‘RCB is a stepping stone for Kohli’

Bangalore, Mar 27: Royal Challengers Bangalore coach Ray Jennings said that Virat Kohli’s stint as skipper of the Bangalore-based side will be the ‘stepping stone’ for the youngster to take over from Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the captain of the Indian side.

Kohli, who has been touted as Dhoni’s successor for some time now, replaced Daniel Vettori as the skipper for the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League.Virat-Kohli_1

“I said it three years ago, Kohli will captain India but he has to get his captaincy ways right because Dhoni is not going to be around for a long time and he has to be ready. I think the Royal Challengers are a stepping stone for Kohli to take over from Dhoni (as Indian skipper),” said the South African on the sidelines of the team’s practice session at the M?Chinnaswamy stadium on Tuesday.

“He has the captaincy ability, he is a superb human being and he is fiery which is great for the side.”

When asked about how Kohli’s run as skipper at RCB could groom him for the bigger league, Jennings explained: “He is a superb cricketer, probably one of the best at his age in the world. All we got to do is give him the experience and lead him. He is a young guy and I am going to be there to help him.”

Jennings was sure that the decision to elevate Kohli was not detrimental to the team’s progress. “To replace Vettori with Kohli is not a downward move. He is a lovely India guy looking to captain India soon. It is a positive move from his and RCB’s point of view.

He is going to gain experience from guys like AB de Villiers, (Tillakaratne)?Dilshan, (Chris) Gayle and Vettori so there is a lot of support. I hope Virat becomes the player we all want him to become,” concluded the 58-year-old.

Meanwhile, a few RCB players reported for the season’s opening practice session. Under Jennings’ watchful eyes, Pankaj Singh, Vijay Zol, Sheldon Jackson, Abhinav Mukund, Syed Mohammed, Harshal Patel, Arun Karthik, KP Appanna and Jaydev Unadkat went through the drills.

New Delhi, Apr 30: Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday mourned the demise of veteran Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor, called his death 'unreal and unbelievable' loss.

"This is unreal and unbelievable. Yesterday Irrfan Khan and today Rishi Kapoor ji. It's hard to accept this as a legend passes away today. My condolences to the family and may his soul rest in peace," Kohli tweeted.

Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
"It's shocking to hear about the sudden demise of #RishiKapoor ji. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace," Dhawan tweeted.

Earlier today, actor Amitabh Bachchan confirmed the news of the demise of the 67-year-old Rishi Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor was admitted to the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday.

In September 2019, the veteran actor returned to Mumbai after staying in New York for almost a year for cancer treatment.

London, Apr 8: England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has raised more than 65,000 pound (USD 80,000) to help fight the coronavirus by auctioning off his World Cup final shirt.

Buttler's shirt, which he wore when completing the last-ball run-out that saw England beat New Zealand at Lord's last year, was sold to raise money for specialist heart and lung centres provided by the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals in London.

Buttler, who earlier in the showpiece match had hit a fifty and batted in the Super Over, put his long-sleeve keeping jersey up for sale on eBay a week ago.

By the time the auction closed on Tuesday, the shirt had attracted 82 bids with the winner paying 65,100 pound.

Buttler, speaking on Monday, said: "It's a very special shirt but I think it takes on extra meaning with it being able to hopefully go to the emergency cause.

Jeddah, Jan 9: Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde criticised the new Supercopa format and said that "football has become a business and as a business it looks for income".

"The bottom line is football has become a business and as a business it looks for income. That's the reason we are all here," Goal.com quoted Valverde as saying ahead of Barca's semi-final against Atletico.

"It's a completely different format to what we're used to. It was always the first title and the opener of the season and to me, that seemed fine," he added.

The Supercopa was traditionally a two-legged affair played between the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey at the beginning of the season, but following last term's one-off meeting between Barca and Sevilla in Tangier, Morocco, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) went ahead with a full revamp.

Instead of just two teams being involved, the Supercopa has been expanded to also include the runners-up from La Liga and the Copa - meaning Barca and Valencia are joined by Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. It is also set to be hosted in Saudi Arabia for the next three editions.

"It's been changed and let's see, it will be judged once it has happened. It's interesting, with four good teams, but from a sporting point of view, I'm not sure," Valverde said.

"We must bear in mind that the football we are involved in is an industry, sources of income are sought and in the same way that there are special connotations in this country, there are also in Morocco, where we played last year," he added.

Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid in the semifinal of the Supercopa at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on January 10.
