August 14, 2013

Sodhi_SindhuNew Delhi, Aug 14: Trap-shooter and former World No 1 Ronjan Sodhi was recommended for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award on Tuesday.

Sodhi, a two-time World Champion on the trot, became the seventh shooter and third consecutive one to be awarded the Khel Ratna. Before him, Abhinav Bindra (2001-02), Anjali Bhagwat (2002-03), Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004-05), Manavjit Singh Sandhu (2006-07), Gagan Narang (2010-11) and Vijay Kumar (2011-12) have received the award.

Sodhi, in his third attempt for the award, edged out Jeev Milkha Singh (golf), Somdev Devvarman (tennis), Sardar Singh (hockey), Sandeep Singh (hockey), Krishna Poonia (athletics), power-lifter Bhupinder Singh and para-athlete high-jumper H N Girisha.

“It has been a long-awaited one. I feel after my performance, especially in 2010 — when I won medals in World Championships, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games — I should have got it. I carried forward my good form in 2011 and was the World No 1. But then as long as it is in your kitty, it does not matter. At least now when I retire, I can look back with peace," Sodhi said. “Shooting has done consistently well in the last 8-10 years. The government has played a big role by pumping in a lot of money. The award has greatly motivated me to do better and work hard for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games next year,” he added.

Among the 15 Arjuna awardees was the name of 18-year-old P V Sindhu. The ever-smiling lanky Hyderabadi shuttler made history at the World Championship at Guangzhou when she became the first Indian woman in singles to win a medal. “I am very happy that my name has been recommended for the Arjuna Award. I feel honoured. I just won a bronze medal in World Championship, and now to know about an Arjuna Award, it is a very nice feeling,” she said.

India vice-captain Virat Kohli, who has had a stellar run with the bat and also leading the side, is the only cricketer to be given the award, while rapidly improving golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar’s name is also among those recommended for the Arjuna. Kavita Chahal, with seven national titles and two medals in the World Championships, is among the most successful women boxers in the country and is the only pugilist to get the award. The names will be sent to the sports minister for final clearance.

Mumbai, May 21: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has chosen legendary Sachin Tendulkar over current skipper Virat Kohli as a better batsman in the ODI format, considering the changed rules of the game and the Mumbaikar's longevity of career.

Tendulkar, who retired in 2013, played 463 ODIs and amassed 18, 426 runs with 49 hundreds at an average of 44.83.

Kohli, on the other hand, has played 248 ODIs and scored 11, 867 runs with 43 tons at an average of 59.33.

"Sachin Tendulkar, because probably with one white ball and four fielders inside the circle, not five fielders outside, it will be Sachin Tendulkar for me," Gambhir said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'.

Nowadays, a one-day innings is played with two white balls and with three powerplays.

In the first power play (overs 1-10), two fielders are allowed beyond the 30-yard circle, while in the second powerplay (overs 10-40) four fielders are allowed. In the last powerplay (overs 40-50), five fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

Gambhir, who was the star performer in 2011 ODI World Cup final which India won, feels that the change in rules has helped batsmen.

"It's difficult because Virat Kohli has done phenomenally well but I think the rules have changed as well, which has helped a lot of new batters," elaborated Gambhir, who played 58 Tests and 147 ODIs.

"The new generation, with 2 new balls, no reverse swing, nothing for the finger spin, five fielders inside for the 50 overs, probably that makes batting much easier.

He said he would also go with Tendulkar, considering his longevity and flow of the ODI cricket format at that time.

"Probably I’ll go with Sachin Tendulkar if we see the longevity and flow of the one-day cricket format.

"Look at how Sachin Tendulkar has played, different rules, that time 230 to 240, was a winning total," Gambhir signed off.

Chennai, Jan 26: Former India cricketer Kapil Dev on Saturday said that it will be a big loss for the Indian side when MS Dhoni decides to hang up his boots.

"I think he has served the country so well and nobody has done it like him. Everyone has to retire sooner or later. He is not playing matches currently. So I don't know when he will come out one day and say -- I have had enough. I think it will be our loss because he is such a fabulous cricketer," Dev told reporters here.

In the recently released BCCI contracts list, Dhoni did not find a place for himself. The former World Cup winning captain Dev said that it is unfortunate that Dhoni was not included in the contract list.

"I feel sorry that they have not included him.

Tendulkar, Gavaskar had to witness the same. It's not my job and I am not there to give the contract to anyone. It is the job of the cricket board. So, I don't know. You can ask this question to the cricket board. They will be able to answer this question," Dev said.

The 38-year-old Dhoni is currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the tournament.

Especially in the games against England and New Zealand (semi-final), he had to bear the brunt of netizens, who deemed him as the reason for the Men in Blue's loss.

BCCI released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.
