Hyderabad, Apr 8: In a game which went down to the wire, and into the Super Over, the first in the sixth edition of the league, Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by five runs in the T20 league at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal.

In the Super Over, Cameron White and Thisara Perera took 20 runs off Vinay Kumar with White hitting two sixes. In reply, Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli could get only 15 off Dale Steyn to trigger wild celebrations in the arena.

It was another low-scoring game at this ground despite the two captains, Kumar Sangakkara and Virat Kohli, feeling that the wicket was batsman-friendly. It didn't turn out that way as RCB could only get 130/8 after batting first.

Chasing the modest target, the hosts made heavy weather of the task and also finished at 130, losing seven wickets. Under-19 World Cup-winning team member Hanuma Vihari almost took them past the post but could only run one bye when the team needed two off the last ball of the final over, bowled by Vinay Kumar.

Sangakkara's decision to bat lower down at No. 5, seemed to be a masterstroke as he wanted to be around when Muttiah Muralitharan came into bowl. But he could score just 16 before Jaydev Unadkat got him out caught behind to turn the game.

Unadkat also dismissed the hard-hitting Thisara Perera for 8 with a wonderful slower delivery. Vihari, who had earlier dismissed Chris Gayle caught behind for 1 off his first delivery in the tournament, scored a heroic unbeaten 44 in 46 balls.

Kings XI Punjab trounce Pune by 8 wickets

Pune, Apr 8: Pune Warriors found their losing streak too hard to break as they crashed to their 11th consecutive defeat in the franchise-based T20 league, an eight-wicket pummeling by Kings XI Punjab at the Gahunje stadium on Sunday.

Adam Gilchrist's side outplayed the hosts in every department of the game. A disciplined bowling performance backed by sharp fielding helped Preity Zinta's franchise restrict the Warriors to 99-9.That was bad omen.

Gilchrist drove the first ball of the innings from Bhuvneshwar Kumar for four.Another four and a trademark clip off the pads into the square-leg stands amounted to 14 runs from the over.

The contest was over then and there, effectively. But Punjab's best was yet to come. The young combine of Mandeep Singh and Manan Vohra clinically dismantled the Warriors bowling while adding 58 runs from 44 balls for the second wicket.

Mandeep's belligerent 31 and debutant Vohra's unbeaten 43 saw the Mohali franchise romp home with 46 balls to spare.

Nothing went right for Pune, except for the turn of the coin. The hosts had suffered a setback even before the match began with Yuvraj Singh being ruled out with a back injury.

On the pitch, Manish Pandey's poor form continued with a four-ball duck as he played Praveen Kumar in the very first over.

The innings continued to stutter with none of the batsmen anchoring the innings. The only exception was Abhishek Nayar (25 n.o.) who, coming in at No. 7, ran out of able partners.

At least in the previous two seasons, the Warriors began the campaign on a winning note. Not this time. On the other hand, Kings XI couldn't have asked for a better start.

The emphasis on youth meant there was spring in the footsteps generally. Their electrifying fielding, capped by a lunging catch by Gurkeerat Singh Mann to dismiss Ross Taylor at fine-leg, easily helped save at least 20 runs.

The batting, too, promises a lot. If it was Paul Valthaty last season who proved to be the team's find, it could be Mandeep and Vohra this year. The duo, who play for the same state in domestic cricket, plundered five boundaries of an Ashok Dinda over to push the score to 44 for one in four overs.

New Delhi, Jan 2: Thrilled after getting to know about Hardik Pandya and Natasa Stankovic's engagement, skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday called it a "pleasant surprise".

Extending his best wishes to the newly-engaged couple, Kohli posted a comment on Pandya's Instagram post which read, "Congratulations H. What a pleasant surprise. Wish you guys great times ahead. God bless".

On the first day of the New Year 2020, Pandya announced his engagement with Serbian actor Natasa Stankovic.

The cricketer took to Instagram to share the photo with the actor and captioned the post: "Mai tera, Tu meri jaane, saara Hindustan. 01.01.2020 #engaged".

The couple got engaged in Dubai and were seen taking a ferry ride along with close friends.

On the work front, Stankovic was last seen in a song from the Bollywood movie The Body starring Emraan Hashmi and Rishi Kapoor. She had also made it to the finals of the TV show Nach Baliye with her ex-boyfriend Aly Goni.

Stankovic first became a household name after appearing as a contestant on famous reality show Bigg Boss 8.

In 2019, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had confirmed that Pandya had had lower-back surgery in London.

Mumbai, Jan 24: Former Indian cricket captain and former MP Mohammad Azharuddin on Thursday denied allegations of cheating levelled by a travel agency in Maharashtra and threatened to file defamation suit of ₹100 crore.

"Those who filed the FIR have done it only to be in the limelight. There is no truth in it. The allegations are baseless," Azharuddin said in a video message on Twitter.

Azahruddin, who is now president of Hyderabad Cricket Association, said he would soon seek advice from his lawyer and will file Rs 100 crore defamation case against those who lodged the FIR.

A case was filed in Aurangabad on Wednesday against Azharuddin and two others for allegedly cheating a local travel agent of around ₹21 lakh.

The complaint was lodged by Shahab Y. Mohammed, 49, proprietor of Danish Tours & Travels here, a former executive with the defunct Jet Airways.

"We have lodged a first information report against Mujeeb Khan (Aurangabad), Sudheesh Avikkal (Kerala), Mohammed Azharuddin (Hyderabad). No arrests have been made and further investigations are underway," Investigating Officer A.D. Nagre, of the City Chowk police station, told IANS.

According to the complainant, between November 9 and 12, 2019, Avikkal booked several international airline tickets and Azharuddin's personal secretary Mujeeb Khan promised to pay the ticket charges. He said since no payment was made, he was compelled to lodge the police complaint.

Mumbai, Jan 5: All-rounder Irfan Pathan on Saturday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, ending an injury-ridden career that prevented him from realising his true potential.

The 35-year-old's retirement was on expected lines, considering he last played a competitive game in February 2019 during the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy for Jammu and Kashmir.

He did not even put himself in the IPL auction pool, last month.

The left-arm seamer's bowling was like a breath of fresh air when he made his India debut against Australia at the Adelaide Oval in 2003.

He never had express pace but his natural ability to swing the ball into the right-handers got him instant success, also drawing comparisons with the great Kapil Dev.

It seemed India had found the all-rounder they were looking for since Kapil left the scene. Pathan, who last played for India in October 2012, featured in 29 Tests (1105 runs and 100 wickets), 120 ODIs (1544 runs and 173 wickets) and 24 T20 Internationals (172 runs and 28 wickets).

He was part of the victorious Indian team at the 2007 World Twenty20 and was the man-of-the-match in the final against Pakistan.

One of his best performances came on the tour of Pakistan in 2006 when he became the second Indian after Harbhajan Singh to take a Test hat-trick, removing Salman Butt, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yusuf during the Karachi game.

He also played a big role in India winning a Test match against Australia on a tough Perth wicket, which offered steep bounce.

Injuries and lack of form troubled him thereafter and his ability to swing the ball deteriorated.
