When Prashant Vaidya gave 'sleepless night' to Sachin Tendulkar

October 26, 2013

Sachin_Tendulkar_copyNagpur, Oct 26: Sachin Tendulkar may have given sleepless nights to many bowlers over the years but not many bowlers have robbed him off his sleep. Former India pacer Prashant Vaidya, however, is one of those who kept the little master up all night on one occasion.

India was playing a triangular in Singapore just after the 1996 World Cup and the pacer from Nagpur was part of the squad.

"It was for the first time that the BCCI had given the players separate rooms. Sachin, probably was feeling a bit uncomfortable sleeping alone and he asked me to join him. Next day, we were playing Pakistan and as I wasn't in the playing XI I stayed with him. Next morning I asked him whether he had slept well and he answered in negative. I asked him 'Kay Jhala' (What happened?). He said that I was snoring non-stop. It left me terrified and embarrassed as we were playing our arch-rivals Pakistan and I had deprived India's star batsman of a good night's sleep. To my luck, Sachin scored a hundred in the game and I was the most relieved man," Vaidya said.

The pacer who owed Sachin a dinner narrates another interesting anecdote. "I along with Sanjay Manjrekar and Sachin went out for dinner. We saw Aquib Javed, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and other Pakistani players. When we passed them, Sachin greeted them. Aquib grabbed his hand, looked in his eyes and said 'you make us toil all day on the field...at least now you can afford to smile. Sachin smiled at them from ear-to-ear. Such was the fear and respect he commanded that is brought relief to the bowlers," Vaidya recalled.

The 46-year-old quips that he had a 'peace-pact' with Sachin whenever the two met on the playing field. "We had this 'peace-pact' in place whenever I bowled at him in domestic cricket. Once in a Challenger Trophy game he was clobbering all the other bowlers but I somehow managed to fare better than others. Perhaps I was bowling well to him or he took me too seriously. When I stood at the top of my run-up, I jokingly waved a peace sign towards him. That brought a smile on his face and we got on with the game. Jokes apart, bowling to him was always a challenge. I played against him twice and picked his wicket on both occasions," Vaidya said.

Vaidya recalled how Tendulkar calmed his nerves on his international debut. "He was fielding in the slips. As I was marking my run-up, he spoke to captain Azharuddin and came down at mid-off, just to calm me down. He eased my pressure. That's his greatness. He is always there for newcomers. I saw many first of Sachin and his first one-day hundred was one of them. I still remember the shot that brought up his hundred with. Who would have imagined he would score close to 50 ODI hundreds," he said.

Mumbai, Feb 12: Former Indian greats Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin have been left disappointed by the behaviour of the Under-19 team after the World Cup final where they were involved in an altercation with their Bangladeshi counterparts.

After Bangladesh won the final beating India by three wickets (via DLS) at the Senwes Park on Sunday, the players of the two teams were seen engaging in an exchange of words and even some pushing and shoving on the field.

"I would like to see the board (BCCI) take some strict action against the players to set an example. Cricket is not about abusing the opponent. I am sure there is enough reason for these youngsters to be dealt with firmly by BCCI," Kapil was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

"I welcome aggression, nothing wrong in it. But it has to be controlled aggression. You can't cross the line of decency in the name of being competitive. I would say it was unacceptable that youngsters put up such an obnoxious display on the cricket field," he added.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has sanctioned five players, including three from Bangladesh -- Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain and Rakibul Hasan --and two from India --Akash Singh and Ravi Bishnoi for the scuffle.

Azharuddin also reiterated what Kapil said, insisting that players need to be disciplined.

"I would take action against the errant Under 19 players, but I also want to know what role has the support staff played in educating these youngsters. Act now before it is too late. The players have to be disciplined," Azharuddin said.

Earlier, Bishan Singh Bedi has lashed out at the Priyam Garg-led team, saying their behaviour was disgusting and disgraceful.

"You bat, bowl and field badlyhappens, but there's no excuse for behaving badly. The behaviour was disgusting and most disgraceful. The innocence of that age was not visible at all," Bedi told Mid Day.

Bedi, who represented India in 67 Tests and 10 ODIs, said the behaviour of the Bangladesh cricketers is not our problem.

"Look, what Bangladesh do is their problem, what our boys do is our problem. You could see that there was abusive language used," he said.

New Delhi, Jul 28: 'Your character stood out for me than the number of runs you scored," said India skipper Virat Kohli while explaining his decision to give opening Mayank Agarwal a Test debut in the 2018-19 Australia series.

Mayank Agarwal had made his Test debut against Australia in the third Test of the four-match series.

Playing the third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Agarwal managed to register a half-century in his very first innings in the longest format.

"I had seen you play for RCB, even then you played international bowlers with conviction and you would take them on. You were performing in first-class matches in a dominating way. That is something always stood out with you, I would say your character stood out for me than the number of runs. I knew you would be fearless without having any baggage," Kohli told Mayank Agarwal in a video posted on the official website of BCCI.

In the longest format of the game, Agarwal has managed to score 974 runs from 11 matches at an average of 57.29 with three centuries as an opening batsman.

The Indian skipper also explained as to what makes him notice in a player and added that it is important that guys in the team look to face new challenges and emerge triumphantly.

"For me, the biggest marker is how a person approaches the game, so for example when you opened and we made Vihari open with you. The first opportunity we presented Vihari to open the batting, he said yes to it and that matters me to the most," Kohli said.

"I opened in my first series for India, I said yes to this opportunity and things worked out fine for me. So, a guy who wants to get into tough situations will come out either holding his head high or learning from his mistakes," he added.

Kohli and Mayank would soon be seen in action for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab respectively in the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting from September 19 in the UAE.

The comparisons between Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar keep on growing and many have picked the current Indian skipper to break the records set by Tendulkar.

Tendulkar called time on his career after registering 100 international centuries, while Kohli currently has 70 centuries across all formats.

At present, Kohli is ranked at the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings while he is in the second place in Tests rankings. Kohli has so far played 86 Tests, scoring 7,240 runs with 27 centuries at an average of 53.62.

His knock of 254 against South Africa at Pune in 2019 remains his highest Test score to date. When it comes to ODIs, the current Indian skipper has played 248 matches and has 43 centuries.
