I would have retired if I were in Sachin’s shoes, says Ganguly

New Delhi, December 10: Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly was critical of Sachin Tendulkar’s form and said that he if was in a similiar situation he may have retired from cricket.

“Sachin desperately needs to get runs. He has achieved a lot. He is getting a long rope because of what he has achieved. By now he should know how to turn it around,” Ganguly told ‘Headlines Today’ on Sunday.

“As somebody watching it from outside, Tendulkar is not performing and I think if I were Tendulkar I would go (retire). But it’s upto him at the present moment. We want to see the great man going with a bat held high and not in terrible form,” he remarked.

Ganguly also endorsed the idea of ‘split captaincy’ and said Mahendra Singh Dhoni should not be leading the Indian cricket team in all formats.

“I am not saying just ship him off all the formats of the game because India are going into a transition phase and building a new team.

“Sit with Dhoni and ask him what form of cricket he wants to captain. He has done a lot of good things for Indian cricket, but at the present moment, I fear that we will lose him as a player if he continues like this,” Ganguly said with a note of caution.

Despite having lost six out of the last seven Tests against England, Ganguly chose not to be too harsh on Dhoni. “Wicketkeeping is never easy especially when you have a bowling attack like ours, which has not performed over a period of time. You keep for hours and then you captain the side and you come out and bat at no 7. So it’s never easy for for Dhoni and I’m a firm believer that his job has to be split and he needs a reprieve in some format,” said Ganguly.

Continuing on the same topic, Ganguly said: “You do not expect selectors to come out and say ‘we have put Dhoni on notice’. You can’t say this in public, it’s not fair. I don’t think that will ever happen with the BCCI.

“I don’t know what the real story is. Whether Dhoni has been put on notice or whether the selectors have spoken to him or not. It is immaterial. Half the players don’t get to know it. If you are trying to build a new team, the message has to be consistent. I agree that Dhoni needs to be looked after and needs to be spoken to,” he explained.

Discussing Zaheer Khan’s omission, Ganguly said the Indian team is going through a rebuilding phase. “You have to plan. My point is that the plan has to be uniform for everyone.”

Christchurch, Mar 2: India captain Virat Kohli on Monday said the under-fire Rishabh Pant has got a "lot of chances" but the team is not looking to try someone else in the youngster's place just yet as one player can't be singled out in a collective failure.

Pant has been under the scanner for the past one year because of his inconsistent run. His tally of 60 runs across four innings in the 0-2 Test series loss to New Zealand, which concluded here on Monday, has only amplified the debate whether it was prudent to leave out a keeper of Wriddhiman Saha's calibre and back Pant.

"...we have given him (Pant) a lot of chances in the home season as well starting from Australia. Then he was not playing for a bit. In turn he really worked hard on himself," Kohli came to Pant's defence after the series here.

"You need to figure out when is the right time to give someone else a chance. If you push people too early, they can lose confidence," he added.

"...collectively, we didn't perform. I don't believe in singling him out. We take the hit together as a group whether it's the batting group or as a team."

When asked if he believes Pant has taken his place in the side for granted, Kohli made it clear that the culture of this team doesn't encourage anyone to think along those lines.

"I don't see anyone taking his place for granted in this team. That's the culture we have set. People are told to take responsibilities and work hard. Whether it happens or not is a different thing. Then you can have a conversation with the players," he said.

"But no one has come here thinking I am going to play every game or I am indispensable," he added in no uncertain terms.

Kohli, just like head coach Ravi Shastri, made it clear that Pant can make a difference in overseas conditions and he won't like to deviate during future tours.

"The time that he didn't play, he really worked hard on his game. So we thought this is the right time because of his game and the way he plays because he can make a difference lower down the order.

"That was our planning behind it. We can't really fluctuate when it comes to what we planned," he added.

Jan 30: Three days after Los Angeles basketball great Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others perished in a helicopter crash, his wife, Vanessa, broke her silence with an Instagram message saying she was “completely devastated” by their loss.

The social media text was posted alongside a recent family photo of Kobe and Vanessa Bryant with all four of their daughters - Gianna, who died with her father, along with the couple’s eldest, Natalia, 17, 3-year-old Bianka, and the youngest, Capri, born in June 2019.

Kobe Bryant and the couple’s second daughter, knicknamed Gigi, died on Sunday when the helicopter they were flying in en route to the Mamba Sports Academy for a girl’s basketball tournament crashed in foggy weather on a hillside northwest of Los Angeles.

Gianna Bryant was a member of the Mamba team due to compete that day. Her father, who retired from the National Basketball Association in 2016 after 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers, was the coach of his daughter’s team. ]

The pilot and six more passengers were also killed - two other 13-year-old girls involved in the tournament, three of their parents and another coach. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The death of Bryant, 41, an 18-time NBA all-star, five-time Lakers champion and one of the world’s most admired sports figures, unleashed an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans, fellow athletes and politicians around the globe.

“My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time,” Vanessa Bryant, 37, a former model, wrote on her Instagram account.

“We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri,” she added.

The message goes on to say: “We are also devastated for the families who lost their loved ones on Sunday, and we share in their grief intimately. There aren’t enough words to describe our pain right now.

“I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved. We were so incredibly blessed to have them in our lives. I wish they were here with us forever. They were our beautiful blessings taken from us too soon.”

She directed anyone wishing to “further Kobe and Gianna’s legacy in youth sports” to visit the site MambaSports Foundation.org.

There has been no word yet on funeral arrangements.
