Spirited India reach Champions Trophy hockey semis

Melbourne, December 6: India turned a leaf in their hockey history to enter the semi-finals of the men's Champions Trophy on their return to the tournament after a gap of six years. They beat Belgium in a 1-0 cliffhanger to book a meeting with either Australia or England.

The win earned India their first shot at a Champions Trophy medal in 30 years, with their last medal - a bronze - coming in 1982. The hard-fought victory also ensured India a top-four finish in the elite tournament since 2004 when they finished fourth in Lahore, Pakistan.

Nithin Thimmiah's goal in the first half gave India the fillip they needed, but Sardar Singh's boys had to ward off a threatening Belgium in the second half to hold onto their lead. But the Indian defence, especially vice captain VR Raghunath, stood up tall to keep out a flurry of penalty corners earned by Belgium in the closing stages.

Sardar Singh, who was facilitated at the start of the match for his 150th international appearance, once again made a vital assist that allowed Thimmiah score his second goal of the tournament. A perfect pass found Thimmiah 12 yards off the Belgian post and he finished off with a tap-in job that sounded the board to make it 1-0.

Two late penalty corners conceded at the end of the first half gave India a scare but the Belgians couldn't convert either, including a disallowed tap-in after the whistle, as they went into the breather a goal down.

India had the better of opening exchanges in the second half but Yuvraj Walmiki and Gurvinder Singh Chandi missed two close chances. The last 15 minutes saw the red shirts storming Indian 25-yard line repeatedly. India did counter a few times on the break but the finishing kept eluding the strikers.

In the end, Thimmiah's goal stood as the lone strike of the match, taking India through to the semis. In the earlier two quarter-finals, Pakistan beat Germany 2-0 to set up a semi-final meeting with Netherlands who beat New Zealand 2-0.

Jul 21: The tickets sold for the now-postponed ICC T20 World Cup will remain valid if Australia hosts the edition in 2021 instead of India.

In case the event is shifted to 2022, all ticket-holders will be entitled to a full refund, the ICC stated on its website on Monday night after postponing the mega-event this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament was to be held in October-November but will now be conducted later because of the pandemic.

The ICC has not yet announced which country will host which edition as there are operational issues that both the Indian and Australian cricket Boards need to sort out.

The world body had opened ticket booking through its ticketing partners and a significant number was already sold.

"Ticket holders are welcome to retain their tickets, noting, if Australia hosts in 2021, tickets will remain valid for fans who have already bought and will be automatically updated to reflect the new dates.

"If Australia hosts in 2022, for tickets already bought a full refund will be processed automatically," ICC stated in a series of FAQs.

Fans can retain their tickets until a date is confirmed for the event.

Refund requests can be made until December 15 and they will be processed within 30 days after an online submission.

The hospitality package will also remain valid for the 2021 fixtures.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not end its partnership with Chinese companies. Vivo, the Chinese smartphone maker, is the main sponsor of the new IPL season as well. Apart from Vivo, PayTM and Dream 11 will also be at the helm of the 13th edition of the IPL. The IPL governing council meeting on Sunday decided to retain the old sponsors.

As soon as the IPL GC announced the decision of retaining the sponsors, a huge number of fans took to Twitter to slam the board for the same. #BoycottIPL started trending as the users urged others to boycott the tournament for the Chinese connection.

Earlier, the demand for exclusion of Chinese companies from the IPL was strong in the wake of the India-China border dispute. But the BCCI cannot abruptly end its collaboration with them. Because of the signed contract itself. And in this age of declining economy, it is difficult to find new sponsors quickly.

The current BCCI contract with Vivo is for five years. Vivo has invested Rs 2,199 crore to become the main sponsor of the IPL. The contract was signed in 2017. However, the BCCI’s move is paving the way for new discussions as calls are mounting across the country to boycott Chinese companies.

The BCCI announced other important decisions besides retaining sponsors. The IPL will be held from September 19 to November 10. The Indian government has given permission to the BCCI to hold the IPL in the UAE. With this, all obstacles in the way of organizing the tournament were removed.

The IPL matches will be played at 7.30 pm Indian time (6 pm UAE time). Most matches are about one match a day. There are a total of ten ‘double headers’ (two matches a day) in the tournament. Franchisees are allowed to appoint as many replacements as they want in the new season in view of the new health situation. At the same time, the maximum number of players a franchise can accommodate is 24. The BCCI is also planning to host a women’s IPL tournament.

Mumbai, Mar 8: Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to India's ODI squad as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the team for the upcoming South Africa series.

South Africa are scheduled to tour India for a three-match ODI series, starting from March 12.

India's ODI squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Virat Kohli (C ), KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) have already announced their squad for the series and spinner George Linde was given maiden ODI call-up.

South Africa squad: Quinton de Kock (c, wk), Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Kyle Verreynne, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Jon-Jon Smuts, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla, Beuran Hendricks, Anrich Nortje, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Janneman Malan.

The first ODI will be played in Dharamsala while the other two matches will be played in Lucknow and Kolkata on March 15 and 18, respectively.
