Jaitley on Srinivasan: Wait for a day, you will hear something significant

Jaitley_on_SrinivasanNew Delhi, Jun 1: A day after two of its senior functionaries called it quits, the crisis-hit BCCI's vice-president Arun Jaitley said the next 24 hours could bring about a "significant" development in the unfolding drama.

The under-fire N Srinivasan's adamant stand of sticking on to the post of BCCI president despite the damaging IPL spot-fixing scam Friday night prompted board treasurer Ajay Shirke and secretary Sanjay Jagdale to resign in protest.

"Wait for a day, you will hear something significant," said Jaitley when asked if the five vice-presidents of the board, including him, could put in their papers on Saturday.

The crisis in the BCCI has deepened with every passing day after Srinivasan's son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings team principal Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested for alleged involvement in betting.

Srinivasan, whose company India Cements owns CSK, refused to resign despite repeated calls for his ouster, insisting that he did no wrong.

He has, however, convened an Emergency Working Committee meeting next week hours after information spilled out that the ICC had warned Meiyappan to keep away from bookies at the start of IPL.

Significantly, Jagdale, who is also a member of the three-member inquiry commission to go into allegations against Meiyappan and CSK, also opted out of the inquiry committee.

"I have expressed my inability to join the probe," Jagdale said on Friday when asked whether he would continue in the panel which has two retired judges on it.

There was intense speculation that joint secretary Anurag Thakur will also put in his papers on Saturday to put more pressure on Srinivasan.

The five vice-presidents are Jaitley (North), Niranjan Shah ( West), Sudhir Dabir (Central), Chitrak Mitra (East) and Shivlal Yadav (South).

New Delhi, Aug 5: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Bollywood celebrities have taken it to their social media platforms to express their excitement and shared their thoughts.

Taking to Twitter handle, senior Bollywood actor Anupam Kher extended his best wishes to his legion of followers for the Ram Janmabhoomi Pujan.

While 'Masti' actor Riteish Deshmukh, on the micro-blogging site tweeted multiple hashtag 'Jai Shree Ram' to mark the historic day.

'Queen' actor, Kangana Ranaut's official Twitter handle team wrote: "What could not happen in 500 years happened this year.... this is not picture of the day but the moment of many centuries #JaiShreeRam #RamMandirAyodhya"

Actor Kirron Kher, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, filmmaker Ashok Pandit and others also marked the day and expressed their excitement.

Earlier, evergreen star Hema Malini, through an audio recording congratulated the devotees of Lord Ram on the occasion.

The Mathura MP expressed her excitement on the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the much-awaited Ram Temple.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the special Bhoomi Poojan at Ayodhya ahead of the foundation stone laying ceremony.

He also released a commemorative postage stamp on 'Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir'. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had offered prayers at the Hanuman Garhi Temple in Ayodhya.

Headingley, Jan 25: England have become the first team in the world to score 500,000 runs in Test cricket. They achieved the feat during the ongoing fourth and final Test against South Africa being played at The Wanderers.

On Friday - the opening day of the Test match -- England captain Joe Root's single through the covers took the Three Lions to a landmark 500,000 run-mark in the longest format of the game. They achieved the feat in their 1022nd Test match.

Australia comes second in the list, with 432,706 runs in 830 Tests. India, meanwhile, are third, with 273,518 runs in 540 Tests, followed by West Indies (270,441 runs in 545 Tests).

In the third Test played at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth, England had become the first team to play 500 Test matches on foreign soil. Australia are the second team to play the most away Test with 404 matches they have played so far.

India have played 268 Tests on foreign soil in which they have won 51, lost 113 and 104 have ended in a draw.

Chandigarh, May 25: Legendary former hockey player Balbir Singh Senior died in a private hospital on Monday, his family said.

He was 96 years old. His condition was critical for nearly a fortnight.

He was undergoing treatment at Fortis Mohali and was in a "semi-comatose condition".

He was hospitalised on May 8 with high fever and breathing trouble. His COVID-19 test came negative.

Balbir was part of the Indian teams that won gold at the 1948 London Olympics, Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956. His record for most individual goals scored in an Olympic men's hockey final remains unbeaten.

Balbir had set this record when he scored five goals in India's 6-1 win over Netherlands in the gold medal match of the 1952 Games.

He was the head coach of the Indian team for the 1975 men's World Cup, which India won and the 1971 men's World Cup, where India earned a bronze medal. He was also conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri in 1957.
