Dhawan to debut as India look to seal series in third Test

Mohali, Mar 14: When the opposition is in total disarray, it's important to drive home the advantage and deliver the knockout punch. Team India, 2-0 up in the four-match series, will be looking to do just that as they take on Australia in the third Test that gets under way on Thursday.

With the Aussies still busy managing the fallout from 'Home-workGate', the time is right for India to hit hard and seal the series.

The Indian team has been quietly watching the drama unfold in the Australian camp, but it is unlikely that skipper Dhoni and his men will take the opposition lightly, no matter how depleted they might be.

"We have to play good cricket even if it is a weakened Australian side. We can't take them lightly. It's important to maintain the momentum," said Shikhar Dhawan, who will be making his debut.

Dhawan's statement outlined the thought process in the Indian dressing room. In the absence of the discarded Virender Sehwag, Dhawan will be partnering Murali Vijay at the top of the order.

India's two-hour practice session on Wednesday, under the watchful eyes of Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher, was intense. The only other possible change in the playing XI may pertain to the choice of third spinner - will Harbhajan make way for Pragyan Ojha?

In contrast to the Aussie camp, the camaraderie in the Indian camp was in full view. "We are enjoying ourselves. The team is in good spirits and there is a healthy atmosphere in the dressing room. There are a lot of youngsters in our team who gel really well," said Dhawan, who also confirmed that Cheteshwar Pujara, who was struck on his knee while batting in the nets on Tuesday, had been declared fit to play. "Pujara is fit and ready to play," said Dhawan.

The India No. 3 batted in the nets on Wednesday before taking part in a catching practice session, dispelling doubts about his fitness.

The Aussies, on the other hand, have several issues to deal with. They not only have just 13 players to choose from, but also an injured wicket-keeper to worry about.

Matthew Wade, who twisted his ankle while playing basketball here, is still doubtful and skipper Michael Clarke said that the final XI would be decided only before the toss.

With the track at the PCA stadium likely to assist the fast bowlers early on, Clarke would have liked to play three pacers, but with Pattinson and Johnson suspended, he has no option but to field Starc and Siddle.

INDIA EYE RECORD

If they win at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, India will record three straight Test victories in a series against Australia for the first time.

If the hosts win the Test, or even if it ends in a draw, India will accomplish a hat-trick of series wins over Australia in India, having won 2-0 in 2008-09 and 2010-11.

New Delhi, Apr 28: West Indies flamboyant batsman Chris Gayle has lashed out at former teammate Ramnaresh Sarwan calling him 'worse than coronavirus'.

Gayle, the colossal figure in the shortest format of the game blamed Sarwan for his departure from Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Jamaica Tallawahs.

The left-handed batsman joined St Lucia Zouks as their marquee player for the 2020 CPL season after Tallawahs chose not to retain him.

Gayle has played for Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the past. He has won the CPL title twice with the Tallawahs and played in the final with the Patriots in 2017.

"The owner of the franchise is a very nice man, I have no problem with him. I think he was actually persuaded to get rid of Chris Gayle," Gayle said in three parts on his YouTube channel.

"So someone has to be in his years telling him to get rid of Gayle. Sarwan, you are worse than the coronavirus right now. What transpired with the Tallahwahs, you had a big part to play.

Sarwan, you are a snake. You know, you are not the most loved person in the Caribbean. You are still stabbing people in the back," he added.

Gayle is the leading T20 run-scorer of all time as well as the man with the most centuries in the format. He is also the leading CPL run-scorer of all time, having amassed 2,344 runs in the tournament.

London, Apr 12: Former Formula 1 legendary driver Stirling Moss died at the age of 90 on Sunday.

"All at F1 send our heartfelt condolences to Lady Susie and Sir Stirling's family and friends," Formula 1 said in a statement.

Often referred to as the greatest driver never to win the world championship, Moss contested 66 Grands Prix from 1951 to 1961, driving for the likes of Vanwall, Maserati and Mercedes, where he famously formed a contented and ruthlessly effective partnership with lead driver Juan Manuel Fangio.

In his 10-year-long stint at the tracks, Moss took 16 wins, some of which rank among the truly iconic drives in the sport's history - his 1961 victories in Monaco and Germany in particular often held up as all-time classics.

Moss won the 1955 Mille Miglia on public roads for Mercedes at an average speed of close to 100mph, while he also competed in rallies and land-speed attempts.

Following an enforced retirement from racing (barring a brief comeback in saloon cars in the 1980s) after a major crash at Goodwood in 1962, Moss maintained a presence in Formula 1 as both a sports correspondent and an interested observer, before retiring from public life in January of 2018.

Jun 5: The Asian Football Confederation has awarded the hosting rights of the 2022 Women's Asian Cup to India for the first time since 1979.

The decision was taken at the AFC Women's Football Committee meeting. In February, the AFC Women's Football Committee had recommended India to be hosts.

In a letter to the All India Football Federation, Dato Windsor John, General Secretary, AFC wrote: "The Committee awarded the hosting rights of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022 Finals to the All India Football Federation."

The tournament will likely be held in the second half of the year. In the 1979 edition, India had finished as runners-up.

"I need to thank the Asian Football Confederation for finding us suitable to host the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2022," AIFF President, Praful Patel said.

"The tournament will galvanise the aspiring women players and bring in a holistic social revolution as far as women's football in the country is concerned," he added.

The tournament will feature 12 teams, expanded from the previous slot of eight teams.

India qualifies directly as hosts. The event will also serve as the final qualification tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The tournament comes as the latest boost to AIFF as India is slated to host the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup next year.

India had also hosted the AFC U-16 Championships in 2016 and the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017.

"The tournament will play a huge role in further popularising women's football in India. The Women’s Asian Cup 2022 comes on the back of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2020, and will help us sustain, and build on the momentum gained," AIFF General Secretary, Kushal Das said.
