Srinivasan steps aside: Win, draw or end of innings?

June 3, 2013

N_SrinivasanChennai, Jun 3: So, N Srinivasan has "stepped aside" as BCCI president, not "stepped down". What does this really mean? How much of his powers have been abridged and for how long? There are two versions on this: One that Srinivasan has merely, so to say, gone on leave and will be back; the other, that once he's out of actually running the board, he's virtually gone for good.

The Jaitley-Shukla camp claims there's hardly any possibility of Srinivasan's return. The probe into the betting-fixing scandal and Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan's alleged role in it is unlikely to take anything less than two months, they say. By that time, it will be close to September and time for the BCCI presidential election, where the chances of Srinivasan being re-elected are slim, according to this camp.

Srinivasan is reported to have suggested that this interim arrangement should be for a month. Jaitley countered by saying it would be for as long as the probe lasted. In other words, there was no agreement on there being a time bar on the probe.

In the meantime, will Srinivasan continue to represent India at the ICC, as he is reported to have demanded? While the Jaitley-Shukla camp says he won't go to the ICC, there must be a formal process to replace Srinivasan at the ICC with someone else. How will that happen? Will the working group headed by Jagmohan Dalmiya be empowered to do so?

Which raises another crucial question - what is Dalmiya's statutory/legal position as working group chief?

In the BCCI constitution, there's no provision for an interim president while the president is still around. Former BCCI president Shashank Manohar is reported to have said that a diarchy would never work.

'No one challenged my decision'

Denying I S Bindra's claims that he "fought tooth and nail" to get the BCCI chief to resign, N Srinivasan told a TV channel that the meeting was "without any acrimony" and that not a single person challenged his decision to step aside and ask Dalmiya to take over. He also said that Ajay Shirke and Sanjay Jagdale would return to the BCCI on Monday.

In the clubby set-up that BCCI is, perhaps the constitution can be ignored if the majority decides on something, but will Dalmiya get to take money decisions ? Will banks recognize his power , for instance, to sign a cheque without a formal communication to this effect from the board?

Indeed, if the claims of the Jaitley-Shukla camp prove to be right, it would appear that Srinivasan has been tricked into believing that he has merely gone for a sabbatical while the truth is that he's been shafted and banished for good. So in the coming days, there is likely to be more acrimony as one "understanding" clashes with the other. While this might turn out to be a clever, clever way of getting Srinivasan out, the Indian cricket fan might still have a final question - this entire exercise was also meant to fix accountability and making people pay for their acts of omission/commission. That won't be the case. After all, Srinivasan is not going out in disgrace.

May 5: Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar says he is interested in becoming India's bowling coach if there is an offer, asserting that he is capable of grooming "more aggressive, fast and talkative" pacers.

Akhtar expressed his willingness in an interview on social networking app 'Helo'.

Asked if he would like to be associated with the Indian bowling unit in future, he responded in the positive. India's current bowling is Bharat Arun.

"I will definitely. My job is to spread knowledge. What I have learned is knowledge and I will spread it," Akhtar said.

One of the fastest bowlers to have played the game, he added, "I will produce more aggressive, fast and more talkative bowlers than the current ones who will tell-off the batsmen in a way that you will enjoy a lot."

He said he has always wanted to share his knowledge among budding cricketers and that he is looking to produce more aggressive bowlers.

He also added that he would like to "coach" IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, for whom he has played in the cash-rich T20 league's inaugural edition.

The former pacer also spoke about his early interactions with Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar in the 1998 series.

"I had seen him but didn't know how big a name he was in India. In Chennai, I got to know that he was known as a god in India.

"Mind you, he is a very good friend of mine. In 1998, when I bowled as fast as I could, Indian public celebrated with me. I have a big fan following in India," Akhtar said.

New Delhi, May 12: Virat Kohli's natural talent makes him a cricketing equivalent of Roger Federer while Steve Smith's mental fortitude matches that of Rafael Nadal, said South African swashbuckler AB de Villiers comparing the two contemporary greats.

In an instagram chat with former Zimbabwe seamer Pommie Mbangwa, de Villiers spoke about the two batsmen, who are easily the game's biggest crowd-pullers right now.

"It's a difficult one, but Virat is definitely the more natural ball-striker, there's no doubt about that," de Villiers said during his interaction on 'Sports Hurricane'.

"In tennis terms, I'd say he's more like a (Roger) Federer whereas Smith is like a (Rafael) Nadal. Smith is mentally very strong and figures out a way of scoring runs - he doesn't look natural, but he ends up writing records and doing amazing things at the crease.

"I think mentally, Smith is one of the best I have ever seen. Virat has also scored runs all over the world and won games under pressure," de Villiers, himself a modern day great, said.

De Villiers also felt that when it comes to chasing, Kohli is a shade ahead of Tendulkar.

"Sachin is a role model for both of us (him and Kohli). The way he stood out in his era, the things he achieved and with the grace he did all that is a great example for everyone," de Villiers said.

"And I think Virat will also say that he set the standards for us to follow.

"But personally, in a chase, I'd say Virat is the best I've seen in my life. Sachin was amazing in all formats and all situations, but Virat comes out on top while chasing."

The world knows Kohli as a prolific cricketer but for de Villiers, he is a friend, who has interests beyond cricket and is spiritual at one level.

"He's much deeper than just a cricket player...I think most people realise after a while that there's more to life than just cricket," de Villiers said.

"...Virat's always been a thinker, he experiments (with) a lot of things, he loves trying new things out - gym wise, what he puts in his mouth. He thinks a lot about life after life - what's to come, the different religions, we talk about everything."

De Villiers said that he also shares a great bond with Indian captain's actor wife Anushka Sharma, conversing on a lot of issues including family life.

"We go pretty deep and his missus as well, Anushka, we have very deep conversations, which is fantastic. We talk about children and family. We're waiting for that first little Kohli to come.

"It's a good friendship and we always find a way to talk about cricket as well, but 90 per cent of the time we talk about other stuff. It's refreshing and in the middle of a very intense IPL tournament," he shared.

IPL, for de Villiers, is not just a tournament but also about friendships that he cherishes.

"Obviously, when it comes to the IPL in India, it's been more than friendship," De Villiers said, when asked who his best friends in cricket are.

"Virat obviously - not only during the IPL, we chat throughout the year, which means it's different than just the IPL or cricketing friendship.
