Australia slump to a humiliating loss; India go 2-0 up

Hyderabad, Mar 6: The shocking ease with which Australia collapsed on Day four was surprising. Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin were quick to seize on the batsmen's remarkable lack of will to fight as India completed a mammoth win -- by an innings and 135 runs -- with a day to spare.

The 9,495 faithfuls had not even settled into their seats here at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Tuesday when Ishant Sharma started the carnage. Australia started the day at 74/2, a further 192 runs behind India, and were all out for 131. There was no need for a second session of play.

India needed all of 122 minutes and 35 overs to roll over the visitors. Australia became the first team to lose by an innings after declaring in the first innings. It was a clear reflection of the cobwebs in the minds of Australia's batsmen and the stranglehold the Indian spinners have had over them in this four-match series, which India now lead 2-0. Ishant got Shane Watson to tickle a ball straying down leg straight into Dhoni's gloves, and it was free fall for the Australians from there on.

Michael Clarke survived some tense moments that involved an edge to the 'keeper off Ishant's bowling which was turned down by umpire Kumar Dharmasena. But the Aussie skipper didn't last long as Jadeja got him with a beauty that spun across the face of the bat and knocked down the off stump.

Jadeja ensured there would be no more fight from the rival camp when he struck for the second time in the span of five deliveries to get rid of opener Ed Cowan (44; 150b, 6x4), with Virender Sehwag at slip alert to an opportunity that popped up off Dhoni's pads.

Ashwin added five more to the 12 wickets he bagged in Chennai, but it was Jadeja who was all over the Aussies like a rash. His direct hit from covers got rid of Moises Henriques and it was all over bar the shouting for the Aussies. Ashwin sowed the seeds of doubt in Aussie minds with the wickets of David Warner and Phil Hughes, both bowled while attempting the sweep to deliveries bowled over the wicket.

The Australians' lack of experience in Indian conditions and their limitations were fully exposed by the Ashwin-Jadeja duo. Poor shot selection made it worse. Glenn Maxwell failed to pick Ashwin's carrom ball and Virat Kohli took a smart catch -- again off Dhoni's pads -- to dismiss Peter Siddle. Matthew Wade succumbed to Ashwin a delivery later as Dhoni became the most successful Indian captain two minutes into the delayed lunch break.

With 22 Test match victories, he has now eclipsed Sourav Ganguly's mark of 21 wins.

Karachi, Apr 14: Disappointed with Kapil Dev's response, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi has backed his former teammate Shoaib Akhtar's proposal for an ODI series against India to help raise funds for the less privileged in their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Afridi told reporters in Kohat that he was surprised by the comments of Indian great Kapil and former IPL chairman, Rajeev Shukla, who outrightly dismissed Akhtar's suggestion.

"The entire world is fighting against coronavirus and we need unity in our region to defeat this common enemy. Such negative comments don't help at all," Afridi said.

"I don't see anything wrong with Shoaib Akhtar's suggestion for Pakistan and India to play cricket.

"Kapil's reaction has surprised me. I expected better from him and feel one should not talk like this in these crisis times."

Afridi said that he was also surprised at some of the "negative comments" Indian stars Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh's support for his charity foundation attracted.

"Sport is supposed to bring people together and build bridges. It is pretty disappointing."

Afridi also urged Prime Minister Imran Khan to order the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to restore departmental cricket in the country to save the livelihood of hundreds of domestic players.

"I myself played for the departments and witnessed how departments really salvaged domestic cricket in Pakistan and helped it thrive decade after decade.

"Departments take good care of the players and spend lots of money on the development of domestic cricket, so how can departmental cricket hurt Pakistan cricket," questioned Afridi.

He also questioned the PCB and the Pakistan team management for making a fitness of players a big issue.

"They are always talking about hard training and fitness tests. I have never seen fitness tests taken with such frequency and the result is that many players are getting injured and many of them are also unhappy with the situation."

Islamabad, Jun 13: Pakistan cricket team’s former captain Shahid Afridi, who has tested positive for coronavirus,  appears to have contracted the virus during his recent visit to Muzaffarabad city of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) where Pakistan has been sending its corona positive patients.

The former Pakistan cricketer was seen attending gatherings in Muzaffarabad last month without wearing a mask and not maintaining social distancing. He spewed venom against India during his rallies.

Afridi visited PoK to also express his solidarity with the people there who have been left to fend for themselves in combating COVID-19 as Pakistan has refused to provide any COVID fighting equipment like PPE kits and ventilators to the area’s handful of hospitals.

In fact, Pakistan has been using the PoK as a “dumping ground” for COVID-19 affected persons from all across the country as authorities want to keep Punjab province free of corona positive persons.

The locals held massive protests against Pakistan for setting up quarantine centres and shifting patients from parts of Pakistan to PoK.

People are immensely suffering in Pakistan occupied Kashmir due to spread of coronavirus as the region lacks proper medical facilities and has a handful of COVID-19 testing labs. There is also lack of expert medical staff to conduct COVID-19 tests.

A large number of people here are presumed asymptomatic and they are fast spreading the virus because of lack of medical care.

Pakistan has reported over 1,25,000 coronavirus cases and 2,463 casualties. In Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the COVID-19 cases have increased to 534, whereas in Gilgit-Baltistan 1,030 have been  reported.
