Aus cricketers told to watch out on supplement intake in India

March 8, 2013

Aus_cricketersMelbourne, Mar 8: Australian cricketers touring India for the Test series have been warned to be careful about their intake of supplements in the wake of the recent drugs saga mainly affecting rugby clubs.

Michael Clarke's team is midway through a four-match series in India and trailing 0-2 after a demoralising innings defeat in Hyderabad.

Though cricket was not being pinpointed in the Australian Crime Commission report released last month, the touring team management was not taking any chances. The players have been asked to show the touring medico exactly what they are ingesting in India.

"I had a chat to the guys when we started the tour. They've shown me anything that they were taking and it's all absolutely fine," Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said.

"Most of them are not taking anything anyway but a few are taking protein shakes and things like that, which are all pretty straightforward," he was quoted as saying by 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

"There are a small amount of supplements used, vitamins and so on, at various times in every sport. You just have to be careful what's required and what's given."

Dr Brukner, a former head of English Premier League club Liverpool's sports medicine and science unit and an ex-Socceroos doctor, said the intake of supplements by Australian players would continue to be closely supervised on tours and at home despite no suggestion of any banned substance use in the game.

"There has never been a culture of real high-end performance enhancement in cricket, so it's not so much of an issue, but every sport has to address it these days. We've got to be super careful," he said.

"I think it's a wake-up call to all sports. We've got to be very careful and vigilant about what people are using. I think it's been a sign that the role of the doctor has become a bit reduced in some aspects of sport and sports scientists have sort of taken over the performance enhancement side of things and by and large they do an excellent job."

Mumbai, Feb 12: Former Indian greats Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin have been left disappointed by the behaviour of the Under-19 team after the World Cup final where they were involved in an altercation with their Bangladeshi counterparts.

After Bangladesh won the final beating India by three wickets (via DLS) at the Senwes Park on Sunday, the players of the two teams were seen engaging in an exchange of words and even some pushing and shoving on the field.

"I would like to see the board (BCCI) take some strict action against the players to set an example. Cricket is not about abusing the opponent. I am sure there is enough reason for these youngsters to be dealt with firmly by BCCI," Kapil was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

"I welcome aggression, nothing wrong in it. But it has to be controlled aggression. You can't cross the line of decency in the name of being competitive. I would say it was unacceptable that youngsters put up such an obnoxious display on the cricket field," he added.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has sanctioned five players, including three from Bangladesh -- Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain and Rakibul Hasan --and two from India --Akash Singh and Ravi Bishnoi for the scuffle.

Azharuddin also reiterated what Kapil said, insisting that players need to be disciplined.

"I would take action against the errant Under 19 players, but I also want to know what role has the support staff played in educating these youngsters. Act now before it is too late. The players have to be disciplined," Azharuddin said.

Earlier, Bishan Singh Bedi has lashed out at the Priyam Garg-led team, saying their behaviour was disgusting and disgraceful.

"You bat, bowl and field badlyhappens, but there's no excuse for behaving badly. The behaviour was disgusting and most disgraceful. The innocence of that age was not visible at all," Bedi told Mid Day.

Bedi, who represented India in 67 Tests and 10 ODIs, said the behaviour of the Bangladesh cricketers is not our problem.

"Look, what Bangladesh do is their problem, what our boys do is our problem. You could see that there was abusive language used," he said.

"I draw a lot of inspiration from Narendra sir".

Haryana-born Saina Nehwal, 29, is a major acquisition for the party in the middle of the Delhi poll campaign; she is one of the most popular sportspersons in India with a huge fan following and brand value. She is preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

One of her tweets became controversial when it was found to be identical to several others in praise of a PM Modi speech last year. Saina was trolled on Twitter with screenshots of the identical tweets. She was also among the sportswomen who put up identical tweets on Diwali thanking PM Modi for his initiative to empower women, with the hashtag #bharatkilaxmi.
