Reading would take my mind off cricket: Rahul Dravid

January 27, 2013

Jaipur, Jan 27: It was Rahul Dravid's first exposure to the Jaipur Lit Fest on Saturday, and he seemed quite impressed with what he saw. "Never expected so many people," the former India skipper said as he was greeted by a deluge of fans.

In fact, he was clearly the top draw on Republic Day, which saw the biggest crowd. It was a busy afternoon for the cricket icon, who first launched a book on Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi along with Sharmila Tagore, then participated in a talk show presented by Rajasthan Royals called 'Corner of a distant playing field' and finally interacted with the media before signing books.dravid_sharmila_pataudi_300

"For me, reading books was a way to destress," Dravid said about his affinity for the written word. "It was never about gathering knowledge. Whenever I wanted to take my mind off cricket, I would pick up books. That's how I developed the habit of reading. However, not many of the current Indian cricketers are known to be book lovers. There might not be too many books on the game that they can read," Dravid said. "To get them to read, there should be books that they can get hooked to."

True to his self, the Royals skipper presented a straight bat and left alone the bouncers with great elegance. Should cricket and politics be mixed? "Well, it's happening everywhere. There are things that do not really happen the way we think they should." But in his heart, does he feel the Pakistan women's cricket team should have been allowed to play their matches in Mumbai? "In my heart, yes. But there are so many issues that come in the way."

How long will he continue to play in the IPL? "One step at a time. I am playing this year." How would he react to any attempts to shift Rajasthan Royals home matches out of Jaipur? "I and the Royals will do whatever the BCCI says."

Dravid says his post-retirement life has been all about writing and commentary, and says these present their own challenges. "There are challenges here too," he said. "I know of brilliant cricket writers who have never played at the highest level."

The profile of cricketers has seen a huge change from the days of Pataudi, when the princes and the elite classes would play the game. With most of the current crop of cricketers coming from small towns, Dravid said, "It shows how much the facilities for cricket in smaller towns have improved. The barrier between metropolitan and small-town cricketers has been broken."

Jan 23: Quinton de Kock has been named as the new captain of the South Africa One-Day International side, taking over from Faf du Plessis, who is dropped altogether from the three-match series against England next month.

Du Plessis led South Africa in their disastrous 2019 World Cup campaign and has hinted at international retirement from all formats following the Twenty20 global finals in Australia later this year.

"We all know the quality of the player that Quinton de Kock has grown to become," CSA director of cricket Graeme Smith said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Over the years we have watched him grow in confidence and become one of the top ODI wicket-keeper batsmen in the world. He has a unique outlook and manner in which he goes about his business and is tactically very street smart."

De Kock leads a 15-man squad with five uncapped players in seamers Lutho Sipamla and Sisanda Magala, left-arm orthodox spinner all-rounder Bjorn Fortuin, opening batsman Janneman Malan and wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne.

Magala, leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, seamer Lungi Ngidi and hard-hitting opening batsman Jon Jon Smuts must pass fitness tests before they can join the squad.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada will be rested for the series, while allrounders Chris Morris and Dwaine Pretorius have also not been able to force their way in.

"The road towards the 2023 Cricket World Cup starts now and we want players doing well in our domestic structures to see the rewards of the hard work that they have put in," CSA Independent Selector Linda Zondi added.

The first ODI will be staged in Cape Town on Feb.4th, with the second in Durban three days later and the final match of the series to be held in Johannesburg on Feb.9th.

Squad: Quinton de Kock (captain), Reeza Hendricks, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Jon Jon Smuts, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lutho Sipamla, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Sisanda Magala, Bjorn Fortuin, Beuran Hendricks, Janneman Malan, Kyle Verreynne.

New Delhi, Mar 1: Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif on Sunday heaped praise on Ravindra Jadeja after the all-rounder took a spectacular catch on the second day of the Christchurch Test against New Zealand.

Jadeja grabbed a one-handed stunner at deep square leg in the 72nd over to dismiss Neil Wagner, who had to depart after scoring 21 runs.

"Sir Jadeja for a reason! Jadeja Airlines, flying high! Terrific stuff," Kaif tweeted.

In the match, Jadeja also impressed with the ball. The left-handed bowler took two wickets while giving away 22 runs.

On day two, India bundled out New Zealand on 235 runs in the second Test. However, in their second innings, Indian batsmen again struggled to tackle the New Zealand pacers and lost six wickets with a lead of just 97 runs.

India went to stumps at 90/6, with Trent Boult doing the majority of the damage with three wickets.
