'Ganguly showed lack of respect by turning up late for toss'

Bangalore, Aug 3: Former captain Sourav Ganguly may have showed a "lack of respect" by turning up late for toss when India locked horns with Australia during the historic 2001 Test series, feels Steve Waugh who was a leading a bunch of extraordinarily talented Aussies in that rubber.

"The fact that he turned up late every game -- it was his choice. I just thought it showed a lack of respect for the game. It didn't really affect me. The match referee actually told him that he had to turn up on time," Waugh said when asked about the controversial episode.

Waugh, meanwhile, is hopeful of Australia scripting a turnaround in the remaining three Tests against England in the ongoing Ashes series, which the hosts lead 2-0.

"Australia have begun well the third Test at Old Trafford. Hope we can make a comeback in the remaining three Tests," said Waugh.

Australia ended the first day's play of the third Test at a commanding 303 for three yesterday at Old Trafford.

"The current Australian side is inexperienced, while England are experienced lot. We nearly won the first Test at Trent Bridge. So we need to just hang in there and have faith in our abilities," Waugh insisted.

"The young Australian players are immensely talented. We have a lot of talent, especially in bowling department," he added.

Waugh also felt that the Australian selectors should give an extended run to the youngsters so that they can prove their mettle.

"Constant chopping and changing deters players' confidence. The good thing that the selectors can do is to stick a team which they believe in. The players can use the opportunity to prove their abilities," he said.

Commenting on Test cricket, Waugh said the format really tests a player's calibre in mental, physical and emotional terms.

"You can't find such testing situations in Twenty20 cricket," he said.

The former Aussie great advised the youngsters to concentrate more on Test cricket than Twenty20.

"Try and play for your country in Test cricket first; all the other things will fall in place afterwards," he said.

Waugh also claimed that he discovered backhand slower ball during 1987 World Cup final against England.

"I was the first to discover backhand slower bowl. My advise to kids is that when you are practising in the nets, you should concentrate on adding variety to your bowling."

New Delhi, Aug 6: The BCCI on Thursday suspended the IPL title sponsorship deal with Chinese mobile phone company Vivo for the event's upcoming edition amid heightened tensions in Sino-India diplomatic ties.

The BCCI sent out a one-line statement, without giving details, saying that Vivo would not be associated with the IPL this year. "The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and vivo Mobile India Pvt Ltd have decided to suspend their partnership for Indian Premier League in 2020," the statement said.

Meanwhile, Vivo released its own statement saying that the two entities "have mutually decided to pause their partnership for the 2020 season".

Vivo won the IPL title sponsorship rights for five years from 2018 to 2022 for a reported sum of Rs 2,190 crore, approximately Rs 440 crore per annum.

The two parties are now working out a plan in which Vivo might come back for a fresh three-year period starting 2021 on revised terms.

However, a top BCCI official offered a different view. "Here we are talking about diplomatic tensions and you expect that after November, when IPL ends and before the next IPL starts in April 2021, there would be no anti-China sentiment? Are we serious?" a veteran BCCI official said on conditions of anonymity.

The anti-China sentiment in the country peaked after the violent face-off between the Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh. India lost 20 soldiers in the clash, while China also acknowledged unspecified casualties.

The stand-off at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) caused outrage across India with several calls for boycotts of Chinese companies and products.

The BCCI is now likely to float a tender for new IPL title sponsors as mandated by its constitution. The glitzy T20 league starts on Sept. 19 in the UAE, forced out of India due to the rising COVID-19 cases.

The new development is in stark contrast to what came out of Sunday's IPL's Governing Council meeting, where it was decided that Vivo, along with all the other sponsors, will remain on board.

This was after the BCCI had announced in June that all sponsorship deals pertaining to IPL will be reviewed in the aftermath of the clash in the Galwan Valley.

However, after Sunday's meeting, there was a huge backlash on social media about the BCCI holding on to Vivo.

Both parties then began thrashing out an amicable separation plan, at least for this season.

However, the end of this deal could spell losses for the franchises as they get a substantial share from the sponsorship pool. Half of the annual Vivo sponsorship money is distributed equally among eight franchises, which comes to Rs 27.5 crore.

"As of now, it will be very difficult for the BCCI to match the sponsorship amount at such short notice. Therefore, both BCCI and the franchises should be prepared to lose out on some money -- BCCI more but each franchise from Vivo's exit will potentially lose 15 crore," the official said.

"This year will be difficult for everyone but the show must go on," the official said.

Zurich, Apr 19: Former Indian captain Bhaichung Bhutia was among the 50 footballers to take part in the FIFA's initiative to pay tribute to 'humanity's heroes' amid the coronavirus pandemic.

FIFA, in its statement, expressed gratitude towards all the healthcare workers and other professionals who are giving their all to ensure society continues to function in the face of the coronavirus.

"To all of these heroic people: football thanks you, football remembers you and football supports you," FIFA said in a statement.

FIFA shared a video on their official Twitter handle where footballers from present and past came been seen applauding the frontline workers.

New Delhi, Mar 31: Australia batsman David Warner on Tuesday decided to shave off his head to show support towards all those people who are working relentlessly on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.

After shaving off his head, Warner also challenged his Australian team-mate Steve Smith and India skipper Virat Kohli to do the same.

Warner, shared a time-lapse video on Instagram, of him shaving his head, and captioned the post as: "Been nominated to shave my head in support of those working on the frontline #Covid-19 here is a time-lapse. I think my debut was the last time I recall I've done this. Like it or not".

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Australia's death toll stands at 19, as per the Sydney Morning Herald.

As of 8 am today, 4460 people across Australia have tested positive for COVID-19.

The World Health Organisation had termed coronavirus as a 'pandemic' on March 11.

Earlier in the day, Australia Test skipper Tim Paine also confirmed that the side's tour of Bangladesh is unlikely due to the virus spread.
"You don't have to be Einstein to realise (the Bangladesh tour) is probably unlikely to go ahead, particularly in June. Whether it's cancelled or pushed back, we're not quite sure at the moment," cricket.com.au quoted Paine as saying.

Currently, Australia has 296 points in the WTC from 10 matches, while India has 360 points from nine matches.
