli carried on their fine form as India dished out a clinical batting effort to post 347 for four against New Zealand in the first ODI here on Wednesday.

Iyer showed why he is considered as the next big thing in Indian cricket, scoring 103 off 107 balls, his first ODI ton. Besides, Rahul continued his purple patch, smashing unbeaten 88 off 64 balls while Kohli made 51 off 63 deliveries.

Iyer's knock was laced with 11 fours and a six and together with Rahul shared 136 runs for the fourth wicket as India scored 96 runs in the last 10 overs after being sent into bat.

This was after Tom Blundell featured his maiden ODI for the Black Caps, while India gave debuts to two openers -- Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal.

It was the fourth such instance in Indian history with Rahul-Karun Nair being the last such pair in 2016 against Zimbabwe.

Shaw and Agarwal got the innings off to quick start, adding 50 off 48 balls for the opening stand.

But both Shaw and Agarwal fell in the space of five balls as India were reduced to 54 for 2.

Shaw was the first to go, nicking behind a Colin de Grandhomme (1/41) delivery, while Agarwal was caught at point by Blundell off Southee (2/85).

It brought Kohli and Iyer together, and they dominated the middle overs with a 102-run stand for the third wicket. They manoeuvred the field well and kept the scorecard ticking as India crossed 150 in the 28th over.

Kohli fell against the run of play as a wrong one from Ish Sodhi (1/27) got through his defence to clip the leg stump.

Rahul though didn't let the innings lose any momentum as he smacked six sixes along with three fours.

But the day belonged to Iyer, who, despite a scratchy start, had crossed 50 off 66 balls. Once he passed the 50-run mark, the stylish right-hander batted fluently to notch up his first century in 16 ODIs.

The centurion fell shortly afterwards, caught off Southee even as Rahul took control.

He reached his half-century off 41 balls as India eased past 300 in the 47th over.

Rahul's carnage meant that New Zealand conceded 191 runs in the last 20 overs. Kedar Jadhav remained unbeaten on 26 off 15 balls, stitching 55 off 27 balls with Rahul.

Brief Scores:

India: 347 for 4 in 50 overs (Shreyas Iyer 103, KL Rahul 88 not out, Virat Kohli 51; Tim Southee 2/85).
