Plea against Dhoni: Police say photo was work of art

July 27, 2013

DhoniNew Delhi, Jul 27: The Delhi Police today told a court here that the photo of cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni in a magazine posing as God and holding a shoe in his hand "is a work of art" and the player had "no intention" to insult religion.

Police filed their status report in pursuance to the court's order on a complaint seeking registration of an FIR against Dhoni, publisher and editor of a magazine for allegedly insulting Hindu religion and its Gods and Goddesses.

"In this regard, it is submitted that the photograph of Mahendra Singh Dhoni published in the said magazine may not be a deliberate or intentional act of him.

"The photograph of Dhoni published in the magazine is a work of art and animation done by the artist/publisher of the said magazine," the report filed by officials of Nand Nagri Police Station said.

The report was filed before Metropolitan Magistrate Mayuri Singh who fixed the matter for September 9 for hearing arguments on the registration of FIR.

The police also said the magazine has its publication from Film City in Noida which forms the jurisdiction of district Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh in the matter.

"It is also to be mentioned here that no other such complaint apart from this present complaint has been received at Police Station Nand Nagri in this regard," the report said.

The court was hearing a complaint filed by Rajinder Singh Raja, national general secretary of a social organisation Shivsena Hindustan, alleging that in the April 2013 edition of the magazine, Dhoni was portrayed as God Vishnu with a sub- title 'God of Big Deals' and holding products of several firms including a shoe in his hand.

The complaint sought lodging of an FIR for the alleged offences of injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class and uttering words with the deliberate intent to wound religious feelings.

The complainant had said Dhoni's photograph has hurt his as well as the sentiments of thousands of Hindus and it had insulted the Hindu religion and God Vishnu.

"Dhoni has been portrayed as God Vishnu and instead of showing religious things, the magazine is showing several products of various companies including a shoe in his hand. It has insulted the religious sentiments and God," the complaint had alleged.

It had said the act of Dhoni and the magazine is illegal and the cricketer has done this for the sake of money and publicity.

The complainant had said he has approached the court after the police did not take action on his complaint filed against the cricketer and the magazine editor.

The magistrate had earlier issued bailable warrant of Rs 5,000 against a sub inspector for his failure to comply with the court's earlier order directing him to file a status report in the complaint.

Mumbai, Jan 5: All-rounder Irfan Pathan on Saturday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, ending an injury-ridden career that prevented him from realising his true potential.

The 35-year-old's retirement was on expected lines, considering he last played a competitive game in February 2019 during the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy for Jammu and Kashmir.

He did not even put himself in the IPL auction pool, last month.

The left-arm seamer's bowling was like a breath of fresh air when he made his India debut against Australia at the Adelaide Oval in 2003.

He never had express pace but his natural ability to swing the ball into the right-handers got him instant success, also drawing comparisons with the great Kapil Dev.

It seemed India had found the all-rounder they were looking for since Kapil left the scene. Pathan, who last played for India in October 2012, featured in 29 Tests (1105 runs and 100 wickets), 120 ODIs (1544 runs and 173 wickets) and 24 T20 Internationals (172 runs and 28 wickets).

He was part of the victorious Indian team at the 2007 World Twenty20 and was the man-of-the-match in the final against Pakistan.

One of his best performances came on the tour of Pakistan in 2006 when he became the second Indian after Harbhajan Singh to take a Test hat-trick, removing Salman Butt, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yusuf during the Karachi game.

He also played a big role in India winning a Test match against Australia on a tough Perth wicket, which offered steep bounce.

Injuries and lack of form troubled him thereafter and his ability to swing the ball deteriorated.

Milan, Mar 28: Juventus star Paulo Dybala revealed how he "struggled to breathe" after contracting coronavirus which has killed over 9,000 people in Italy.

The Argentine international announced last Saturday he was one of three Juventus players to catch the virus along with Daniele Rugani and Blaise Matuidi, who both had no symptoms.

"I feel better now after some strong symptoms," the 26-year-old Dybala told JTV channel.

"A couple of days ago I was not well, I felt heavy and after five minutes of movement I had to stop because I was struggling to breathe.

"Now I can move and walk to start trying to train, because when I tried in the past few days I started to shake too much.

"I gasped for air and as a result I couldn't do anything, after five minutes I was already very tired, I felt the body heavy and my muscles hurt.

"Now I'm fine. My fiancee Oriana (Sabatini) has also overcome the symptoms."

Dybala has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season, including in league leader's Juventus's last game against Inter Milan before Serie A and all sport in Italy was suspended.

"The goal against Inter was the greatest emotion, (Aaron) Ramsey provided the perfect assist - it's a pity that there was no public," added Dybala.

Jeddah, Jan 9: Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde criticised the new Supercopa format and said that "football has become a business and as a business it looks for income".

"The bottom line is football has become a business and as a business it looks for income. That's the reason we are all here," Goal.com quoted Valverde as saying ahead of Barca's semi-final against Atletico.

"It's a completely different format to what we're used to. It was always the first title and the opener of the season and to me, that seemed fine," he added.

The Supercopa was traditionally a two-legged affair played between the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey at the beginning of the season, but following last term's one-off meeting between Barca and Sevilla in Tangier, Morocco, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) went ahead with a full revamp.

Instead of just two teams being involved, the Supercopa has been expanded to also include the runners-up from La Liga and the Copa - meaning Barca and Valencia are joined by Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. It is also set to be hosted in Saudi Arabia for the next three editions.

"It's been changed and let's see, it will be judged once it has happened. It's interesting, with four good teams, but from a sporting point of view, I'm not sure," Valverde said.

"We must bear in mind that the football we are involved in is an industry, sources of income are sought and in the same way that there are special connotations in this country, there are also in Morocco, where we played last year," he added.

Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid in the semifinal of the Supercopa at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on January 10.
