Manvinder_BislaKolkata, Apr 27: Those who say Twenty20 is a young man's game should learn a thing or two from Jacques Kallis.

The 37-year-old South African all-rounder, who twisted his knee in the last match against Mumbai Indians and was uncertain for Friday's game, not only recovered in time but also made significant contributions in all aspects of the match to bring Kolkata Knight Riders back to winning ways.

KKR beat Kings XI Punjab by six wickets at the Eden Gardens on Friday evening. The hosts, who had suffered three consecutive defeats before this game, badly needed this win to bring their campaign back on track and Kallis showed how to do that.

He drew first blood for them when he had in-form KXIP opener Mandeep Singh caught by Eoin Morgan at short mid-wicket after Adam Gilchrist won the toss and decided to bat first. Kallis finally emerged as the side's most successful bowler, coming out with magical figures of 2-14 in his four overs.

Chasing 150 for victory, KKR suffered an early jolt when Azhar Mahmood castled skipper Gautam Gambhir and had Yusuf Pathan caught behind off successive deliveries in the second over of the innings.

It was Kallis again who came to the team's rescue. In the company of Manvinder Bisla, who had replaced injured Manoj Tiwary, he steadied the ship as the duo build up a 66-run third-wicket stand in 9.1 overs.

Kallis used all his experience to apply himself on the slow Eden track, mixing cautious with aggression. By the time he was dismissed trying to play one delicately past the wicketkeeper only to be taken by Gilchrist, KKR were well on their way. Kallis fell for a well-made 37 off 33 balls.

The platform was then well utilised by in-form Eoin Morgan and Bisla to take the side home. The duo shared a 72-run third-wicket stand before Morgan fell for a fluent 42 (25b, 3x4, 4x6) just two runs before victory. Bisla remained unbeaten on 50 (43 b, 3x4, 3x6).

Earlier, an out-of-form Gilchrist got a run-a-ball 27 while opening with Mandeep. But it was sad to see Gilchrist, once feared all over the cricketing world for his explosive strokeplay, finding it difficult to time his strokes or even rotate the strike.

He preferred to play second fiddle to Mandeep who led the initial charge for the visitors. Gilchrist tried to accelerate after Mandeep's departure but holed out to Morgan at deep mid-wicket boundary off Rajat Bhatia.

His departure saw Manan Vora breaking loose. The youngster hit Balaji for a huge six but perished to the very next delivery while going for another big one.

New Delhi, Mar 13: The remaining ODI series between India and South Africa has been called-off amidst the rising concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

"The second and third ODI between India and South Africa in Lucknow and Kolkata respectively are called off," the BCCI source told media persons.

The first match of the series was abandoned due to rain and wet outfield without a toss at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium on Thursday.

The second and third ODI was scheduled to be played at Lucknow and Kolkata on March 15 and 18 respectively. Earlier on Thursday, the BCCI has decided to play the remaining two ODIs behind closed doors.

"After holding discussions with the MYAS and MOHFW, the BCCI on Thursday announced that the remaining two One-day Internationals (ODIs) of the three-match series of South Africa tour of India, 2020, will be played without any public gathering, including spectators," the BCCI had said in a statement.

The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has advised all the federations to avoid large gatherings.

World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday had declared the coronavirus outbreak a 'pandemic' and expressed deep concerns.

The coronavirus disease was first detected in Wuhan in China's Hubei province, in late December, and has since spread worldwide.

New Delhi, Jul 28: 'Your character stood out for me than the number of runs you scored," said India skipper Virat Kohli while explaining his decision to give opening Mayank Agarwal a Test debut in the 2018-19 Australia series.

Mayank Agarwal had made his Test debut against Australia in the third Test of the four-match series.

Playing the third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Agarwal managed to register a half-century in his very first innings in the longest format.

"I had seen you play for RCB, even then you played international bowlers with conviction and you would take them on. You were performing in first-class matches in a dominating way. That is something always stood out with you, I would say your character stood out for me than the number of runs. I knew you would be fearless without having any baggage," Kohli told Mayank Agarwal in a video posted on the official website of BCCI.

In the longest format of the game, Agarwal has managed to score 974 runs from 11 matches at an average of 57.29 with three centuries as an opening batsman.

The Indian skipper also explained as to what makes him notice in a player and added that it is important that guys in the team look to face new challenges and emerge triumphantly.

"For me, the biggest marker is how a person approaches the game, so for example when you opened and we made Vihari open with you. The first opportunity we presented Vihari to open the batting, he said yes to it and that matters me to the most," Kohli said.

"I opened in my first series for India, I said yes to this opportunity and things worked out fine for me. So, a guy who wants to get into tough situations will come out either holding his head high or learning from his mistakes," he added.

Kohli and Mayank would soon be seen in action for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab respectively in the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting from September 19 in the UAE.

The comparisons between Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar keep on growing and many have picked the current Indian skipper to break the records set by Tendulkar.

Tendulkar called time on his career after registering 100 international centuries, while Kohli currently has 70 centuries across all formats.

At present, Kohli is ranked at the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings while he is in the second place in Tests rankings. Kohli has so far played 86 Tests, scoring 7,240 runs with 27 centuries at an average of 53.62.

His knock of 254 against South Africa at Pune in 2019 remains his highest Test score to date. When it comes to ODIs, the current Indian skipper has played 248 matches and has 43 centuries.

Mumbai, May 26: Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar said that if he was playing currently he and Virat Kohli would have been the best of friends off the field, but real enemies whenever they stepped on the field.

Akhtar also said that he would have liked to challenge Kohli to drive the ball.

"Virat Kohli and I would have been the best of friends as both of us are Punjabi, but on the field, we would have been the best of the enemies. I would have loved to get inside the head of Kohli. I would have told him that you cannot play a cut or pull shot against me," Akhtar told Sanjay Manjrekar in a videocast hosted by ESPNCricinfo.

"I would have gone wide of the crease and bowled a ball that would go away from him, I would have forced him to drive the ball as it is his favourite shot. So I would keep forcing him to play the drive shot at my pace," he added.

Akhtar also said that he wishes that Kohli could have played against some of the top bowlers in the game.

The Rawalpindi Express said that Kohli would have enjoyed the challenge of facing bowlers like Wasim Akram, Shane Warne, and Waqar Younis.

"I would also keep talking to him, because if I get him to lose his focus then that would have been great. The great thing about Kohli is that he gets more focused when he is challenged. But I believe Virat Kohli would have still scored the same amount of runs if I was playing," Akhtar said.

"I really wish that he had played against Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shane Warne, and then Virat would have also enjoyed the challenge," he added.

Akhtar played 224 matches for Pakistan in international cricket and took 444 wickets across all formats.
