Kumble shuns RCB, to join Mumbai Indians

January 22, 2013

KumbleBangalore, Jan 22: Beleaguered Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who have already lost the services of Rahul Dravid and Venkatesh Prasad, will begin the sixth edition of IPL coming April, without another iconic figure Anil Kumble.

The five-year association of former India captain and the Vijay Mallya-owned franchise the RCB has come to an end with both parties mutually deciding to part ways with immediate effect, it was announced on Monday.

Kumble, who is the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, will join another Indian Premier League franchise, Mumbai Indians, as its chief mentor, a post he was holding with the Bangalore team for the last two seasons after ending his playing career with the side after the 2010 event.

Kumble said he has decided to take up the job with Mumbai to expand the horizons that his sports management company Tenvic has visualised. “I passionately believe that sport has the potential to be an agent of change in nation building,” the ace leggie remarked. “I have made this decision to take up a new assignment based on an opportunity that my company, Tenvic, has been offered.

With this, we will be uniquely positioned to consolidate my passion with the interests of our partners to contribute to the growth of sport across disciplines, especially grassroots sport.

In my discussion with the Reliance Group Management, I find that they have a great and compelling vision for sports in this country, which aligns with my venture’s aspirations in making sports the main catalyst of youth development.

“Tenvic is a sports training and consulting company with Kumble as its co-founder. India’s highest Test wicket-taker said his association with the RCB was an enjoyable one as player, captain and mentor. “During this period, we have achieved most of our objectives and RCB has emerged as one of the leading franchises in the IPL. I leave with happy memories.”

Kumble, who began his stint with the RCB as a player with the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League in 2008, led the team to the final of the 2009 edition in South Africa.

During his first year as mentor, RCB entered the finals of both IPL and Champions League T20 in 2011.

Mallya in his reaction said that Kumble had been a great asset to RCB as captain, mentor and advisor. “He has helped shape the entire team and was instrumental in creating a unique sense of passion and commitment.”

Owner of the Mumbai franchise, Nita Ambani, said: “In Anil Kumble, we have a new chief mentor who has extensive cricketing knowledge not only as a player of international stature but also as an able administrator. He is one of India’s leading sporting icons and we have great pleasure in having him on board.”

Bengaluru, Jun 4: Indian men's hockey team defender Harmanpreet Singh is delighted and honoured to be nominated for the Arjuna Award by Hockey India.

The Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal has been nominated for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award while her compatriots Vandana Katariya, Monika and Harmanpreet Singh have been nominated for the Arjuna Award.

"I was extremely delighted to hear the news. It's an honour to be nominated for the Arjuna Award and I am sure the nomination will motivate me to perform even better in the upcoming years. All of us have received tremendous support from Hockey India over the years and I was extremely happy to know that Rani has been nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Vandana Katariya and Monika have been nominated for the Arjuna Award. They have put up some brilliant performances in the recent past and I would like to extend my congratulations to them," Harmanpreet said.

The 24-year-old dragflick sensation stepped up his role in the team and shouldered the responsibility of vice-captain with aplomb. As a defender-dragflicker, he was instrumental in the team's winning performance in the FIH Series Finals in Odisha. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Test Event, he captained the team to victory in the absence of Manpreet Singh who was rested for the tournament.

Harmanpreet was also part of the Indian team that won the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers against Russia last year. Harmanpreet said that he has been able to perform for the team only because of the support he has received from his teammates.

"I am very happy with the way I have been contributing to the team in the last couple of years. However, I have been able to come up with the goods only because of the way my teammates have supported me. Hockey is a team sport and all of us ensure that we are contributing to the team's cause in some way or the other. If we score a goal, then it's not only the goal scorer, who takes the credit, but the entire team is credited for a particular effort," said the defender.

Harmanpreet added that booking a place in the Tokyo Olympic Games was the biggest achievement for the team in 2019.

"It was simply amazing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in front of our home crowd last year. I will cherish the memory forever. The balance of our side was fantastic and everyone chipped in to make the tournament a memorable one. Now, we will give everything we can to come up with great results at the Olympics next year. It's our sole target at the moment and all of us are up for the challenge. Hopefully, we will become a much better side once we play our first match in Tokyo," he said.

New Delhi, Apr 28: West Indies flamboyant batsman Chris Gayle has lashed out at former teammate Ramnaresh Sarwan calling him 'worse than coronavirus'.

Gayle, the colossal figure in the shortest format of the game blamed Sarwan for his departure from Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Jamaica Tallawahs.

The left-handed batsman joined St Lucia Zouks as their marquee player for the 2020 CPL season after Tallawahs chose not to retain him.

Gayle has played for Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the past. He has won the CPL title twice with the Tallawahs and played in the final with the Patriots in 2017.

"The owner of the franchise is a very nice man, I have no problem with him. I think he was actually persuaded to get rid of Chris Gayle," Gayle said in three parts on his YouTube channel.

"So someone has to be in his years telling him to get rid of Gayle. Sarwan, you are worse than the coronavirus right now. What transpired with the Tallahwahs, you had a big part to play.

Sarwan, you are a snake. You know, you are not the most loved person in the Caribbean. You are still stabbing people in the back," he added.

Gayle is the leading T20 run-scorer of all time as well as the man with the most centuries in the format. He is also the leading CPL run-scorer of all time, having amassed 2,344 runs in the tournament.
