Don't put pressure on me, says Shahid Afridi

Karachi, Feb 23: Flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi asked national selectors to not put pressure on him by making unsolicited statements and also made it clear that the decision to quit the game remains his prerogative.

After recalling Afridi in the one-day squad for the series against South Africa, chief selector Iqbal Qasim had said the all-rounder will have to justify his selection by putting up a good show.

"I don't know in what context or scenario Iqbal Qasim said these things for me. But no one should put pressure on me," Afridi told reporters.

"My fans still want me to continue playing and I will decide myself till when to continue playing or when to leave," Afridi added.

Afridi said he was determined to do well for the country and no one needs to remind him that.

"I have always said that I will never give anyone a chance to tell me that it is time for me to go. I am going to South Africa in a confident state of mind and I am ready for the challenge and to perform well as I have done in the past," he said.

The chief selector's remarks about Afridi generated a lot of debate in the cricket circles with many former players and critics insisting that Qasim had made unnecessary comments.

Asked about his struggle in batting, Afridi said one couldn't play aggressive all the time batting at number seven.

Headingley, Jan 25: England have become the first team in the world to score 500,000 runs in Test cricket. They achieved the feat during the ongoing fourth and final Test against South Africa being played at The Wanderers.

On Friday - the opening day of the Test match -- England captain Joe Root's single through the covers took the Three Lions to a landmark 500,000 run-mark in the longest format of the game. They achieved the feat in their 1022nd Test match.

Australia comes second in the list, with 432,706 runs in 830 Tests. India, meanwhile, are third, with 273,518 runs in 540 Tests, followed by West Indies (270,441 runs in 545 Tests).

In the third Test played at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth, England had become the first team to play 500 Test matches on foreign soil. Australia are the second team to play the most away Test with 404 matches they have played so far.

India have played 268 Tests on foreign soil in which they have won 51, lost 113 and 104 have ended in a draw.

Aurangabad, Jan 23: An FIR has been registered against three people including former cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin for allegedly duping a travel agent, Mohammad Shadab, of more than Rs 20 lakh.

However, Mohammad Azharuddin has refuted allegations and said: "I strongly rubbish the false FIR filed against me in Aurangabad. I am consulting my legal team and would be taking action as necessary."

Azharuddin's personal assistant Mujeeb lives in Augurangabad and has good relations with the travel agency of Shadab.

The travel agent alleged that Mujeeb asked him to book some flight tickets but did not pay the amount.

The police have booked the three under Section 406, 420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Columbo, Jan 28: The Sri Lanka Cricket Board on Monday announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women`s T20 World Cup, slated to commence from February 21. The board also announced five standby players for the ensuing tournament.

The squad members are -- Chamari Atapattu (captain), Harshitha Madavi (vice captain), Anushka Sanjeewani, Hansima Karunaratne, Shashikala Siriwardene, Nilakshi De Silva, Ama Kanchana, Kavisha Dilhari, Udeshika Probodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, Hasini Perera, Sathya Sandeepani, Umesha Thimashini, Sugandika Kumari, Dilani Manodara.

The standby players are -- Sachini Nisansala, Prasadani Weerakkody, Oshadi Ranasinghe, Tharika Sewwandi, Inoka Ranaweera.

Sri Lanka will take on New Zealand in their opening encounter on February 22.
