After five years, Pakistan team in Bangalore

December 23, 2012

Pak_BangBangalore, December 23: Amid unprecedented security arrangements, the Pakistan cricket team arrived here on Saturday night for its first bilateral series since the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008.

Following the brutal carnage, India had cancelled all the bilateral engagements with its neighbours and had excluded Pakistan players from the cash-rich Indian Premier League.

More than four years after the horrific incident allegedly plotted in Pakistan and relations between the two countries seemingly on the mend, Pakistan will begin its Indian campaign with a T20 International here at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, that has turned into a fortress for the December 25 match.

Pakistan is scheduled to play another T20 in Ahmedabad (December 28) followed by three one-dayers in Chennai (December 30), Kolkata (January 3) and Delhi (January 6).

The last time the two archrivals met was in Sri Lanka during the World T20 in October, a match India won comfortably. Prior to this, the M S Dhoni-led team had tamed Pakistan in Mohali in the semifinal of the 2011 World Cup which eventually it won in Mumbai, beating Sri Lanka in the final match.

This, however, is the first bilateral series after the visit by a Pakistani team towards the end of 2007. This was in fact India’s turn to travel across the border for a return series but there has been no international cricket in Pakistan since the March 2009 attack on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan team and India were reluctant to play in a “neutral venue.”

After months of discussions between the two cricket boards, India agreed to host Pakistan for a short series, squeezing it in the gap between England T20s which concluded on Saturday and ODIs that begin on January 11.

Notwithstanding the huge excitement that the rubber has generated, there have been a few fringe elements which are up in arms against India hosting the arch-rivals. Threats like laying siege to the stadium to digging the playing arena haven’t been taken lightly from those responsible for the security. The organisers at the Chinnaswamy Stadium have used iron railings to barricade an area of about 30 metres from the pitch as a precautionary measure.

While local outfits have made their disapproval clear, the Taliban, too, described the Pakistan team's tour as a “disgusting gesture” and held out threats of violence against India.

In a statement emailed to journalists, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan said the “visit of Pakistani team to India is a disgusting gesture. Pakistan's government is doing all this on the orders of their god America and in fear of India. God willing, mujahideen of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan will soon clear the debt of blood of martyrs with India.”

Vitoria, Jul 20: Lionel Messi won a record seventh top scoring title in the Spanish league after netting twice in Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Alav s in the final round.

Messi ended with 25 goals, four more than Karim Benzema, who did not score in Real Madrid's 2-2 draw at Legan s.

Messi is the first player to finish as the league's top scorer in seven different seasons. He reached the milestone despite missing games because of an injury early in the season. The Argentine's 25 goals came in 33 matches.

Messi was tied with Telmo Zarra with six scoring titles. He has also now equaled Hugo Sanchez's feat of four straight top-scorer trophies.

"Individual achievements are always secondary," Messi said on Sunday.

"I wished it could have come along with the league title."

This is also the third successive season that Messi finished with the most assists 21 in the league.

Ansu Fati, Luis Su rez and Nelson Semedo also scored Sunday for Barcelona, which had already secured second place behind Madrid.

Fati opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Messi added to the lead 10 minutes later and Su rez closed the first-half scoring in the 44th. Semedo got on the board in the 57th and Messi in the 75th to help Barcelona rebound from a 2-1 home loss to Osasuna.

"Today things were different," Messi said.

"The team showed better attitude and commitment. It was an important step forward for us ahead of what's left in the season."

Barcelona now turns its focus to its Aug. 8 home game against Napoli in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The first leg, played before the break, ended 1-1.

Barcelona coach Quique Seti n finished under pressure after the team relinquished a two-point lead over Madrid when the league resumed following the pandemic break. It was four points back before Madrid's match at Legan s.

Barcelona defender Cl ment Lenglet had to be substituted early in the second half because of an apparent muscle injury.

Alav s, sitting in 15th, had already done enough to stay up.

BAR A "B" TEAM

American winger Konrad de la Fuente scored twice as Barcelona's "B" team beat Valladolid B to keep alive its hopes of reaching the second division next season. The victory put Barcelona in the second round of the promotion playoffs.

The 19-year-old De la Fuente, who recently had his contract with Barcelona extended through the 2021-22 season, scored in each half.

Indore, Jan 8:  India skipper Virat Kohli has added yet another feather to his cap by becoming the fastest player to score 1,000 runs in T20I cricket as a captain. Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 30 during India''s seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series on Tuesday evening.

Kohli achieved the milestone of scoring 1,000 runs as captain in his 30th T20I inning. He is the second Indian and sixth overall after MS Dhoni to have achieved the feat. Dhoni had scored 1112 runs in 62 T20I games as captain.

Faf du Plessis (1273 runs from 40 games), Kane Williamson (1083 runs in 39 games), Eoin Morgan (1013 runs in 43 games) and Ireland''s William Porterfield (1002 runs in 56 games) are other captains on the list.

During India''s emphatic victory at the Holkar Stadium, Kohli also surpassed team-mate Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the series, as the top run-getter in the T20Is. Kohli now has 2663 runs from 71 innings.

Both had finished 2019 as joint top-scorers in T20Is, with 2633 runs each.

India, already with an unassailable lead of 1-0 in the series, will now face Sri Lanka in the final T20I on Friday in Pune. The first match between the two teams was called off without a ball being bowled due to wet patches on the pitch in Guwahati last Sunday.
