Hey BCCI, why pressurise youngsters for Sachin's 200th Test?

September 7, 2013

Sachins_200New Delhi, Sep 7: BCCI's move to facilitate Sachin Tendulkar's 200th Test milestone on home soil is likely to have serious repercussions on the Indian team's curtailed South Africa tour.

After a timid encounter against Zimbabwe during the months of July and August, a fresh and rejuvenated Indian side was supposed to take on the World No.1 Proteas in November in their backyard with aplomb, sans any fatigue.

India were supposed to tour South Africa for three Tests, seven ODIs and two T20 matches between November 18 and January 25. However, with the BCCI adamant on holding a West Indies series - two Tests and three ODIs - before the South Africa tour, an exhausted Indian side may find it difficult to face Proteas on their soil where the visitors already have a dismal record.

India have won just two Tests in South Africa and their ODI win-loss ratio, too, is far from impressive. With fresh pool of talents like Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay leaving a mark in previous home series and Champions Trophy, expectations were high from this current batch of youngsters.

But it seems the Indian board is hell bent on adding psychological pressures of an unwanted home series against the Caribbean side onto the youngsters, only to facilitate a fading star by helping him reach another milestone.

The board's adamant stand appears more foolish when Tendulkar himself has asserted that 200th Test is just a number and he has no intentions of quitting the game even after reaching the magical number. "Where is the rush? I don't think at this stage I need to do that," said Tendulkar when asked about his retirement plan.

Tendulkar had a chance to quit on a high note had he been allowed to reach the 200th Test during a challenging South Africa tour, rather than against a weak West Indies side in the sub-continent. A Tendulkar special against a ferocious attack consisting of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel would have been a delight for all his fans.

Tendulkar had reached his 50th Test ton during the South Africa tour in 2010. Though, India lost the match, the famous hundred at Centurion was a face saver for the visitors after the first innings collapse.

Tendulkar's fans are looking for another such knock from him. And if he guides the young team to a Test series win in South Africa, it would have been another prominent feather to his cap, rather than completing a double ton of Test matches on home soil.

Mumbai, Jan 24: Former Indian cricket captain and former MP Mohammad Azharuddin on Thursday denied allegations of cheating levelled by a travel agency in Maharashtra and threatened to file defamation suit of ₹100 crore.

"Those who filed the FIR have done it only to be in the limelight. There is no truth in it. The allegations are baseless," Azharuddin said in a video message on Twitter.

Azahruddin, who is now president of Hyderabad Cricket Association, said he would soon seek advice from his lawyer and will file Rs 100 crore defamation case against those who lodged the FIR.

A case was filed in Aurangabad on Wednesday against Azharuddin and two others for allegedly cheating a local travel agent of around ₹21 lakh.

The complaint was lodged by Shahab Y. Mohammed, 49, proprietor of Danish Tours & Travels here, a former executive with the defunct Jet Airways.

"We have lodged a first information report against Mujeeb Khan (Aurangabad), Sudheesh Avikkal (Kerala), Mohammed Azharuddin (Hyderabad). No arrests have been made and further investigations are underway," Investigating Officer A.D. Nagre, of the City Chowk police station, told IANS.

According to the complainant, between November 9 and 12, 2019, Avikkal booked several international airline tickets and Azharuddin's personal secretary Mujeeb Khan promised to pay the ticket charges. He said since no payment was made, he was compelled to lodge the police complaint.

Colombo, Aug 1: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has expressed his interest in playing the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), scheduled to start from August 28.

Pathan is among 70 foreign players to have shown interest in playing the LPL, ESPNcricinfo reported.

It is believed that Pathan has taken permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take part in the competition.

BCCI doesn't allow active players to participate in other T20 leagues but Pathan announced his retirement in January this year.

Former swashbuckling all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also played in a foreign league last year. He played for Maratha Arabians in the T10 League in Abu Dhabi.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Pathan will now be put in a player draft unless one of the five franchises choose him to be a marquee player. The details of the draft, and the franchise owners, are yet to be finalised and announced.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is also waiting on some government clearances even as it decides on franchise owners. The five franchises will represent Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna.

On Monday, SLC Executive Committee granted approval for the tournament.

"The 23 match League will be played on the four international venues of R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium. Five teams named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will participate in the League," SLC said in a statement on Monday.

Sri Lanka has controlled the spread of COVID-19 better than many other cricket-playing nations.

New Delhi, Jan 16: Mahendra Singh Dhoni was on Thursday dropped from the BCCI's list of centrally contracted players, raising fresh doubts on the future of the former India captain who has not played since the World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand last year.

The BCCI announced the central contracts for the period of October 2019 to September 2020. Dhoni was in the A category, which fetches a player Rs 5 crore, until last year.

Skipper Virat Kohli, his deputy Rohit Sharma and top pacer Jasprit Bumrah were retained in the highest A+ bracket of Rs 7 crore.
