New ODI rules make bowlers handicap

January 2, 2013

AshwinMumbai, Jan 2: It would make sense for every photographer, every TV camera to take close up shots of all bowlers who participate in ODIs. Why? Because they could soon become like dinosaurs and become extinct. The new ODI rules where only four fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle at all times, as opposed to the five, which was the case for the last 20 years, is a serious handicap for the bowlers. While the powers that be in the ICC have tried to compensate by giving one new ball at each end and increased the number of bouncers per over from one to two, it is only a token gesture and akin to giving a terminally ill patient a tablet of crocin.

Already, bowlers have everything going against them in the limited-overs format. The boundaries during ODIs and T20s are pulled in by almost 10 metres. The batsmen are all armed with bazooka bats where even mishits end up going into the stands and have all the rules supporting them. The best bowler is allowed to bowl only 10 overs.

Now, by taking away the cushion of an extra fielder at the fence, the custodians of the game are telling the bowler, you are just a blue-collar worker, the batsman is the King who people come to watch.

At least, with five fielders, the bowlers could work out a batsman and think of ways to not concede a boundary. But with just four fielders, there will be one spot in the deep that will be unmanned. Which means, the batsman can just line up against a bowler, pick his spot and hit in the vacant spot.

While the bowlers must be given credit for learning new tricks of the trade like slower balls, slower bouncers and the full-pitched deliveries on the toes or the full wide delivery just on the tramlines outside off stump and it is only time before they will find a way to counter the latest shock that the ICC has given them, one expects more sense and a concern to provide an even-playing field while formulating rules.

The switch hit, where the batsmen is also allowed to change the position of his feet apart from the grip (from a right-hander to a left-hander), has already put the bowler at a disadvantage. After all, before commencing an over, he has to tell the umpire whether he is bowling over or round the wicket or he is bowling right-handed or left. The umpire then communicates the decision to the batsman. That helps the batsman predict the angle of delivery and helps him to premeditate and play the switch-hit and beat normally set fields. The bowler is not given any lee-way in terms of leg-side wides when he tries to defeat the batsman who is attempting to switch-hit. The latest rule-change will only embolden the batsmen to play more switch-hits and dent the figures and reputation of cricket's second-class citizens.

What the new rule will also do is force the bowlers to be less attacking. Already, the art of flighting the ball and deceiving the batsman in the air is going out of the game thanks to spinners being deposited into the stands with alarming regularity. With the security of only four fielders on the fence, expect spinners to bowl more and more darts.

Indian skipper MS Dhoni was vehement in his criticism of the new rules after his team lost to Pakistan in the first ODI at Chennai. "It's difficult for the spinners to bowl with five fielders inside especially when the wicket is flat. Not to forget, people were worried when the ODIs were introduced that spinners will have to bowl flat and they are not flighting the ball anymore. I don't know what they really expect with five fielders inside. They will just dart in. If you have the variations of a Saeed Ajmal, it will different but overall it's very difficult. These rules are more in favour of fast bowlers and teams who play with three or four fast bowlers."

It's about time the ICC wakes up and puts these rule changes in perspective and change them as fast as possible. Because at this rate, we will soon have only only bowling machines to bowl at batsmen in ODIs as no one would want to be a bowler.

And if anyone does want to indulge in the hazards of becoming a fast bowler in the ODI game, the ICC better devise an award for them. They can all it the TFC award and tell all the bowlers Thanks For Coming today.

Vitoria, Jul 20: Lionel Messi won a record seventh top scoring title in the Spanish league after netting twice in Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Alav s in the final round.

Messi ended with 25 goals, four more than Karim Benzema, who did not score in Real Madrid's 2-2 draw at Legan s.

Messi is the first player to finish as the league's top scorer in seven different seasons. He reached the milestone despite missing games because of an injury early in the season. The Argentine's 25 goals came in 33 matches.

Messi was tied with Telmo Zarra with six scoring titles. He has also now equaled Hugo Sanchez's feat of four straight top-scorer trophies.

"Individual achievements are always secondary," Messi said on Sunday.

"I wished it could have come along with the league title."

This is also the third successive season that Messi finished with the most assists 21 in the league.

Ansu Fati, Luis Su rez and Nelson Semedo also scored Sunday for Barcelona, which had already secured second place behind Madrid.

Fati opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Messi added to the lead 10 minutes later and Su rez closed the first-half scoring in the 44th. Semedo got on the board in the 57th and Messi in the 75th to help Barcelona rebound from a 2-1 home loss to Osasuna.

"Today things were different," Messi said.

"The team showed better attitude and commitment. It was an important step forward for us ahead of what's left in the season."

Barcelona now turns its focus to its Aug. 8 home game against Napoli in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The first leg, played before the break, ended 1-1.

Barcelona coach Quique Seti n finished under pressure after the team relinquished a two-point lead over Madrid when the league resumed following the pandemic break. It was four points back before Madrid's match at Legan s.

Barcelona defender Cl ment Lenglet had to be substituted early in the second half because of an apparent muscle injury.

Alav s, sitting in 15th, had already done enough to stay up.

BAR A "B" TEAM

American winger Konrad de la Fuente scored twice as Barcelona's "B" team beat Valladolid B to keep alive its hopes of reaching the second division next season. The victory put Barcelona in the second round of the promotion playoffs.

The 19-year-old De la Fuente, who recently had his contract with Barcelona extended through the 2021-22 season, scored in each half.

London, Jan 11: Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's famous lap around the Wankhede Stadium after the World Cup 2011 win has been nominated in Laureas's list for the most inspiring sporting event in the last twenty years.

The moment featuring Tendulkar has been described as "Carried on the shoulders by a nation".

On his sixth attempt at the World Cup and with India not having won the competition since 1983, Tendulkar finally became a part of the team that lifted the coveted trophy. Carried on the shoulders of the Indian team, he made a lap of honour, shedding tears of joy after the victory was sealed in his home city.

The 2011 World Cup was also the first time, in which a host nation ended up winning the trophy.

Apart from Tendulkar, England's Andrew Flintoff is the only other cricketer to feature in the list. In 2005, England managed to defeat Australia in an Ashes Test, but Flintoff chose to first shake hands with Brett Lee rather than celebrate with his side.

Matthias Steiner (weightlifting), Natalie du Toit (swimming), Sky Brown (skateboarding), Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee (triathlon), Xia Boyu (mountaineering) have been nominated in the list.

Female tennis stars also feature in the list for coming up with an equal play, equal pay campaign. After pressure from Venus Williams and others, Wimbledon announced that female tennis players would receive prize money equal to the men's.

German international footballer Miroslav Klose was playing for Lazio in Italy's Serie A in 2012 against Napoli when he rose for a ball in the early moments of the game.

The ball came spiraling off his hand and skirted into the back of the net and a goal was awarded. While most players would carry on as if nothing had happened, Klose was honest with the referee and admitted that he handled the ball.

As a result, he also finds a place on the list.

The Laureus Sporting Moment Award celebrates the moments where the sport has unified people in the most extraordinary way.

This campaign has shortlisted 20 sporting stories from the last 20 years that have left their mark on the world.

The winner will be decided on the basis of public voting. It has already started, and the final date to cast the vote is February 16.

Finally, the result will be declared on February 17.
With three knock-out rounds, the top-20 moments will be whittled down to ten then five, with the top-five moments going head-to-head.

Mumbai, May 21: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has chosen legendary Sachin Tendulkar over current skipper Virat Kohli as a better batsman in the ODI format, considering the changed rules of the game and the Mumbaikar's longevity of career.

Tendulkar, who retired in 2013, played 463 ODIs and amassed 18, 426 runs with 49 hundreds at an average of 44.83.

Kohli, on the other hand, has played 248 ODIs and scored 11, 867 runs with 43 tons at an average of 59.33.

"Sachin Tendulkar, because probably with one white ball and four fielders inside the circle, not five fielders outside, it will be Sachin Tendulkar for me," Gambhir said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'.

Nowadays, a one-day innings is played with two white balls and with three powerplays.

In the first power play (overs 1-10), two fielders are allowed beyond the 30-yard circle, while in the second powerplay (overs 10-40) four fielders are allowed. In the last powerplay (overs 40-50), five fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

Gambhir, who was the star performer in 2011 ODI World Cup final which India won, feels that the change in rules has helped batsmen.

"It's difficult because Virat Kohli has done phenomenally well but I think the rules have changed as well, which has helped a lot of new batters," elaborated Gambhir, who played 58 Tests and 147 ODIs.

"The new generation, with 2 new balls, no reverse swing, nothing for the finger spin, five fielders inside for the 50 overs, probably that makes batting much easier.

He said he would also go with Tendulkar, considering his longevity and flow of the ODI cricket format at that time.

"Probably I’ll go with Sachin Tendulkar if we see the longevity and flow of the one-day cricket format.

"Look at how Sachin Tendulkar has played, different rules, that time 230 to 240, was a winning total," Gambhir signed off.
