MOM award handed to Dhoni to boost his morale: Report

New Delhi, Jan 8: In a report that threatens to shake the foundations of Indian cricket, it has been alleged that a panel of TV pundits adjudicated the Man-of-the-Match award in Sunday's ODI to Indian captain MS Dhoni to 'boost his morale'.

A leading Indian English newspaper on Tuesday quoted a former cricketer, pleading anonymity, who voted in favour of Dhoni that Dhoni was given the award to boost his morale at a time when the time wasn't doing well.

Some commentators - who did not voted in Dhoni's favour - were completely flummoxed by the suggestion and questioned the rationale of giving the award to Dhoni when others deserved it more. Dhoni was the top scorer in India’s innings of 167 in 43.4 overs, with 36 off 55 balls, and during India's successful defense of that poor total the Indian captain took two dismissals behind the stumps, including his 200th catch in ODI cricket. However, there were other more deserving candidates.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck two early blows on the way to figures of 10-2-31-2; the debutant seamer Shami Ahmed bowled a record four maidens – the most by an Indian in his first ODI – and removed Saeed Ajmal in a tense finale; Ishant Sharma was the most successful wicket-taker with 3 for 3 in 9.5 overs; and the allrounder Ravindra Jadeja made 27 (the third-highest score of India’s total) and had an excellent analysis of 10-1-19-1.

It has also been learned that the Pakistan team had lodged an informal complaint over the adjudicating of the Man-of-the-Match award to Dhoni after the first ODI in Chennai, which Pakistan won by six wickets. In that match, the 23-year-old opener Nasir Jamshed scored an unbeaten 101 to seal victory, but the award went to Dhoni for his 113 not out which took India’s score from 29 for 5 to 227 for 6.

Malappuram, Jun 6: One more COVID-19 death was reported in Kerala on Saturday taking the toll in the State to 15.

The 61-year-old deceased, Hamsa Koya, a former footballer who represented Maharashtra in Santosh Trophy, had returned from Mumbai with his family on May 21.

Koya was undergoing treatment at Manjeri Medical College in Malappuram. The medical bulletin issued said that he was suffering from pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

On June 5, as his health deteriorated, he was administered plasma therapy on the advice of the state medical board. However, he did not respond to medicines and breathed his last at 6:30 am on Saturday.

The medical bulletin said that his family members including his wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren of 3 years and a 3 month-old child also had tested COVID-19 positive and were earlier shifted to hospital for treatment.

With this, the total death toll in Kerala has reached 15.

Silverstone, Aug 2: Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton on Sunday won his seventh British Grand Prix title after a dramatic last-lap at the Silverstone Circuit.

Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas were at the first and second spot respectively until tyre drama struck.

Second-placed man Bottas was the first to suffer as his tyre deflated on lap 50, resulting in 11th place finish. Hamilton also suffered a similar issue before the final few seconds of the race.

However, with Max Verstappen having opted to pit a few laps from the end to try and claim the fastest lap, Hamilton had enough time in hand to just cross the line first, five seconds ahead of Verstappen and the third-placed Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz had been set to finish fourth, but his own last lap tyre issue saw him eventually come home P13, allowing Renault's Daniel Ricciardo to claim fourth, following a late pass on the sister McLaren of Lando Norris.

Renault's Esteban Ocon finished sixth, having enjoyed a race-long battle with Lance Stroll's Racing Point, with Pierre Gasly having enjoyed a fine race to finish seventh for AlphaTauri.

Alex Albon finished eighth for Red Bull, having recovered from a lap 1 tussle with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen that saw him fall to last, while Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top 10, Vettel holding off a late charge form the recovering Mercedes of Bottas.

Indore, Jan 8: Former opener Gautam Gambhir is mighty impressed with the way K.L. Rahul batted during India's comfortable seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second T20I and said it amazes him why the right-handed batsman can't play the same way in Tests. On Tuesday, Rahul top-scored with a 32-ball 45 as India chased down the meagre target of 143 with utmost ease at the Holkar Stadium.

"Rahul is in unbelievable form. It amazes me every time I see Rahul bat that why didn't he play the same way in Test cricket," Gambhir told the host broadcasters. "It's not about only white-ball cricket; it is about Test cricket too. He just got into a shell too much. With the kind of quality he posses, he is someone who can get you a 50-ball 100 in Test cricket as well. The kind of shots he has is superb," he added.

Shikhar Dhawan, who is making a return to the team after an injury lay-off, also contributed with a "rusty" 30-ball 32. Both Dhawan and Rahul are virtually playing for the second opener's slot for the World T20, with Rohit Sharma set to be one.

And Gambhir feels going by the current form, Rahul should be opening the batting alongside Rohit in Australia. "You can't compare IPL to international cricket. When you're playing for Delhi Capitals, you know there's no one waiting for the opportunity, but when you're playing for the country and you know there's someone who's actually can replace you, there'll always be pressure. And today it was shown who's in better form," Gambhir said.

The cricketer-turned-politician, however, exuded confidence that Dhawan will bounce back strongly in the next game. "Shikhar Dhawan looked rusty but it's a good thing that he got some runs under his belt. It will help him when he walks out to bat in the next game. Had he got out early, the pressure would have been more," he said.

India will play Sri Lanka in the final T20I in Pune on Friday before taking on Australia in a three-match ODI series beginning January 14 in Mumbai.
